2 Booking a place on a training course To book a place on a course in this booklet you need to go to dorsetnexus.org.uk You will need to register for an account to be able to book a place by: click the sign-up link in school/organisation box insert the name of the youth club or project you work at in reason box enter I want to attend this training course when your request has been received and processed you will receive an with a password to enable you to log in (this can take a few days) log into your account and click on the training tab and search for the course you want to register for by putting youth work training in the find a course search box or the title of a specific course. Courses can be booked by an individual with a user account or a coordinator acting on behalf of others. 5 Course cancellation costs all courses booked via Dorset Nexus must be cancelled via this online system. Cancellations made via telephone, or will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. cancellations with at least 2 weeks notice will be accepted with no charges incurred. We do however reserve the right to apply up to full cost for any cancellations made with less than 2 weeks notice. if the event is funded/free and we cannot reuse the space created by your cancellation we reserve the right to apply a non-attendance fee of up to 50. Level 3 Safeguarding Training Youth workers who work full time or part time in a position of responsibility are advised to attend a Level 3 Safeguarding children and young people 2 day course. A 1 day update training is recommended every 3 years. These courses are organised by the Local Children s Safeguarding Board (LCSB). There is a separate cancellation policy for these courses. Level 2 Safeguarding children and young people - recommended level for support workers (pages 7-8) Level 3 Safeguarding children and young people - recommended level for youth workers who are responsible for a team of staff or a project (page 5) Recommended Youth Worker training Introduction to youth work see page 9 This course will help new youth workers gain a basic understanding in the skills and knowledge required for their new role. 7 Level 2 Safeguarding children and young people - including e-safety This course is essential for all youth workers (paid or voluntary) who are working in a support role and have not attended any previous safeguarding training. 8 Level 2 Safeguarding children and young people refresher This course is essential for part time youth workers (paid or voluntary) who have previously completed a Level 2 safeguarding children and young people course and are due a refresher (every 3 years). 10 Youth Worker in Charge Training Are you new to the role of a youth worker in charge of a session? Have you been working in this role for a while and would benefit from a course refreshing your knowledge and skills? 11 Emergency First Aid at Work This course is recommended for anyone who is employed with First Aid responsibilities. 12 Supporting Bereaved Children and Young People Workshop Working with young people who have experienced situations of bereavement such as the death of a family member, friend or a pet can be difficult. 13 Substance Misuse Are you up to date on current drugs available to young people? Do you know what category each drug fits into? The course will cover the following: information on the types of substances, their effects, routes of transmission and legal status an insight into why people use substances and why they stop harm reduction strategies worker techniques Course date: Saturday 27 October 2018 Dorset Youth Association, Dorchester 9:30am 4:00pm Course Trainer: Tamara Masters (EDP) EDP is an organisation that works with people who misuse substances helping them to deal with their addictions. 14 An introduction to LGBT (Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender) Having an understanding LGBT discrimination and its impact on young people is essential knowledge for youth workers The session will include interactive training, young people s stories and short videos plus the opportunity for questions and answers This course will cover the following: exploring types of discrimination and responsibilities to challenge effects of homophobia biphobia and transphobia understanding of the challenges that trans young people face importance of peer support and Rainbow Alliances defining gender; identity, presentation and biology creating inclusive environments Course date: Tuesday 5 June 2018 Dorset Youth Association, Dorchester 7:00pm 9:00pm Course date: Monday 8 October 2018 Wimborne Community Learning Resource Centre 7:00pm 9:00pm Course Trainer: Sarah Grayer (SPACE) SPACE is an organisation that support Dorset s youth who are or may be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or anything in between. 15 Motivating Young People and Dealing with Challenging Behaviour Motivating young people and dealing with challenging behaviour are essential skills for a youth worker. This course will provide you with some excellent resources and skills to use with young people and will cover the following: developing methods to motivate young people exploring appropriate methods of communication in relation to motivation understanding What is conflict? working with young people around conflict issues exploring appropriate language when dealing with conflict Course date: Saturday 16 February 2019 Dorset Youth Association, Dorchester 9:30am 4:00pm Course Trainer: Natasha Emin (Life Train UK) Natasha brings her unique style to a training workshop. She has many years of experience working with young people and offers ideas and resources for working with young people. Most people who attend her training return for another workshop! 