1 ROTARY CLUB of CLAYTON Inc. Weekly Bulletin District 9810 Victoria, Australia Meets every Monday from 6:00pm at Clayton RSL 163 Carinish Road, Clayton (Melways 79D3) (No meeting on public holidays) 20th April 2009 In This Issue Volume 43, Number 36 Presidents Report Presidents Report Hello Team, Golf Day Sponsors How are you all? Club History Last Week & Upcoming Club Program District 9810 News Upcoming Events in Monash / Kingston Where other clubs meet Reminders Joke of the Week Rotary International News I was good to welcome back John Barnes to our Monday night meetings again. It has been a while since John has been to a regular meeting, so to welcome him back we gave him the best job in the club, the Sergeant. Like a true professional John is, he dealt with the job with no hiccups. I was also glad to see all the members back after their excursion to Hobart for the District Conference. I know I was inspired and hope so were all of you after hearing the fantastic report from Glenys Pattison on a first time attendee at the Bill Norling award presentation. I have asked Glenys to pass me a copy of her presentation as I would like to add it to our web page. During the week I had some feedback on the first meeting of the new Rotaract club which they are trying to start in the Monash area. The meeting was held on the 2nd April at the Village Green, but unfortunately only a few potential members attended. A positive from the meeting was that a brainstorming session was held and the team is currently trying to put some of these ideas in place. I have had a request from Kylie McMillan (DR) who is currently looking for venue ideas in the Monash area which are close to public transport. If you can help with some venue ideas please contact me direct and I will pass the information on. Also if you know of any potential Rotaractors between the ages of 18 30, please let me know. Members please do not forget about our Annual Charity Golf Day on the 4th May. If you can support with players, sponsors or being there on the day please contact either Bob Millen or Warren Fricke. Last of all I would like to wish the Rotary Club of Clayton a happy 44th Birthday which was on the 17th April. Page 1 of 9

We gave money towards Wheelchairs for Kids. We were involved in Toss the Coin and the Monash Community Raffles. We bought Christmas cards and puddings. We also sponsored a Christmas tree for the Monash Adolescent unit. We performed our Food bank runs to support Dixon house. Last Week & Upcoming Club Program Last Meeting (06/04): Our guest speaker was Julius Peiker who works for the City of Monash and is the Community Planning and Development Co-ordinator. Julius spoke about the Clayton Community Strengthening Project. With the construction of the new, multi-purpose, Clayton Community Centre, the Monash Council is keen to facilitate a three year placed based community strengthening project in Clayton and surrounding areas with the Clayton Community Centre as a focus. The Monash Council is seeking funding from the State Government Community Support Program. Monash Council wishes to enter into a partnership with stakeholders to develop the submission for funding and manage its implementation. The first stage was for the Council Officers to commission a consultant to develop a Demographic Profile for the catchment area of the Clayton Community Centre (copy of this document is with Michael & Bob). Upon taking receipt of the document a list of stakeholders were identified. These stakeholders were sent the demographic profile and a number of questions that were used as a basis for a conversation regarding the community in the catchment area and the potential detail and nature of the proposed project. Conversations were then held with all the stakeholders. Copies of the Stakeholders Consultations Summary of Issues were passed around during the meeting for the members. For further information you can contact Julius Peiker directly on or His is juliusp@monash.vic.gov.au We also had a report on the sandwiches (90 of them) which were made for the Sudanese Youth Trip 2009 from the 4 th to 6 th April to Rawson in the La Trobe Valley on behalf of SEAAC (see photo attached). The ages of the students were between years old. SEAAC is a community based organisation that seeks to enable young people from migrant and Page 4 of 9

Joke of the Week An 80-year-old man went to the doctor for a checkup and the doctor was amazed at what good shape the guy was in. The doctor asked, To what do you attribute your good health? The old timer said, I m a golfer and that s why I m in such good shape. I m up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. The doctor said, Well, I m sure that helps, but there s got to be more to it. How old was your father when he died? The old timer said, Who said my father s dead? The doctor said, You mean you re 80 years old and your father is still alive? How old is he? The old timer said, He s 100 years old and, in fact, he golfed with me this morning. That s why he s still alive, he s a golfer. The doctor said, Well, that s great, but I m sure there s more to it. How about your grandfather? How old was he when he died? Page 7 of 9
8 The old timer said, Who said my grandpa s dead? The doctor said, You mean you re 80 years old and your grandfather s still living! How old is he? The old timer said, He s 118 years old. The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too? The old timer said, No... Grandpa couldn t go this morning because he got married. The doctor said in amazement, Got married!! Why would a 118-year-old guy want to get married? The old timer shot back, Who said he wanted to? Rotary International News Rotary to build a hospital dedicated to mother and child care in Tanzania Contact: Howard Chang at or howard.chang@rotary.org Rotary International News -- 9 April 2009 Groundbreaking of medical center to take place in Kibaha on 15 April ( Dar Es Salaam, TANZANIA: 10 April, 2009 ) Rotary, one of the world's largest humanitarian service organizations, announced the launch of a new US $1 million mother and child care initiative that seeks to improve the quality of the medical services for women and children in Tanzania. The dedication of the Rotary Mother and Child Medical Complex and the Tumbi Hospital Renovation Project in Kibaha is scheduled for 11 am on 15 April. Attendees at the dedication ceremony will include Rotary International President Dong Kurn Lee, Regional Commissioner, Minister of Health, Regional Administrative Secretary, Regional Medical Officer, Kibaha Education Centre Executive Director, and Sir Andy Chande. Worldwide, an estimated 26,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria. "Once I understood the issues behind that terrible number, I made reducing childhood mortality my emphasis during my term as Page 8 of 9
9 president, said Rotary International President Lee. The new hospital dedicated to mother and child healthcare is expected to save up to 42 children per day. Lee sees this initiative as an essential step in reducing childhood mortality in Africa. The mother and child care initiative is focused in two areas: increasing the availability of preventive care, including drug treatments; and building a hospital system to reach as many women and children as possible with the care they need. Sang Koo Yun, a member of Sae Hanyang Rotary Club in Seoul Korea who spearheads the initiative, said that Rotary clubs in Korea had donated 500,000,000 Korean Won (approximately US$500,000) to support the initiative. The donation was matched by the Community Chest of Korea, which supports Rotary s commitment to childhood survival. The fact-finding team organized by Rotary was dispatched to Tanzania in November 2008, where they visited different medical facilities related to mother and child healthcare, and met with top health officials, hospital management, and local Rotary club members. Based on the team s recommendations, the Tumbi Hospital in Kibaha was selected as the site for the Rotary Mother and Child Hospital. The Tumbi Hospital is a part of the Kibaha Training Center, where health officers and nurses are trained. Since the existing mother and child healthcare facility at the hospital needs updating and refurbishment, new operating theater, delivery rooms, and an X-ray room are to be constructed, and also more modern equipment and furnishings are to be installed, said Yun. In addition, on-site training and education programs are to be implemented to improve the quality of the medical services and management, as well as public awareness programs to educate the residents about health and hygiene. Yun said, We hope the project will set an example for people who wish to engage in similar initiatives. More importantly, the project will enrich the lives of one million residents of Pwani region in Tanzania. And, ultimately, we hope to save up to 42 children a day. Rotary an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide in humanitarian service - has more than 1.2 million members in more than 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographic regions.
