2 LGBTQ Services Below are some of the key research findings from Sanjay Kumar s report into improving provision of drug & alcohol treatment in the city for LGBTQ people. The LGBT population in Brighton & Hove numbers around 35,000. Use of club drugs & legal highs in the community is increasing. HIV infections are increasing. LGBT population (predominantly male) is not represented in treatment services. Most LGBT drug users from B&H will attend services in London such as Antidote, the Club Drug Clinic or 56 Dean Street, as they are unaware of local services. There is no promotion of services in community magazines e.g. G-Scene and there is a lack of online resources. There is only 1 specific LGBT & substance misuse worker for the whole of the city (Gary Smith, Pavilions). 7 Pathways to Health Pathways to Health has been running ear acupuncture clinics in Brighton & Hove since Many people successfully use ear acupuncture to give up or reduce their use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco and to manage the cravings associated with their withdrawal. Their services are available from the following sites: Tuesdays Time:10.30am to 12.30pm Venue: Mind, 51 New England Street, Brighton, BN1 4GQ Thursdays Time: 3.00pm to 5.00pm Venue: Pavilions Drug & Alcohol Service, 9 The Drive, Brighton, BN3 3JE Fridays Time: 5.00pm to 7.00pm Venue: Cornerstone Community Centre, Church Road, Hove, BN3 2FL Our ear acupuncture treatments are available on a drop-in basis. You will be in a room where other people are also being treated. The practitioner will take some basic information about you, and answer any questions you may have. You will then have five small, sterile, single-use needles inserted into each ear. As the needles are inserted, the practitioner will ask you to breathe slowly in and out. You may feel a slight tingling sensation, or you may feel nothing at all. Once the needles are there, it is very important to rest quietly and relax for 35 to 45 minutes in a comfortable and relaxed position with the feet on the floor and legs uncrossed. Afterwards the needles are removed and you are free to go. 7

15 THT - STI Testing Week Monday 29th of June - Sunday 4th of July Following the success of National HIV Testing Week, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) Brighton is leading on STI Testing Week Brighton has a high prevalence of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) with certain groups particularly affected including Men who have Sex With Men (MSM), Black Africans and young people. The aim of Brighton STI Testing Week is to encourage regular testing and to increase awareness of when to test, focusing on two common misconceptions regarding STIs: Bacterial STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis do not only infect the genitals but can live in the throat and rectum as well. STIs do not always display symptoms, so the only way to know for sure if you have an STI is to take a test. STI screening methods are quick and easy and use self-taken swabs and urine samples. THT hope Brighton STI Testing Week encourage uptake of the existing STI testing services currently available throughout the year, as well as increasing public knowledge on how to prevent onward transmission of STIs. THT will be working with a number of partners including Clinic M and The Brighton Sauna to provide pop-up STI screening clinics offering chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests at various community settings and venues across the city throughout the week, however the main testing site will be the THT office in central Brighton: Where: THT South, 61 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AE When: Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July:10am 8pm and Saturday 4th July Sunday 5th July: 10pm 4pm 15

18 DAWG Feedback We asked for your feedback on the DAWG, this is what you said: When I have attended DAWG meeting there is usually a good turn out, but I m not sure how many care co-ordinators there are in the audience? If we could move the location around the City including holding at The Drive or even Kings House, we are only down the road, that might help some key audience members to attend? It s good to have it on varying days so part-timers can all get a chance to attend. I think FMH is a good venue central so easily accessible. Perhaps you could alternate the timings have some in the afternoon? I like the agenda shortish talks from services are very informative and the roundrobin works well I think. The lunch is lovely but not everyone can stay for it perhaps you could do tea and coffee with nibbles at the start instead? Some CPD on changing behaviours would be good from my point of view. Having the round robin at the beginning of the meeting would mean that if people had to leave early they wouldn t miss the service updates. Perhaps slightly shorter meetings but more regular sessions, e.g. monthly, may mean there is less to squeeze in. Changing days and times to enable part time / shift staff to attend. Could benefit from seeing a Pavilions Service structure that also details locations, referral pathways, contact details etc. Seems to be some confusion about what services are being offered from where. NEXT DAWG: 15th July, 2pm-4pm at The Friends Meeting House, Ship Street Tea, coffee & biscuits served from 13:30 Please contact us with any suggestions for guest speakers / CPD sessions. 18
