Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of intheknow The New Year brings with it a great sense of renewal, opportunities and a buzz of excitement that carries us through the colder months. However, with so many people living on their own, it can be a tough time of year. At Age UK West Sussex we strive to keep in touch and provide a lifeline for those suffering from loneliness. See our centre pages on how we are helping communities across the county. The Spring season can still be very chilly but that hasn t stopped one group of ladies venturing out to our Redwood Centre in Haywards Heath. They have been incredibly busy leading the Big Knit campaign with our other centres. Together they have knitted a staggering 4,000 Innocent drinks hats to help raise money for vulnerable older people: turn to page 11 to find out more. Like the Knit and Natter ladies there s always so much happening at Age UK West Sussex, from fundraising activities and social events, to our busy and popular Information and Advice Services. As with all charities we rely heavily on volunteer support and this year we ask more of you to jump on board and help us continue our vital work for older people across the region. See pages 2 and 3 for more information. Vicki Rayment Editor Love later life!

See the difference you can make for older people in West Sussex Volunteer with us In 2016 Age UK West Sussex is hoping to reach more people than ever across the county to help them love later life! To do this and make a real impact in the community we are seeking an army of new recruits to join our volunteer network. Age UK West Sussex has nearly 300 volunteers who donate time and skills to us. To help us support even more older people we need to enlist volunteers from all walks of life across the county. In fact, we need volunteers like Pauline Payne who gives her valuable time and kindness at our Silver Birch Centre in Crawley. Pauline works at ASDA in Crawley, as a Community Life Champion. She is a key member who gets involved with everything, says Silver Birch manager Tracy Olckers. Pauline receives her award from Jeremy Yeats-Edwards, Chairman for CCVS Whether she is serving tea and coffee, manning the reception or helping to organise flu jabs, then Pauline is always ready to help. As a warm hearted gesture, Tracy really wanted to say a big thank you to Pauline for her help, so she nominated her to receive a Volunteers Award from Crawley CVS by way of recognition for her significant support and efforts. Pauline is a much valued member of the team and we hope that ASDA continue to support Pauline and us by freeing her up to help us here. We are delighted she won the award. All our volunteers are brilliant and I wanted to show Pauline how much she is appreciated, Tracy continues. If you have some spare time and would like to make a difference to older people in your community then Age UK West Sussex would love to hear from you! How can you get involved? Check out our new leaflet! 2

10 Age UK West Sussex works with local businesses to bring Christmas joy for older people in the county 8 Christmas can be a particularly tough time of year for older people who may not have seen or spoken to a friend, neighbour or family member during the festive season. Across West Sussex we have been working hard to reach out to those suffering from loneliness, and during December Age UK West Sussex played host to a number of Christmas lunches, parties and other activities in our centres across the region. To help make Christmas magical for older people this year we were extremely fortunate to work alongside some fantastic local businesses to help us step up our campaign. In Chichester, our nearby John Lewis store ran a month-long campaign to give support to our Laburnum Centre in a number of ways including fundraising instore and helping to run an Age UK West Sussex weekend promotion at the beginning of December! A fundraising staff bake-off at John Lewis proved a terrific success and who better to judge it than local cake shop owner, Linda Charge of Cake Magic? Linda, from the Bersted-based shop also baked a fabulous Man on the Moon cake in fruit which was used to promote our campaign and fundraise for our Laburnum Centre. On top of all of this, staff from the Chichester store volunteered their time to ensure the centre's members received the best Christmas lunch ever and they also went the extra mile to come and help out at for our volunteers' party! We also received kind support from Littlehampton-based charity, The Body Shop Foundation which organised a Giving Tree celebration on behalf of staff at the cosmetics retailer. Some 40 presents were given by The Body Shop and members across our centres were delighted. The Foundation also donated lots of product goodies for our volunteers party at The Laburnum. Centre managers sent the following messages... Tracy Olckers Silver Birch Centre Manager: We delivered the presents to three of our centre members on Christmas Eve and the look on their faces was worth a million! It was a lovely gesture from staff at The Body Shop and it meant so much to them to receive a personal gift at this time of the year. Sue Rixon Tamarisk Centre Manager: A gift reminds us that people care and have warmth and kindness in their hearts towards a stranger. It is a very generous gesture and much appreciated. Sarah Hart Cherry Tree Centre Co-ordinator: Some of our members will be spending Christmas alone and it will mean a lot to them to know that someone has thought about them. Your gifts symbolises the message that they have not been forgotten. Thank you so much. Gary Hardley Laburnum Centre Manager: We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses and would like to thank everyone involved in making this year so special for our members and volunteers. Arun District Council and Bognor Town Hall staff also gave generously, with presents for Tamarisk and Laburnum Centre members.

