Below are summaries of further examples of the work done by Rotarians for our future in Rotary Downunder/Humanity in Motion. The World would be a better place if more people went on Youth Exchange My life really began with my year on Youth Exchange. It s during a year a long way away from your family, friends and everything you ve ever know, that you claim your life. Exchange happens to people, between people and for people. Exchange is personal. And for me, the three main benefits are: openness, humility and an enduring curiosity about the world. Openness towards different people, practices and ideas reduces fear and expands our lives so they are about more than just ourselves. This expansion sharpens our internal compass, throws up interesting answers to existential questions of purpose and morality. It s healthy for everyone to spend a year being in the minority and having to start from scratch with something as fundamental language. Through these tests we develop humility and compassion. These are the ways exchange tweaks your character, leaves imprints that remain many years after the exchange is over. As a sixteen year old, I went to Germany on the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Sixteen years later, I m finishing my PhD at Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1998, I returned to Australia back to high school. In 2000, I began a degree at Sydney University. That December, I went to The Dominican Republic to visit my sponsor child. Then I returned to Germany for Christmas with one of my former host families. Three years in Europe and three in Asia followed. Brooke Nolan 25 th May 2015 Page 1 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38

2 Rotary Four Way Test "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" SCIENCE EXPERIENCE The ConocoPhillips Science Experience is a three/four day program f hands-on science activities, supported by Rotary and conducted in 35 universities and tertiary institutions around Australia. These programs are designed for students in Years 9 and 10, years in which they will make significant decisions about senior secondary and tertiary level studies. Our aim is to uniform students of the importance of Science, Technology and Engineering while stimulating and heightening their interests in a wide range of science disciplines and career opportunities. Encouraging further studies in the sciences, while at the same time giving them a taste of university/tertiary life. A typical program includes:- - Hands-on activities in tertiary labs - Information on further study and career options with exposure to the top people in their field at the University - Associating with budding young scientists to form lasting friendships - Excursion/Industry visit - Closing ceremony RYDA ROTARY S ROAD SAFETY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS PROGRAM In 2000, four teenage boys were killed as their car, driven by an inexperienced P plater, smashed into an innocent woman s vehicle. All four young men died, the woman was seriously injured, and horrified local Rotary Club members knew they had to act. The concerned Rotary Club members decided that something must be done to better prepare young people when they started to drive or became passengers in vehicles driven by their friends. This was the beginning of RYDA a Rotary Youth Drive Awareness community road safety initiative created to deliver practical road safety information targeting attitude and awareness of young drivers and passengers and designed to help stop the tragic loss of young people in road crashes. Thirteen years on, the RYDA road safety education program is a leading Rotary project, supported by hundreds of Rotarians in virtually all Rotary Districts throughout Australia and New Zealand The RYDA program offers practical and powerful workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety. In a one-day interactive event, students experience high-speed braking, devise travel strategies that will work for them in the real world and get tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. RYDA is designed for year old students who are approaching that crucial time in their lives where they start to drive independently or are travelling as passengers of novice drivers. Through the RYDA Program, Rotary is helping to make our roads a safer place not only for young people but also for all others in our community who share the roads with young drivers. Getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle as a young driver, or being a passenger with a novice driver, is said to be among the most dangerous things that a person will do in their life. Also a reminder for all board members to provide their 1 page 2014/2015 summary in the next couple of weeks Please do not forget our Changeover on the 29 th June at the Oakleigh RSL. Have a great week, Bron 25 th May 2015 Page 2 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38

For more information click here Nepal Earthquake Appeal Sha Rijal is a member of the Rotary Club of Clayton. Recently her country Nepal was struck by a massive 7.9 earthquake wrenching a terrible loss of life and leaving millions of survivors without proper shelter, food and water. Unfortunately, the relief efforts have been slow in the wake of this disaster. The situation gets worse as we move away from the capital, Kathmandu, to the villages and remote areas. Many villages are completely flattened. People are sleeping in the cold ground with no roof above their head onward to a nearing monsoon season. They are running out of food and many, including hungry children, may be left to starve. Their livestock have perished or been taken by wild animals. Clean water and sanitation is at a critical situation with the risk of an epidemic health crisis. 25 th May 2015 Page 4 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38

