5 Organisational Development and Learning Learning and Development Programme Training for Managers and Support Services is also available through the Corporate Transformation Learning and Development Section. Full details of available courses can be found on the HR Website: The link to the internet site is: If staff previously in Social Care wish, Workforce development to fund their attendance on a course, applications forms should be completed and returned to Workforce development for approval. They will then forward them to the Learning and Development Admin Team. CHARGING FOR COURSES For certain courses, a charge will be made for delegates from the Independent, Voluntary and Private Sector. Where this applies it is clearly indicated in the booklet. The charge will be made for all confirmed places on the relevant course unless written notice is received at least 48 hours before the course that the place is cancelled. CHARGING FOR SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN COURSES At the Stockport Safeguarding Children Board meeting on 24 January 2011, it was agreed to introduce charging for places on multi-agency training. This is a pilot scheme to come into effect from 1 April The charging policy to be introduced is as follows: All organisations will be charged 80 per day (pro rata) for those delegates who do not attend. This includes organisations that make a financial contribution to the board as well as those that don t. It also includes small voluntary organisations. The charge will be waived if the place is cancelled in writing by the manager 5 working days before the course date. An will be acceptable. Cancellations on the day will incur a charge. Therefore, if a delegate is unable to attend at short notice then the manager may nominate an appropriate substitute to attend. The substitute should indicate on the register who they are replacing. The Board also agreed that a charge will be introduced for all organisations that do not make a financial contribution to the SSCB. The cost will be 80 per person per place. Small voluntary organisations will not be charged for attending training.

6 Course Booking Procedures Please complete a separate nomination form for each course and if you are nominating named members of staff we require a separate form for each nomination. Numbers of staff rather than named individuals may be nominated. For Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council Staff, it is now possible to book a number of training events via the ITrent self-service system. Please check to see if the training you are interested in is available by this method.. Prioritising Staff Training. In order to help us if courses are over-subscribed, if you are nominating a number of staff for a particular course, please indicate on the nomination form the order of priority (1 = high 4 = low) you wish to apply to offering them places Nomination forms must be signed by a manager before they are sent to Workforce Development otherwise they will not be accepted. 7 ALLEGATIONS MANAGEMENT: BRIEFINGS FOR MANAGERS The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) provides information on the allegations management process that must be followed when a complaint about a worker is received and the role and responsibilities for managers in the Children s Workforce. Who is the course for? 8 ASTHMA AWARENESS Who is the course for? This course is open to anyone working with Children and Young People Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of the 5.4 million people in the UK whose lives are affected by asthma. We offer free awareness training covering: Asthma facts What asthma is Signs and symptoms Triggers Treatment Recognising an asthma attack What to do Asthma UK information and Helpline The interactive sessions allow delegates to explore using inhalers and other asthma related equipment. 9 BASIC CHILD PROTECTION AWARENESS This course is for This course is open to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council Staff, Health Staff, Police, Education Staff and the Independent, Voluntary and Private Sector, staff working in Mental Health, Substance Misuse, Learning Disability Services who require basic training in safeguarding children. Please note that staff must have either completed this, an equivalent course provided by their organisation/sector/or the relevant e-learning before they can attend any SSCB multi-agency courses. Aim This course provides essential basic training in safeguarding children. This level of training is mandatory for all staff having contact with Children and families (Children Act 2004).The half-day course is an introduction to child protection and covers legal background, recognition and response and how safeguarding is integral to the common processes approach in Stockport. 10 BRAIN DEVELOPMENT: NEUROSCIENCE AND ATTACHMENT This course is for Stockport Family First, Foster Carers, Short Break Foster carers, FOS, Supported Lodgings and Leaving Care Service NOTE: This course is the second of a trio of courses and we would advise it is done after completion of Introduction to Attachment and Child Development. Aim To understand the importance of pre-birth and early years experiences on brain development and the impact of trauma on a child s emotional development. Objectives At the end of the course participants will be able to: Have an understanding of healthy brain development based on recent research. Have an understanding of factors that can negatively affect brain development both pre and post birth. Understand the link between attachments and brain development both in the short and long term, including developmental trauma. Have an understanding of the role of the executive functioning part of the brain and how this can be affected by pre and post birth experiences. Have an understanding of the plasticity of the brain and how to provide opportunities for change. To develop an understanding of the theory and research evidence relating to Positive Psychology, resilience and well-being. 2. 13 CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AND PARENTING Who is the course for This is a multi-agency course suitable for professionals who work with children & their families and professionals who work with adults who are parents. Objectives By the end of this one-day workshop delegates will Understand and appreciate how to interpret parenting and children s responses using attachment theory and research as an analytic lens: 1. Understand the basis of childhood trauma 2. Appreciate how professionals are beginning to assess risk more effectively, using the concept of Low Mentalising Capacity 3. What works best when trying to help and support the family 4. How and why our relationship with family members is so crucial Faciliator: PROFESSOR DAVID SHEMMINGS OBE PhD is Professor of Child Protection Research at the University of Kent, UK and Visiting Professor of Child Protection Research at Royal Holloway, University of London. David Shemmings is an experienced social worker, senior manager and academic. He is the author of over 60 articles, books and chapters on relationally-based social work theory, research and practice. He has edited and published books on attachment together with his partner Yvonne Shemmings. David and Yvonne co-direct the Attachment and Relationship-based Practice training in over 40 child protection organisations across the UK and Europe. He is co-director, with Dr Jane Reeves, of the online Centre for Child Protection at the University of Kent. 20 DOMESTIC ABUSE RISK ASSESSMENT TRAINING This course is for Please note the training is for Children s Social Worker s only. What is the training for? There is now a new Template available on EIS called Risk Assessment for Domestic Abuse. This has been developed to aid analytical assessment of domestic abuse cases as a specialist risk assessment. The training will explore the new assessment, how to complete it and will involve reflective discussion around domestic abuse, the impact on children and sharing knowledge/resources. The sessions will be completed in a learning circle style which will be based around an interactive discussion. This training is for any staff member or volunteer who has contact with members of the public in Stockport who may have drug and alcohol issues. Aim The aim of this training is to increase awareness of drug and alcohol misuse and how motivational language can help to change people s behaviour. 73 Connect 5 Connect 5 is a training programme for people who work or volunteer in Stockport and want to help people they work with to improve their mental health and wellbeing. This training programme is in three stages. Participants can progress through the stages, depending on how much of their role involves working with people experiencing poor mental health and wellbeing. The sessions must be done in the correct numerical order (Session 1, then Session 2, then Session 3). Connect 5 courses are available at no charge to people and organisations based in Stockport and providing support to Stockport people. Connect 5 courses are interactive and practical, drawing upon the latest evidence about supporting people with their mental health and wellbeing. The courses support participants to gain skills and confidence and information about practical interventions. This is so that you will be able to respond helpfully to people experiencing poor mental health and wellbeing. Connect 5 Session 1 is a half-day introductory course to help you better understand the terminology around mental health, mental wellbeing and mental illness. You will also learn about local services and resources that enable people to help themselves. You will become confident to offer wellbeing advice within your everyday work or volunteering role. Connect 5 Sessions 2 and 3 are both full days of training, for people doing face-to-face work with people who have poor mental wellbeing, whether or not they have a diagnosed mental health condition. Connect 5 Session 2 is a one-day course designed to help you develop the understanding, skill and confidence to work with people on their troubling or difficult feelings. You will learn about the things they might do to understand these feelings and to help themselves to feel better.
