The night was great and it reminded me of how easy it is to make friends in Rotary. The night itself was windy and chilly as we arrived. Inside there were many familiar faces to chat with before I even had a chance to reach Clayton's tables. Speaking with Judith our AG and the President of Nunawading Sue; they wanted to hear all about our change over night as I wanted to hear about theirs. Both it seems were great celebrations of Rotary and all it can achieve. I also ran into people I have met with the Rotary Leadership training days: all of whom remembered my name. I can see I am going to have to get much better with names. Then over to our tables and Lesley magically appeared with a drink before I knew it, thank you Lesley. We all chatted all night; Warren's ears must have been red with me on one side and Noela on the other. We shared our table with some people from Croydon, the conversation flowed and we shared lots of great ideas. The night was a great celebration of the year with DG Merv and his team, and the opportunity to hear of Tony and Kathy's plans for the year ahead. It is the first week of the school holidays and the weather is very chilly. Winter is here and we have our first fundraiser for this year, a BBQ. Let s hope the weather doesn't keep all those Bunnings customers away! A number of our club are about to head over seas and we hope you have a great time; we will miss you and look forward to hearing all those great stories when you return. Remember to keep thinking of different opportunities for raising funds and having fun at Rotary this coming year. Thank you to Richard who is beginning to work on our programming this year: if you have any ideas please let him know. 2 Rotary Four Way Test "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" Last Meeting & Notes Last Meeting (30 th June): Apologies = Ed Allchin, John Goldspink, Jon Breisch, Heather Norling, Richard Simmons, Dianne Sides and Glenys Pattison. Make Ups = Heather Norling, Jim Cochrane & Jean Cochrane (DG s Changeover), Dianne Sides (Community Meeting). Leave of Absence = Cheryl O Toole. Visitors = Sam Oddo (Friend of Rotary), Gaye Barnes (Honorary Member). This week the club members had a discussion on the Rotary Year Ahead. President Bronwen gave a quick rundown on some of the important things which included, Discussion, Planning, Sharing and having Fun to be the four most important priorities for a successful year. Bronwen then shared her ideas she had in mind for fundraising and also asked the club members to think of good opportunities for fundraising as well. Bronwen also gave quick update on the items raised at the last Board Meeting for those members who are not on the board. Meeting Notes: Warren Fricke informed the members of the new changes of the cost to the membership subscription. The fees will now be $350 instead of last years $245, which can also be paid in two half yearly payments. The new cost now includes the removal of the $5 a week cost which was included as part of the meal cost to support special guests and guest speakers meals. The new weekly cost will now be $15 instead of $20, and if you do not eat there is no cost on the night to be paid. If there are any questions on this new format please contact Warren Fricke. Bronwen Lamond informed and reminder the members of the upcoming club and Rotaract changeovers over the next month. See dates in this bulletin. John Barnes spoke about the Foundation Dinner which is planned for Monday 8 th December and will be run by our club. A sub committee has been started to plan for this event. Lesley Zuccaro reminded the members that we have a BBQ at Bunnings Notting Hill on Saturday 5 th July. So far the morning shift (8:30 am to 12:30 pm) has been filled and one more person is required for the afternoon shift (12:30 pm to 4:00 pm). If you can help see Lesley. Bronwen Lamond informed the members that 50 th Birthday is coming up on Friday 17 th April A small committee has now been setup to prepare for this big event. If anyone has a got any ideas on how this night should be run or even a good location, please contact Bronwen. Lesley Zuccaro informed the members about the District Membership Drive which is currently in motion. Ralph Zuccaro spoke about the Humanity in Motion Down Under books which have been supplied to our club. This is the most significant public relations project in the past 30 years by Rotary Down Under and something for Rotary clubs to share with great pride to communities right across Australia. It was agreed that we would put a club contact in the book and members have been asked to leave a copy of the book in various locations around our local community. Bronwen Lamond asked members if that had any good ideas for the club program, if they could pass them on to the program chairperson, Richard Simmons. Some good examples which were raised at the meeting included, Movie Nights, Work Place visits and meetings at different locations. Ralph Zuccaro gave a Secretary s Report which included an update of our funding of five Indonesian students. Ralph has the details of five new students which we have agreed to sponsor at $110 each. Warren Fricke gave a Treasurers Report. The semi annual dues will be paid this week. Warren also informed the members that we will be away for the next 5 weeks. Bronwen Lamond reminded the Board Members that the next board meeting is on the 21 st July after the General Meeting. 7 th July 2014 Page 2 of 12 Volume 49, Number 2

