3 Welcome OPPORTUNITY to do things you want to do CHOICE control of your future HOPE believing a meaningful life is possible We are delighted to welcome you to our first Bedfordshire and Luton Recovery College prospectus. The Recovery College was launched in May 2016 along with the launch of the Bedfordshire and Luton Mental Health Academy which is a formal partnership with East London Foundation NHS Trust (ELFT) and the University of Bedfordshire. The educational workshops and courses we offer all focus on recovery and wellbeing. They are designed and delivered in partnership with people with lived experience and professional experience as Co-production is at the heart of everything we do. 4 Recovery is a personal journey of discovery (Repper and Perkins,2012) 5

4 Information about the Recovery College Recovery has many definitions and one which resonates with many people is that it is about a deeply personal journey to live as well as possible and have a meaningful and satisfying life. The tools we share in workshops and courses aim to support people to become an expert in their own recovery and that of others by exploring hope, control and opportunity. By learning together we can make progress in challenging the stigma surrounding mental illness and over time we hope to contribute to changing society to be more tolerant, inclusive, accepting and compassionate. Mental health wellbeing affects us all. Our Recovery College is inclusive for all; service users, carers, family, friends, neighbours, staff and the general public are all welcome to enrol as students. 6 7

People with personal and professional experience of mental health problems work together, equally, to design, facilitate and evaluate the courses and workshops. Our workshops and courses are co facilitated by a broad range of professional staff and people with lived experience including, University Lecturers, Doctors, Mental Health Staff, Student Nurses alongside the expertise from staff from partner organisations. 8 9

Our partner list is growing as we further develop the range of courses and workshops for the next Recovery College prospectus. 7 How Do I Enrol Most of our workshops and courses are free of charge and open to service users, carers, staff, relatives, friends and public to attend. Some cours facilitated by MIND BLMK have eligibility criteria as described in the timetable. When you find a workshop or course you want to attend please enrol as detailed below. You must enrol due to a limitation of numbers of people that can be accommodated on each of the workshops and courses. Please give us as much notice as possible to enable us to offer the place to another student. Venues Our workshops and courses are facilitated at various venues in Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton. Venue addresses can be found in the timetable. If you have any queries about a venue please contact us. 8 Frequently asked questions All workshops and courses are free of charge. Who runs the courses? All workshops and courses are co-produced and are facilitated involving at least 1 person with lived experience and 1 professional. The professionals include staff and students from the University of Bedfordshire, NHS staff and staff from partner organisations. Who can enrol? Our courses are for everyone People who use ELFT services People who are living with mental health problems Carers, family, friends, neighbours and general public (a few workshops related to employment may have some specific criteria) Volunteers Staff from ELFT, University of Bedfordshire and local partner organisations People need to be age 18 and over Do I need to be referred to attend a workshop / course? No one needs a referral to become a student please contact us if you would like to enrol to attend a workshop or course Do you provide refreshments? Most if not all the venues we use offer tea, coffee (depending on the venues facilities) We are not able to provide lunch but you are welcome to bring something with you. Do you pay travel costs for students? We cannot reimburse you for any travel costs. Will I get a place on the workshop / course I want? The student places on our workshops / courses are allocated on a first come first served basis. If there is particularly high demand for a workshop we will endeavour to facilitate an additional workshop Do you provide child care? You would need to make your own child care arrangements

Time will be spent working as a group and as individuals talking, listening, writing and reading. It does not matter if you haven t written before this workshop will help you to set your words down in an order that pleases you and says what you want to say. What happens to our physical self because the result of being angry. What will I learn? Week 1: Building confidence, Self-esteem. Week 2: Anxiety and depression - tools and techniques. Week 3: Anger awareness. Week 4: Sleep. Delivered in small groups, the sessions are diverse and aim to meet the needs of all participants. Each programme is intended to provide participants with emotional and practical tools to use and support their everyday life and wellbeing. 14 Timetable Building on Knowledge and Skills Understanding depression Understanding the signs, symptoms, causes and treatment of depression is a key step towards managing the problem. This workshop covers essential information about depression, how it is diagnosed and treatment options. It also includes listening to different experiences and learning from others. Understanding Psychosis This workshop looks at what psychosis means, explores a variety of treatment options and ways to promote recovery and self help. Understanding Bi Polar The aim of this workshop is to explore what is meant by bi polar disorder how it is diagnosed and treated. Ways to manage bi polar and how to support someone you care for will also be explored. Understanding autism This workshop will look at what is Autism. Diagnosis, treatment and care options will be discussed and explored. Understanding Hearing Voices This workshop will provide people with support, knowledge and insight into hearing voices and explore ways to manage their experiences in everyday life. Introduction to Mental Health First Aid An informative and interactive workshop that will help you to recognise the early signs and symptoms of mental distress and potential mental illness. The workshop will help you to feel confident about recognising, responding and helping someone to get them the help they need. Presentation Skills Increasingly we are asked to talk to other people either formally or informally about work related topics or presenting our life experiences. This friendly interactive workshop will help you, in a safe environment to develop your confidence in presenting to others. You do not need to have any previous experience. 16 Timetable Getting Involved Working Together Co-production in Action This workshop will explore the role of collaborative working between people with lived experience of mental health problems and people who have experience by profession. Interviewing Skills Help us to employ the right people This workshop tells you the things you need to know to be able to participate on staff Interview Panels as a service user or carer representative. With other service users and carers you will learn about how the Trust recruits people, how interview panels work and what you need to know to be a good interview panel member. The most important thing is that you will bring the voice and experience of service users and carers to the interview panel and help the Trust and University to employ the right people.
