I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all members to consider attending the District Conference which will be held in Bendigo, 21 st - 23 rd March next year. The first Conference that I attended was many years ago, but I have always retained the memory of the warmth and friendship I experienced at that time. I don t think I really understood the meaning of Rotary and it s relevance in my life until I attended my first Conference. Last week our guest speakers, Glenys and Cheryl, spoke about membership and reminded us that it is the responsibility of us all to actively seek new members and work to retain the ones we have. A questionnaire was circulated to ascertain how we felt about our membership and hopefully improve matters pertaining to our Club. I hope that you have all taken time to complete the questionnaire and will bring the completed forms with you tonight. Have a great week! Yours in Rotary, Heather. 2 nd September 2013 Page 1 of 13 Volume 48, Number 10
2 Rotary Four Way Test "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" Last Meeting & Notes Last Meeting (26 th August): This week our guest speakers were Glenys Pattison & Cheryl O Toole who are both members of the Rotary Club of Clayton and are looking after Membership this year in our club. Both Glenys & Cheryl presented information and targets which have been set by the Rotary District 9810 from the session they attended at the last District Assembly. The membership target has been set at 3% increase in Members over a 3 year period looking at funding available for promotions ($5000) with further ($10,000) with strings attached. $420,000 collectively would allow for Media placement, Brochures, Radio and TV Ads. Points raised for enhancing club image were:- Make sure Meeting times, days, times and phone numbers are easily accessible. Make sure meting times are suitable for everyone. Meet and greet all visitors. Plan room layout and comfort. Check Membership badges are up to date badge don t look years old in style and colour. Have appropriate speakers. Give prospective member and visitors a Visitor Pack and follow up new members. Meet and greet all visitors everyone to shake hands fined if don t. Make sure Speaker s gifts are appropriate. The visitor packs given could consist of a Rotary Folder which includes:- Rotary information. Club Brochure --- Could also be put in shops, cafes etc. Rotary Basics. Business Partners. Bulletin. Rotary Corporate Brochure. Membership Business card for contact. And also include location of information:- Club Website. Club Brochure. Local PR. Be strongly connected within your community. Be seen to receive credit for the work we do. Have friendship beyond club meetings. Other general points raised were:- Check Website making sure people can contact you with phone number and meeting details. Suggestion of old phone with $40 SIM card in it to be used to contact person, could be shared around. Have an Action Plan for a Membership drive Membership Committee, it is really a whole team job to gain and keep new members. Recognise industries we haven t got - carpet layers etc, set list and Get Started. Check businesses that have voluntary work goals for staff and talk about volunteering. Reward success for those who bring new members into the club ---- give free dinner. Ads in Leader Newspaper collectively. Pay Membership Fees for first year for younger members. First goal for New Year should be to bring in a New Member. Glenys and Cheryl then spoke about what targets and goals they have set up for our club to achieve. 2 nd September 2013 Page 2 of 13 Volume 48, Number 10

Joke of the Week A group of women were at a seminar on "How to live in a loving relationship with your husband." The women were asked, "How many of you love your husband?" All the women raised their hands. Then they were asked, "When was the last time you told your husband you loved him?" Some women answered today, some yesterday, some couldn't remember. The women were then told to take out their cell phones and text their husband: "I love you, sweetheart." The women were then told to exchange phones and to read aloud the text message responses. Here are some of the replies: 1. Who is this? 2. Eh, mother of my children, are you sick? 3. I love you too. 4. What now? Did you crash the car again? 5. I don't understand what you mean? 6. What did you do now? 7.?!? 8. Don't beat about the bush, just tell me how much you need? 9. Am I dreaming? 10. If you don't tell me who this message is actually for, someone will die. 11. I thought we agreed we would not drink during the day. 12. Your mother is coming to stay, isn't she?? 2 nd September 2013 Page 7 of 13 Volume 48, Number 10
8 Rotary International News Rotary approves $500,000 emergency grant for Somalia A child receives the oral polio vaccine during an immunization campaign. As of 14 August, 110 cases of wild poliovirus have been reported in the Horn of Africa. Photo Credit: Iman Morooka/UNICEF Rotary has approved a $500,000 Rapid Response grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) to address a recent polio outbreak in Somalia. The outbreak occurred in the Banadir region of Somalia, where a large number of children had not been vaccinated against polio due to inaccessibility. As of 14 August, 110 cases of wild poliovirus have been reported in the Horn of Africa 100 cases in Somalia and 10 in Kenya. This is the first outbreak in Somalia since 2007 and in Kenya since The Rotary grant will cover operational costs, including human resources, training, and transportation of health workers, aimed at immunizing children under 10 in all accessible areas of Somalia in August. To date, five vaccination campaigns have been held in Somalia, three in Kenya, two each in Ethiopia and Yemen, and one in Djibouti. Additional campaigns are planned through the end of the year. Drawing on lessons learned from previous polio outbreaks, the first vaccination campaign was carried out within a week after the first case was confirmed. Until polio transmission is interrupted in the endemic countries, outbreaks such as the one in Somalia are to be expected, says Dr. Hamid Jafari, director of Polio Research and Operations at WHO. So long as the budget for the new Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan is fully funded, we re well-equipped to pursue endemic and outbreak priorities simultaneously. Rotary s emergency funding for responses to polio outbreaks in Somalia and other countries has been critical to ensuring that immunization activities proceed without interruption, thereby minimizing the risk of the disease s further international spread. In addition, the governments of the United Kingdom and Japan recently announced financial commitments of $15.3 million and $1.3 million, respectively, to fund similar emergency vaccination campaigns in the Horn of Africa. 2 nd September 2013 Page 8 of 13 Volume 48, Number 10
9 The United Nations has warned that without further intervention, polio could quickly develop into an epidemic across East Africa and put countless lives at risk. The UK s assistance will allow WHO to immunize 6.1 million people most at risk from the disease in Somalia, northern Kenya, and other countries in the region. This new funding is in addition to a $457 million pledge to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in April. Japan s emergency grant will pay for more than 5 million doses of oral polio vaccine for supplementary immunization activities in November and December, expected to reach more than 2.8 million children under nd September 2013 Page 9 of 13 Volume 48, Number 10