5 Hearing this makes her heart shiver and she feels extremely nervous for her country. Despite this, hope is in the air because of the limitless generosity of humanity. Sha is humbled at the inundation of goodwill from everyone who has shown a genuine compassion and offer to help. Therefore Sha and the rest of the members of the Rotary Club of Clayton would like to appeal to you all to support the cause in Nepal to fund local efforts to alleviate the suffering of those in villages. Please support the people of Nepal by providing funds towards this cause using direct credit to the following account:- Rotary Club of Clayton Nepal Earthquake Appeal Account. 7 Joke of the Week A photographer for a television station was assigned to get photographs of a large bushfire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he called his home office to hire a plane. It will be waiting for you at the airport, he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, country airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled: Let s go! Let s go! The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. Fly over the north side of the fire, said the photographer, and make three or four low passes. Why? asked the pilot. Because I m going to take pictures. I m a photographer and photographers take pictures, said the photographer with great exasperation. After a pause the pilot said: You mean you re not the instructor? Rotary International News Nursing school helps indigenous community survive in Uganda By Arnold R. Grahl Rotary News 2-APR-2015 A nurse immunizes a child at Bwindi Community Hospital in southwest Uganda. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Bwindi Community Hospital For thousands of years, the Batwa Pygmies lived among the silverback mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of southwest Uganda. But in 1992, the forest was declared a World Heritage Site to protect the endangered silverback, and the Batwa lost their home. Forced to transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers, they did not adapt well, and their very survival was threatened. Over the years, Rotary members in the United States, Uganda, and other parts of the world helped with efforts to aid the Batwa. Most recently, those efforts have focused on the creation of a nursing school to serve the entire southwestern part of the country. 25 th May 2015 Page 7 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38

8 Dr. Scott Kellermann, a physician and Rotary member from California, USA, discovered the plight of the Batwa in 2000, when he and his wife, Carol, traveled to the area as medical missionaries to assess the indigenous people's needs. He describes the situation they found: "Abject poverty. No access to health care, no access to education, no clean water, no sanitation, land insecurity, and food insecurity." The Kellermanns' survey found that 38 percent of the Batwa died before the age of five -- twice the rate of Uganda as a whole -- and that the average life expectancy was 28. Building a hospital Shortly after his first visit, Kellermann and his wife sold their possessions, including his medical practice, and moved to Uganda -- where they stayed fulltime until to help the Batwa. Starting with mobile clinics held under trees and with IVs hanging from branches, they treated "200, 300, sometimes 500 people a day," Kellermann recalls. Eventually, they launched a foundation and built Bwindi Community Hospital. Kellermann's Rotary connections helped to equip it. Projects supported by a series of Rotary Foundation grants and backed by members in Uganda, the United States, and other parts of the world provided an operating theater, a dental unit, generators, solar panels, and clean water and improved sanitation, and taught the Batwa how to raise small livestock to improve their nutrition. Now, the infant mortality rate is down to 6 percent, and the number of women dying in childbirth has declined 60 percent. "Rotary has been incredible," says Kellermann. "It doesn't just throw money at a problem. It goes through a local Rotary club so Rotarians on the ground come out to make sure the projects are successful. What Rotary did was look at the broader picture and say, hey, a hospital is great. But you need to prevent these diseases. You need to provide water and sanitation. You need to teach these women how to feed their kids." A project aimed at reducing the incidence of malaria distributed thousands of bed nets to families through tribal healers. "In 2006, we were losing one to two kids every week to malaria," Kellermann says. "After Rotary helped us distribute 25,000 bed nets, we went nine months without a kid dying from malaria. Rates have dropped over 90 percent." Creating a nursing school A few years ago, two entrepreneurs, James Jameson and Steve Wolf, met Kellermann while they were in the area to track gorilla. After they learned of the need for a nursing school, they contributed more than $650,000 to plan, design, and build it. The Uganda Nursing School Bwindi opened in November The pair also paid to send Jane Anyango, a registered nurse at the Bwindi hospital, to Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she earned a master's degree in nursing that enabled her to take over as the school's principal teaching tutor. And they provided ipads, loaded with a year's worth of textbooks, for every nursing student at the new school. Last year, Jerry Hall, a past Rotary International vice president, led a vocational training team of nursing educators who spent two weeks developing the school's curriculum, instruction, and administration. Hall had met Kellermann during a previous project, when Hall was a Rotary director, and he had become a strategic planning consultant for the hospital. Hall's club, the Rotary Club of Reno, Nevada, USA, along with Rotary members in Kihihi, Uganda, and 18 other clubs, raised $67,000 for a global grant totaling $247,000 that provided furnishings, classroom supplies, and lab equipment for the school. Hall says that after the vocational training team returned home, a team member affiliated with the University of San Francisco arranged for Anyango to have access to the university's trove of digital information. Another team member arranged to have flash drives loaded with nursing curriculum sent to the school. 25 th May 2015 Page 8 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38

9 "The technology they have at the school is the first of its kind in Uganda," says Hall. "The chair of the Uganda Nursing Council attended a grand opening celebration during our stay and was blown away by some of it. "The potential is tremendous," adds Hall. "Once we get trained nurses out to the villages and regional areas, you'll have people with midwifery skills who can deliver children out there safely and provide prenatal care. None of that is available today." 25 th May 2015 Page 9 of 13 Volume 49, Number 38