3 THE OBJECT OF ROTARY 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Bill Sides also informed the club that we will be sponsoring Ami Liu to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Ami is Chinese and came to Australia to teach Chinese at McKinnon Primary School for a year and was so successful, that they offered her full time employment this year. Bronwen & Lesley will pick up Ami from RYLA on the completion of the week. Joke of the Week A woman at the supermarket checkout suddenly decided to use a credit card to pay for her purchases. As she went through her handbag she put a remote control for a television on the counter. The shop assistant asked if she always carried it with her. "No, not always," she replied. "But my husband would not come out shopping with me and I decided it was the worst thing I could do to him and still be legal." Rotary International News President Burton reflects on his call to Engage Rotary, Change Lives By Ryan Hyland Rotary News 30-Jun-2014 President Ron Burton speaks at the 2014 New Generations Preconvention meeting in Sydney. Photo Credit: Rotary International/Monika Lozinska Ron Burton has made the world his office. Over the past year, the Rotary International president has traveled more than half-a-million miles across 50 countries, to inspire and motivate Rotary's 1.2 million members. Although many encouraged him to use cheaper, virtual alternatives, he believes it takes face-to-face engagement. 7 th July 2014 Page 7 of 12 Volume 49, Number 2

8 "I was the first president to have a Google Hangout and have done Facebook chats," Burton says, reflecting on his term, which ends at midnight 30 June. "But I asked Rotarians this year to Engage Rotary, Change Lives, so I needed to live that as well, by sitting at kitchen tables talking to families, visiting community projects, speaking to clubs, and [meeting] with other leaders around the world to promote Rotary's good work." Burton, Rotary's 105th president, calls the job one of "awesome and great responsibility." "It's a great honor to follow in the footsteps of [Rotary's founder] Paul Harris," says Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, in the U.S. "When I travel around the world, I'm able to meet Rotarians from every walk of life and every culture. And all of them have such a deep respect for the office." He adds that it's been important to remember that "this position isn't about me. It's about the job." The job of Rotary president essentially begins election to the position a year before taking office. Presidents-elect set an agenda for the coming year, pick committee chairs, and work on the convention program. All of that, Burton says, is to set the stage for a successful term. And looking back on the past two years, he's reminded of an adage from back home. "There's a saying in Oklahoma that where you go in life, whatever job you set out to do, you should always leave the woodpile a little higher than it was when you found it," he says. "With the tremendous support of Rotarians worldwide, I believe we accomplished that this year." A big contribution to that woodpile is one of the things Burton is most proud. He asked each one of his 537 district governors to make a gift to The Rotary Foundation. No matter the size of the contribution or the fund, he wanted all of them to show support for the Foundation. And they did, becoming the first district governor class to make that commitment, raising more than $700,000. "What we're talking about here is a change of thinking, a change in culture," says Burton. "There needs to be the thought that this is our Foundation and the more we support it, the more lives we can change." President-elect Gary Huang followed Burton's lead and has asked his own class of governors to do the same. The group has already contributed $1 million for the Foundation. "I hope what we started becomes a tradition with all Rotary presidents," says Burton. Another highlight of the year was during the Victory Over Polio celebration in February at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. The nationally televised event hailed India's third consecutive year of being polio-free. Burton was among several speakers that included Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, and World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan. What made the event memorable for Burton was a small gesture that had a big impact. Before leaving the stage President Mukherjee walked over to Burton, shook his hand, and thanked him and Rotary for their incredible contribution to India's accomplishments. Burton says the gesture "shows the respect Rotary has in India and the tremendous appreciation for what we've done. It was a proud moment for me and Rotary." 7 th July 2014 Page 8 of 12 Volume 49, Number 2

9 Sydney convention caps off "unforgettable" year For Rotary presidents, the convention is the pinnacle of their terms. "I couldn't have asked for a better convention. What I was most proud of [was] our speakers," he says of the convention in Sydney. "Every one of them spoke with such enthusiasm and brought a unique and powerful message that relates to what we do at Rotary. I heard from so many Rotarians afterward how great they were." Burton was especially impressed with the speakers on the last day who focused on new generations and the future of Rotary, calling it the most important message of the event. "Our youth program participants and alumni can be one of our strongest assets moving forward," he says. "And the speakers who represented this movement knocked the message out of the park. If that doesn't wake up this organization, I don't know what will." During his final speech of the convention, Burton became emotional as he thanked Rotarians for their support during his year. "It was a bittersweet moment. It hit me during the end of my speech how great our organization is and why. It's because of the people in the audience," he says. Burton is looking forward to returning to Oklahoma after two years of being away. "I can't wait to spend time with my family and hanging out at my pool all day," he says. Burton, who has held almost every senior-level position at Rotary, says there's one thing important to remember when he leaves office. "On July first, I'm going to hold only one title and it's the most important: Rotarian." 7 th July 2014 Page 9 of 12 Volume 49, Number 2
