1 JUNE 2018 THE PIEDMONT WOOD CARVERS CLUB THE PIEDMONT CARVER CARVING THROUGHOUT THE UPSTATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA Monthly Meeting & Carve In Saturday June 16th Join us on Saturday June 16th for our monthly meeting and carve in. Doors open at 8:45 and you may stay as long as you like. Come and enjoy a cup of coffee and share in a community of great people who are passionate about carving. There will be a short business session at 11:00. A drawing will be held for door prizes via a raffle. Tickets for the raffle are earned by wearing your name badge, club logo/shirt, having a carving for show and tell, by a donation of a completed Angel of Hope. You may also purchase a ticket for $1 each. Visitors are always welcome, bring a friend! Club Ed June mentoring session is with Dave Fisher. We will be carving an angel for the Angel of Hope outreach project. If you are interested in leading an informational carving session during a Wednesday Carve In or during a Saturday monthly meeting, please contact Richard Card at richcard@charter.net. 2 Page 2 Presidents Desk At the recent board meeting, Jim Hayes our membership chair, announced more new members, making our current membership at 103 carvers! Indeed, these are exciting times for the PWCC. Special thanks for all the members who give back to the club, by serving on committees, mentoring, teaching classes, show and tell, providing donations of snacks and wood etc. etc. etc. Attendance at Wednesday carve-ins has reached the attendance numbers of our monthly meetings. All good news. Bob Davison has reorganized the library resources. His efforts will make these valuable resources more available to members. Most will be surprised at the amount of information PWCC has to share. Thanks Bob for all your hard work! Also, you will notice that we have rearranged the club room to better utilize our space. This will allow more flexibility and provides space for two additional tables for carving. More room for more fun! The first night of the Mauldin Farmers Mark was an enormous success. The Market has a larger number of vendors, food trucks, live music and a cooler more comfortable climate than previous years. This resulted in a large public turnout. I think the staff at the Mauldin Culture Center have created a special new event for Mauldin. I expect the event will continue to grow, and PWCC is right in the middle of the action. I had such an enjoyable time. It was pleasurable to see our tent well-staffed with members, proud to share the art of wood carving and promoting the club. Carving, laughing and sharing. There was much interest demonstrated by the market visitors. Spreading carving arts: Gay Greer has been out promoting the club, which has resulting in Lila Gilmer being booked to teach soap carving to Girls scouts in Anderson and Spartanburg. Also, I will be introducing wood carving at First Baptist Church of Mauldin. They have a group interested in carving Angels of Hope. What is behind the curtain? Glad you asked, as a reminder, behind the curtain on the shelfs in the back of the room are carving cutouts for Christmas ornaments, etc. We are planning again this year to have Christmas trees as part of the Show Raffle. So, we need ornaments carved and donated for the tree(s). Drop a couple dollars in the donations jar to help fund the purchase of more wood. Thanks So, help yourself, and keep laughing and keep carving! Dave
3 Page 3 June Club Ed Angel of Hope Outreach Project & Update We will be carving Angels of Hope at our June 2018 monthly meeting. In our February 2017 monthly meeting we kicked-off the Angels of Hope project. And since then we have delivered 135 Angels of Hope. For experienced/intermediate carvers, this stylized angel is an opportunity to be creative and to experiment. This also, happens to be a perfect starter project for new carvers too. So, bring that friend who has always wanted to try carving. As part of our Show in November, we will be having a weekend long carving contest featuring Angel of Hope. Carving Participants will register and pick up their angel cutout at the membership table. The completed angels will be judged Sunday afternoon. The June meeting will be good practice run for the show carving contest as well as producing Angels of Hope for our charitable organizations. Thank you so much for your Angels of Hope Donation. We Thoroughly enjoy providing them to our families as they are and offer a beacon of hope during a very difficult time in their lives. Please know the work you do and gift you provide is so special. Arguably, many feel that it s the easiest of all styles to learn. Accomplishments: Each student will learn proper knife sharpening and holding techniques, and how to read grain direction. Using the included basswood Study Board, we ll carve two-sided (canoe-shaped) and threesided (triangle-shaped) chips. By the end of the first day, each student should be ready to move on to additional shapes as parts of larger patterns, borders, rosettes, and more. As time allows, students can choose to add more challenging forms of Chip Carving, including Free form designs such as: 1)leaves, flowers, animals, etc., along with 2)Grid work, and 3) Lettering. To incorporate these new skills into a single piece, each person will begin working the second day of the class on a 8 Square diamond shaped Ready-to-Carve Four Seasons Trivet. Other options will be available for anyone who prefers to carve another Ready-to-Carve piece.