16 Self-Harm and Suicide This is a 2 day course for anyone working with young people who are dealing with this difficult issue. The course is informative whilst addressing head-on the taboo subject of self-harm and suicide. The course will cover the following: Day one - Self-Harm myths surrounding self-harm deliberate self-harm risk indicators for self-harming behaviour cycle of self-harm working with distressed young people how can I get help? 17 Youth Mental Health First Aid - Awareness One in ten young people experience a mental health issue at any one time with record levels of young people struggling. Academic pressure, social media, bullying, poverty, lack of availability of professional mental health support have all been named as contributing to this epidemic of poor mental health in our young people. This one day course will enable you to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems and how to provide initial help. It will also provide advice on how to guide a young person towards appropriate professional help. The course will cover the following: why Youth Mental Health First Aid? what is mental health and mental ill health? stigma and discrimination the five steps of mental health first aid areas of mental health such as Depression, Suicide, Anxiety, Psychosis, Self-Harm and Eating Disorders recovery and promoting resilience Course date: Saturday 22 September 2018 The Training Centre Dorchester Youth Centre 9:30am 3:30pm Course date: Thursday 25 October 2018 The Children s Centre, Blandford 9:30am 4:00pm Course Trainer: Pamela Melville, DCC Educational Psychologist Course costs: Group 1 and 2: Free Group 3: 50 17
18 Only When U R Ready Not every young person will have had sufficient opportunity to reflect upon their decision to become sexually active. The Only When U R Ready approach aims to support young people to wait until they feel certain that to become sexually active, or to continue to be so is what they want. The course will cover the following: the causes and effects of early sex the role played by media and peer pressure on young people the distinction between Only When U R Ready and abstinence ways of working with young people to help them to make positive and healthy decisions for themselves how to say no and resist pressure skills alternatives to having sex for example exploring intimacy and sensuality in non-sexual ways the role played by friends, supportive adults and school staff in supporting Only When U R Ready new approaches to building young people s self-esteem Course date: Wednesday 7 November 2018 The Children s Centre Blandford 9:30am 4:00pm Course date: Saturday 9 February 2019 The Training Centre, Dorchester 9:30 4:00pm Course Trainer: Lisa Handy (Dorset Healthcare) Course costs: Group 1 and 2: Free Group 3: 50 18

21 QCF Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice A Nationally Recognised Qualification Accredited by ABC Awards Youth workers working face to face with young people (paid or voluntary) and who would like to gain a nationally recognised qualification in youth work practice can register for the following courses. QCF Level 2 Certificate: This level of qualification is for a paid or voluntary youth support worker for example those working under the supervision of a more experienced youth worker. QCF Level 3 Diploma: This level of qualification for a paid or voluntary youth worker whose role involves taking on responsibilities for example being in charge of a youth work project or session. To register for a place on these courses it is essential that the youth worker: is aged 16 years and above has a paid or voluntary position working face to face with young people works one session (or approximately 3 hours) per week for Level 2 Certificate and 2 or more sessions for the Level 3 Diploma course has a Line Manager who is a qualified youth worker has completed the following courses; Introduction to Youth Work and Safeguarding Children and Young People Completing the qualification: The Level 2 Award, Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice requires the learner to attend taught workshop sessions and complete a portfolio of evidence. Each learner is allocated an assessor who will provide support during the course and assessment of the required evidence. 21
22 Competence is assessed in the following areas: Practical ability: Assessment of practical competence is carried out through observation, personal recordings and discussion with the Line Manager, other colleagues and young people. Knowledge: Underpinning knowledge is acquired through attending a series of workshops. The knowledge is then assessed through the completion of a workbook for each unit. Training workshops: It is a requirement of the course that you attend the required workshops sessions. The course intake will be in September 2018 (depending on demand). 25 Dorset Award Scheme The Dorset Award scheme provides youth workers with a tool for recognising young people s achievements. It can be tailored to the needs of different young people so can be used with a wide range of abilities. The award has two levels: The Dorset Award: A 10-hour programme for school year 7+ The Dorset Award Plus: A 20-hour programme for school year 9+ To achieve the award young people are required to engage in a programme which is supported by a youth worker. This programme could include: participating in a programme leading to a change in behaviour working as a senior member/junior leader in a youth club organising a sport competition or activity participating in an arts or sports project taking part in a community project After completing the required hours on the programme the young person and the youth worker are required to provide evidence of the learning achieved through the activity (forms are provided for this) The young person will then receive a certificate to acknowledge their achievements.
