1 Cl verdale Chr nicle W I N T E Message from the President By Cherie Langlois-Klassen Happy New Year Everyone! Where has 2014 gone so quickly? First off, I would like to wish all of my neighbours, on behalf of the League, a happy and healthy 2015! In case you missed the 2014 AGM that was held on October 29, 2014, this past year has been very busy and eventful in Cloverdale. We also had some Executive turn-over at the AGM, as Fabian Perez-Parada completed his term as Treasurer, and eka Serfozo completed hers as Communications Director. I want to take a moment to thank them again for their outstanding efforts and countless volunteer hours that they have put in for our community. Luckily, we are appreciative to have Shandra Nielson to step up to serve as this term s Communication Director, and for Sandy Fleming agree to serve as our new Treasurer. Welcome to you both! The major news coming out of the recent AGM that the community should be aware of is as follows: The recent creation of a Flood Mitigation/Sewage Upgrade Committee. The purpose of the committee is to address the need for the City of Edmonton to commit funds in the City budget to upgrade sewer systems in Cloverdale rather than to deal with specific issues affecting certain structures or areas in the neighbourhood. If you would like to become involved with this issue, please contact Murray Schneider at meschneider@shaw.ca. The League s major expense this year will be the repair of the rink shack roof. The membership discussed the merits of patching versus a major repair of the roof at the AGM and approved the more permanent solution as the roof is spongy in several places and the insulation is wet. The cost is anticipated to come in around $25,000. A discussion took place around the use of the rink by hockey and shinny players who live outside of the community and use the rink free of charge. The concern was that this use may deter community members from using the rink during family and recreational skating times due to safety concerns. This issue was referred to the Executive for further consideration. I am pleased to report that the Executive will be undertaking a new initiative to address this last concern. Starting this month, we are asking League Member families (or individuals) to commit to volunteering to host a week of family skating. The week s family skating times are Mondays 7 9 pm; Wednesdays 7 9pm; and Sundays 1 4pm. During family skate times, no sticks are allowed on the ice even if there are no other skaters, to encourage all skaters to come out and participate. Host families/individuals would be responsible for attending the rink during all of these designated hours for their week, and ensuring that hot chocolate and cookies (provided by the League) were available for skaters. In appreciation of their volunteer commitment, the League will provide the host volunteers with a $50 gift certificate after their service. If you are interested in signing up for this program, please contact me at cherie_klassen@hotmail.com. Please stay tuned for information on upcoming Community League events this year promises to be another busy year with lots of opportunities to get involved in our community and to get to know your neighbours here. Please remember, we are the community that we build. Everyone s contributions help build a better Cloverdale. If you are able to volunteer to assist with an upcoming event, please contact our Social Director, Bob Zukerman, at daszuke@gmail.com. Finally, thanks to all that volunteered at the casino over the holidays. We appreciate you! Take care and I m looking forward to getting to know you better in 2015! Send your submissions to cloverdalechronicle@gmail.com by March 30th, Host a Week of Family Skate We are looking for League Member families (or individuals) to commit to volunteering to host a week of family skating. As thanks, the League will provide the host volunteers with a $50 gift certificate (one per household/week) after their service. If you are interested in signing up for this program, please contact me (Cherie Klassen) at cherie_klassen@hotmail.com to coordinate your week and supply information. Volunteers Needed for Cloverdale Events Would you like to get more involved with community events? We are looking for volunteers to help with the planning and coordinating of family events like the recent Family Christmas Party and adult events like Winter Wine Not. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Bob Zukerman, at daszuke@gmail.com. Seeking Welcome Wagon Volunteers Welcome Wagon we ve all heard about it. Is it something we could do as a community to welcome people moving into Cloverdale? Our Community League executive has put out the suggestion, and I think it is a great idea. It would be nice for new residents as they get settled in, and also nice for us to meet our new neighbours. Having no experience with Welcome Wagon myself, either on the giving or receiving end, I really need to have some of you join me in organizing this. For example, there is an existing Welcome Wagon Canada organization (see their website). Should we go through that, use their information as a guideline, or build our own program specific to Cloverdale? How will we contact new residents? Should we provide information only, or should we give items solicited from local businesses? Could we offer walking tours of the community and river valley trails easily accessible from Cloverdale? Should the info be about Cloverdale only, or should we include info about Edmonton generally? If you moved here recently, what would you have liked to know about? How can we include new residents moving into The Landing? As you can see, I have lots of questions! Please contact me (Val Blanch) at or morleyandval@shaw.ca, and let s see if we can get this going. Once I have expressions of interest from at least three or four people, we can have a brainstorming meeting and go from there.

5 Cloverdale Community Garden Update The Cloverdale Community Garden club had its Annual General Meeting on October 27, The members thanked Karen McFarlane for her many hours of dedication as chair of the committee. She chose to not continue in this position for the next term. Marge McKay has volunteered to chair the committee for the 2014/15 season. eg Kontz was successful in completing all the applications and work required to obtain approval for the grant application for funding from Sustainable Food Edmonton. This seed money will provide the necessary start-up funding for the garden initiative to proceed in the spring of The spring meeting is tentatively scheduled for March 9, at 7 pm. at the Cloverdale Hall. In regards to the allocation of garden plots; for the 2015 season, the terms of reference indicated that of the 20 possible plots available, we would allocate them to the present and past board members and the remaining plots would be available for a lottery draw from the names of Cloverdale Community League members who expressed interest and provided their contact information. If you are interested in further information contact one of the committee members: Marge: m.m.mackay@telus.net eg: marmich@telusplanet.net Susan: Yackulic@telus.net Kevin: kmroberg@ualberta.ca Margaret: margmcvea@gmail.com Peter: kpmcfarlane@shaw.ca LT Update By Paul Bunner Co-chair, Cloverdale LT Committee There have been a number of important developments related to the Southeast LT project. They include the October release of the heavily redacted public version of the equest for Proposals (FP) that was issued to the three m ultinational global engineering and construction consortia that are bidding on the project. As directed by City Council, concerned stakeholders and citizens were invited to submit questions in response to the public version of the FP. Cloverdale s questions, which are posted on the CCL website, seek the release of more detail from the FP related to our community s long-standing concerns about some of the design elements and construction scheduling in the river valley. City Administration has until January 7, to respond to FP questions. The successful bidder is expected to be chosen in late 2015, with construction to commence in January There is some speculation that the fall of oil prices and government revenues may impact the schedule. Visit the Cloverdale Community League website for more information about the LT project. Upcoming Cloverdale Events: Keep an eye on the Events page of the CCL website for upcoming details about the adult winter social event, Winter Wipe Out, scheduled for March 14,2015. Bring an appetizer, wine and beer $2.