13 Centre fundraising update Fundraising News Laburnum Gym members at the Bognor centre have been doing a triathlon to the North Pole, where they had the option to cycle, run or row and pay 1 per mile. To date they have raised just over 1500 with less than 700 miles to go. The Christmas Bazaar was popular with some 14 outside stalls selling various festive items, along with our Tombola and raffle, raising 500. The Laburnum Community Choir held their Christmas concert with a raffle and auctioned items raising in excess of 400. This year, members are going to be raising funds by running the Bognor 10K, Boxing Day Pagham Pram Race and more. Tamarisk The Littlehampton centre has been overwhelmed by the generosity of many local businesses including Waitrose, Hollands Funeral Directors, Tesco and Sainsburys. Children at Tickle Me Too nursery presented harvest festival goodies. The Body Shop and Arun District Council also held Christmas Giving Trees which enabled staff to give seasonal gifts, and East Preston Church provided Christmas lunch for 12 members. Tamarisk members also went on a trip on the Bluebell Railway thanks to a kind local donation. Centre Manager, Sue Rixon would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone for their generosity. Fundraising at the centre has topped 2311 to date following various card sales, bric-a-brac, coffee mornings and specially organised events and days. Cherry Tree Volunteers from the Cherry Tree teamed up with the centre co-ordinator to fundraise outside the local Tesco store just before Christmas. Despite the chilly conditions, spirits were high and the team met many people from the local community who spoke positively and in support of the services provided. The cut price coffee and tea from Harris and Hoole also kept everyone going! A very successful 120 was raised. Redwood There s been plenty of fundraising fun happening at our Haywards Heath centre, not least with a 60s themed night and raffle last Autumn, plus a Thanksgiving lunch and raffle in November which raised nearly 300. The Christmas lunch proved very successful thanks to Graham Cloake who supported the centre by making a donation to pay for the Hat Man entertainment. A very enjoyable time was had by all. Also, the Knit and Natter group have been beavering away knitting hats for the Big Knit a joint campaign between Age UK and Innocent drinks. Every bottle sold will help generate a 25p donation to us to help vulnerable, older people during the cold winter months. So keep your eye out in stores! Centre Co-ordinator, Jo Hodgson extended her warm thanks to all the ladies who contributed again this year! Take a look at some of the hats they knitted. Knit and Natter! 17 Staff and members at our Crawley Centre have something to celebrate! Thanks to a shared grant of 1.3m of National Lottery Funding for a sensory garden and outside area. Members Olga Masters (left) and Yvonne Kendall (right), with Activity worker Kathy Beecham (centre) picture courtesy of the Crawley News Age UK West Sussex have been picked along with a number of charities and organisations, to receive a share of funding which will help to improve the wellbeing of patients with dementia. Working with Learning Through Landscapes, the idea is to make the gardens accessible for everyone. Experts will help to create a sensory garden and outdoor space where people can plant flowers and grow fruit and vegetables. Speaking recently to the Crawley News, Tracy Olckers our Crawley Manager said: We want to create an appealing garden that will be safe and accessible for everyone. Every Thursday we run a dementia service and one of the main themes of the design is going to be a sensory area to make the garden stimulating. We will introduce plants people will be familiar with and they will be bright and highly scented. A lot of our users now live in sheltered accommodation so they either don t have a garden of their own or they are unable to use it like they used to. Another feature we hope to introduce is a raised garden bed at waist height to avoid the problem of kneeling and bending down. Left: Herne Bay pilot project We want our users to be able to take ownership of the garden. There will be opportunities to grow root vegetables, fruit and herbs that we can use in our kitchen, said Tracy. The Learning Through Landscapes charity said outdoor spaces in many dementia care homes were rarely used but residents missed their own gardens. It followed a pilot project at Age UK Herne Bay, Kent. According to Sue Cliffe, from Age UK Herne Bay, the landscaper also laid paths which always return to the beginning and beds with familiar flowers. Through the pilot she has witnessed the positive effect for those using the service and said that it has promoted their health and wellbeing by improving mobility, increasing relaxation and reducing anxiety. 15
