Great effort by all who assisted, but a huge thanks to Bren for his tireless work over many weeks to make this a super fundraiser. Jo also brought us up to date on the Burleigh Heads C&K Kindergarten. Members will recall that we were successful in beign awarded a $15k Stronger Communities Program grant to replace a damaged and leaking pergola at the kinder. Next step is to make it happen, so watch this space when we call for volunteers to assist to make it happen by early 2016 Treasurer: Jacquie has collected 60 footballs and 42 small shirts to go in our East Timor container. $1000 has been received for NYSF. Jacqui also brief us on hers and Andy s graduation from the Rotary Leadership Institute 3 day program on Sunday, and urged other Club members to put their name forward to attend the next, which is scheduled for early in 2016 (dates to be advised) at Broadbeach. Club Service: No report Community: Andy has been working hard to secure a deal with Pacific Fair shopping complex for our Club to have a booth there once a month for all of This is a fantastic opportunity for us to do some serious recruiting and tell the world about the wonderful work done by Rotary. We can t sell anything (eg raffle tix) or collect $s and all members will be called upon to take their turn at our booth. Andy also spoke about the proposed new Satellite Club (see info at end of this newsletter) and asked members to keep their need RDUs to hand out at Pacific Fair during Pls give to Rhonda and she will put a BHR sticker on them in readiness for our Pacific Fair promotions. International: Bren broke all records this morning (or was he just Beatriz-ed out after the weekend) and gave us a short speil. Only three weeks to go before we list, catalogue, load, label and finally shut the door on our container bound for East Timor. 3 He urged members to read his of stuff sent late last night, with more to follow. Any members who can assist to collect parking gold coins at Marymount this Saturday should contact Bren for details as proceeds will be directed towards the purchase of computers (hopefully 30) and laptops (hopefully 10) to go in our container. Please contact Bren if you have a computer that you d like to donate. Vocational: Catherine told us about how wonderfully well our Interactors did at the GC Women in Business Awards last week. Georgia Leak (Interactor and school captain) did everyone proud when she took out an award. Go Georgia Youth: Anthony told us that while we had asked for a youth exchange student, none were available this year. Wearing his membership hat, Anthony told us that Graeme, Julie and June have been unwell and everyone got the chance to sign a Get Well Card for them. New member It was a first for Pres Jo when she had the honour of inducting Trevor May into our Club. Trevor then did a quick lap of honour around the room and did a lot of hand shaking. Warm welcome Trevor from everyone in the Club. Guest speaker We gave a warm Burleigh Heads RC welcome to PDG Sandra doumany, who told us about the soon-to-be establish Satellite Club at Southern Cross University. It was a reality check when Sandra told us that RI has labelled the year 2022 as a year of doom. Why? Well, with many clubs having an older demographic, that s the year when the demographic will catch up with Clubs or Rotary s days are numbered.

4 RI, Clubs and Rotarians must all take this on board and work towards revitalising membership if Rotary is to survive. Sandra told us how it is becoming more difficult to start a new club due to lack of potential members, however there is an innovative way we can do this. Satellite clubs. Our district has several satellite clubs, eg: at Griffith, Bond Universities, that are either chartered or about to be chartered and these are going from strength to strength. Sandra let us know that she had approached our Club Board about establishing a satellite club at Southern Cross University and for our Club to be the sponsoring Club. The Board has given approval but members must give their approval as well. You can read all about satellite clubs in the attachment at the end of this bulletin. Sandra told us how University are used as the base for satellite clubs as they have the right demographic. To be chartered, a prospective satellite club must have a minimum of eight members, of which five will be on the satellite club s board. Existing Rotarians cannot be foundation members of a satellite club but may become members once chartered. Being host to a satellite club is a very attractive proposition for Rotary clubs as members are officially members of the host club. While satellite clubs have their own board, the host club takes an active role in mentoring the club and its members and attend board meetings. One of the benefits of a satellite club is that they can adopt a flexible approach to where/when they hold meetings, which is a great attraction to students and those who lead busy lives. Club members were asked to approve our Club being the host of the new satellite club, and the response was a resounding YES. Sam Doumany likened a satellite club to a kangaroo with a joey. The joey can hop in and out of the mother s pouch until it is old enough to stand along. Same for a satellite club as it looks to the host club for guidance, it can apply to become a Rotary club in its own right once it believes is has the experience needed to do so.

5 It is a win/win all round. Thanks to Andy for initiating our role in this and we look forward to all Club members taking an active role in the new satellite club. 6 BACKGROUND SATELLITE ROTARY CLUB GUIDELINES At the 2013 Council on Legislation provision was made for the formation of satellite clubs and these Guidelines are prepared for the purpose of assisting clubs in the District to understand the provisions and implement action to form satellite clubs if so desired. What is a satellite club? A satellite club is defined as a potential club whose members shall also be members of the sponsor club. It is likely that the satellite club would not initially have the required number of members to charter a club and the purpose of conducting the satellite club is to give the potential club time to obtain the required number of members for chartering. Thus there needs to be a sponsor club which forms the satellite club in the same locality as the sponsor club, or in the surrounding area. The name of the satellite club shall be the Rotary Satellite Club of (insert name which does not have to mirror exactly the name of the sponsoring club but needs to be an adjoining location, eg. Eynesbury for Melton Valley RC). The members of the satellite club shall also be members of the sponsor club until such time as the satellite club shall be admitted into membership of RI as a Rotary Club. Satellite clubs shall hold regular weekly meetings just like any Rotary club at a time and day decided by its members. Governance of a Satellite Club The sponsor club shall provide such general oversight and support to a satellite club as is deemed appropriate by the sponsor club s board. There shall be a satellite club board comprising a chairman, immediate past chairman, chairman-elect, secretary and treasurer as well four to six other members of the club. The board shall be elected annually by the satellite club members. The satellite board shall be responsible for the day to day organization and management of the satellite club and its activities in accordance with rotary rules, requirements, policies, aims and objectives under the guidance of the sponsor club. It shall have no authority within, or over, the sponsor club. A satellite club shall annually submit to the president and board of the sponsor club a report on its membership, its activities and programs, accompanied by a financial 1

8 t es ers u q Re emb our r m at y ng u yo nate eeti do xt m ne Celebrate Children's Day, 25 October 2015 Donate a gold coin to ROMAC and save a child s life Every dollar donated goes directly to saving children's lives ROMAC's volunteer Rotarians have organised life changing and life saving medical operations for over 400 children with severe burns, facial deformities, heart and lung conditions, and so many more conditions for treatment in our local hospitals that they cannot access in their home countries. Children like baby Specialina and mum Einoma, pictured above, who upon arrival from Nauru were immediately transported to hospital where the cardiac team was waiting to operate. Fortunately, the operation was a success and, following a few days recuperating in the intensive care unit, for the first time Einoma heard her child speak It was not long after that Specialina returned home a bright, happy child who had already started to put on weight. You can help your fellow Rotarians continue their humanitarian work at your next meeting with a Gold Coin donation to support this great Rotary cause.
