A small club that works so hard and achieves so much in a year. Both past president Doug and president David spoke with enthusiasm about the goals which can be achieved by working with other clubs. We were certainly made to feel very welcome and we look forward to the year ahead with them: more golf parking, love those early mornings. I will put Brenda on stand by now Warren. There are a number of opportunities coming up to join with other clubs: sharing ideas and having fun. Challenge to lead; the program focuses on developing leaders the core focus of youth and vocational development. A project of the Rotary Club of Doncaster, if we are interested they have a 15 minute presentation they can share with us. Have a look at the web site and let Richard know your thoughts. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner a social evening to raise funds for Polio. Would you like to host or attend a dinner party? Saturday October 18th is Purple for Polio day at 7 pm will we join the dinner party? Read further details in the bulletin and let Richard know your thoughts. Would you like to see Jersey boys with Noble Park Rotary on July 24th? I have seen the movie during my holidays and now have the CD booming in my car. I hope Lesley and our RYLA candidate enjoy listening on our Road trip Saturday; perhaps they may need ear plugs. I will let you know next week. See you Monday, travellers I hope you are having fun. This is a make-up and counts as attendance credit when you are not able to attend a meeting of your own club. Details for all District 9810 clubs can be obtained in the district directory or website Details for clubs around the world are available in the RI Directory (held by the club secretary) and on the RI website ( Reminders Please ensure that the club is aware if you will be missing a meeting. Contact Ralph Zuccaro on by 4 pm on the day of the meeting, if you are not going to be present. Contributions for inclusion into the Bulletin should be passed to michaele@netspace.net.au by Thursday evening of each week. Please remember if you cannot perform your rostered job, it is your duty to find a replacement to take your place. Joke of the Week A horse trainer gave his hurdle jockey detailed instructions before the big race. He told the rider: As you approach each jump lean forward and say up and over in the horse s ear. If you say these words you are on a winner. The jockey decided against saying this because he thought the other riders in the race would poke fun at him. Off the field went and at the first jump the horse bungled it, crashing through the brush. At the second the same thing happened. The rider just managed to stay in the saddle both times. He was losing so much ground he decided to follow instructions. At the third he spoke to the horse and the animal cleared the jump like a bird. At every jump the jockey said up and over to his mount. They went to the front and cleared away for an easy win. Back in the mounting enclosure, the trainer greeted him with the words: What happened at the first two jumps? Didn t you say what I told you to? Yes, lied the rider. He must be deaf. Deaf? Deaf? replied the trainer. No, he s not deaf. Blind yes, but definitely not deaf. 14 th July 2014 Page 7 of 12 Volume 49, Number 3
8 Rotary International News Drug wars, financial setbacks no match for Mexico clinic By Daniela Garcia Rotary News 2-Jul-2014 Manju Varghese, a volunteer at the clinic, conducts an eye exam. Photo Credit: Courtesy of The Guerrero Clinic About 300 miles south of Ciudad Juarez, one of Mexico's most dangerous cities, is the small town of Guerrero in central Chihuahua. The community is home to the Guerrero Clinic, which has weathered neighboring drug wars and financial setbacks to treat the poor since Walter Branson, a member of the Rotary Club of Brazosport, Texas, in the United States, has been involved with the clinic since Branson says the governor of Chihuahua credits the clinic with providing 60 percent of indigent care in the state. The drug wars in Mexico, which began in 2006, initially scared away U.S. volunteers. At one point, volunteers to Guerrero dipped to 20 volunteers from a high of 50. And in 2010, the clinic had to be canceled for six months after the U.S. State Department issued a travel ban to Mexico. Despite the cautious approach, Guerrero is not typically viewed to be as dangerous as some of the border towns in Chihuahua like Ciudad Juarez. "I tell [volunteers] we're not going to take them to an area where we know there's a problem. We don't take that chance," Branson says. It's taken not only the support of the community in Guerrero, but the cooperation of Rotary clubs in Southeast Texas and in northern Mexico to grow and sustain the clinic. The clinic opens its doors and offers free health care services as often as six times a year. Optometry is its primary focus with up to 550 cataract surgeries performed each year, but it also offers cleft palate surgeries, skin grafts, cancer screenings, and pap smears. As many as 1,000 patients come through the clinic each week it operates. Branson says people have been known to travel over 1,200 miles to be treated at the clinic, many because the services are free. He recalls one couple bringing their baby in to repair a cleft palate. "They traveled from Acapulco to Guerrero because they had no money to pay for the surgery," he says. 14 th July 2014 Page 8 of 12 Volume 49, Number 3
9 Funding gaps As the clinic has grown so has the cost to keep it running. To help with funding, several clubs in Mexico formed the nonprofit Rotary Foundation of Guerrero (Fundación Rotaria de Guerrero A.C.) in The foundation won loans through the federal health care program until loans were suspended in Celso Reyes, of the Rotary Club of Torreón, says that the clubs in both countries have had to renew their fundraising tactics to recoup lost funding. Additionally, they have applied for various Rotary grants throughout the years; most recently they secured a matching grant sponsored by several clubs in Mexico. The clinic also relies on non-rotary organizations such as Alcon Labs, a health and eye care company, for donations of medical supplies. "It's one thing to hear about the work being done," Reyes says. "But [only] until you visit, until you're actually there and you see the profound change made in the lives of the people who get their vision back or have a cleft palate surgery, do you see how wonderful it is. It is a great experience." 14 th July 2014 Page 9 of 12 Volume 49, Number 3
