1 We S e r v e The Sandwich Lions Tale Visit Our Web Site at: March 2018 March 6, 2018 Hello Fellow Lions: On March 1st, the Sandwich Lions presented the Citizenship Award to Todd Latham at the annual Chamber of Commerce Association Dinner. The presentation went well with 175 in attendance at the dinner. Lion Ed Carter and Lion Beth Nelson made the presentation of the award. On April 6-8th District 1-J Convention will be held. Please consider attending at least the Saturday night dinner. If, you need a form, let Lion Ron Wigton or myself know. Maybe, we can all share a ride to the Naperville Marriott Hotel. On February 28th, the Sandwich Lions board meeting was held, we reviewed and voted for Diabetes Awareness - $500, Fighting Blindness - $500 and Truancy DeKalb County - $300. We, also, talked about summer work T-shirts and helping with new Christmas decorations. Our March dinner program will be Diabetes Awareness presented by Lion Dan DeWitt, Chairman and Mario Gumino, Executive Director Lions of Illinois Foundation also Fighting Blindness presented by Steve Sroka. Never look down on anyone unless you are helping them up. 2 February Dinner Meeting PDG Lion Ed Carter presented our first annual Citizenship Award to Todd Latham at our February dinner meeting. The February dinner meeting was spouse s night and the program was Arts on Fire an interactive board art. They provided the boards, custom stenciling, with many choices to choose from, and gave step by step instructions to personalized them. While Lion Kyle Wallis s (right) thoughts were on Valentine s Day, Donna Grommes s (center) thoughts were on greetings. Jenny Moebs s (left) thoughts were on Spring. Arts on Fire presented a fun program and these are only a couple of the great signs that were made. Thank You from Lion Sharon My sincere thanks to all my Lion friends who offered their condolences at the passing of my Dad, George VanPelt. Your kind thoughts, words, prayers, cards and memorials were very much appreciated. It is such a blessing to have such a caring Lions family. Lion Sharon

3 Lion Sharon s Shamrock Shoot Lion Sharon is planning a little competition for our March dinner meeting in order to raise funds for our club s District 1-J Auction Basket. Each year at the District Convention themed baskets donated by clubs in the district are auctioned off to help raise funds to defray the cost of the convention. This year the Sandwich Lions Club will present a Grilling Basket with a portable grill and various grilling Lion Sharon s Shamrock Shoot accessories. You can help defray the cost of our basket. Bring some extra money to the March dinner meeting (a free will donation will get you in on the fun!) and try your hand at the Shamrock Shoot. Of course, there will be a fabulous prize for the winner! Aluminum Can Collection In support of the Green Team, the Sandwich Lions Recycling Committee will be collecting aluminum cans at our Dinner Meetings. Lion Leo has volunteered to bring his truck and park it by the door, so you can deposit your cans on the way in. Lions can fulfill the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" environmental message by reducing landfill debris through reuse or recycling. Lions environmental efforts occur at Lions club, district and multiple district activities as well as in the homes of environmentallyconscious Lions. Secretary s Notes: Our District 1-J Convention will be held on April 6 th 8 th. Attached to the of our February Tail was a copy of the Convention registration form and a letter providing some information on the convention. This same information is included at the end of this same Tail. LIF Scrip cards are still available - Lion Nancy has a few scrip cards available. To make it easier for you, either Lion Nancy or myself can submit orders for these cards from LIF. Scrip is a program where you purchase gift cards at face value from a list of over 600 available cards. Our LIF makes a percent from the sale of each card, however, you get the face value of the card to use. This is not a program that is run during the holidays but is an ongoing program that continues to grow. If you need an updated list of available cards, I can you a copy of the current listing. New Board Members - for Lions year will be voted on during our March dinner meeting. Nominations for these positions were made during the February dinner meeting, along with a vote of the Club membership which approved the upcoming board as listed. Lion Pete has additional books available. Sweepstakes sales from this Lions of Illinois Foundation (LIF) fund raiser help to support the 13 activities and services of our Foundation. These services include the hearing and eye screening buses, Camp Lions, and the other LIF programs and services. If needed, the Sandwich Lions can retain money for use in our sight and hearing programs. Hopefully, each member will sell at least two books and help support these programs. If a Lion completes the back of the Sweepstakes tickets they sell and one of those tickets is a winner, they will also be a winner. See either Lion Pete or myself if you do not understand or would like additional information. Pressure sensitive labels are allowed in completing address information. LIEF Sustaining Supporter program - The Sandwich Lions Club will match (in your name) your 1 st Sustaining Supporter donation of the current Lions year. If you have not made your donation this year, since July 2017, please attempt to do it in the next month or so, that way you can get the match for this Lions year. Send your donation to Lion Rita, she will forward your check and the matching Sandwich donation. Our drawdown raffle - will be at the Fox Valley Older Adults center on Friday night, April 27 th. The drawdown starts at approximately 6:30, with dinner starting sometime between 7 and 7:15. Money from this drawdown, silent auction, and dinner provide the required funds for the two (2) scholarships the Lions present to a pair of graduating Sandwich seniors at awards night later in May. Lion Leo will have tickets at our March dinner meeting with an update on the project. If you are not present at the meeting, contact Lion Leo for tickets. Tickets are $30 each and include the cost of the meal. Tootsie Pop Day s - will be Friday May 4 th and Saturday the 5 th. If interested in assisting with this project, talk to Club Chair Lion Sharon. This project assists both the hearing and vision programs of our Club and the programs and services of our LIF. Candy for LIF Tootsie Pop Day s has not changed. Are you a LIEF Sustaining Supporter - allows a Sandwich Lions member to make a $25 donation(s) to our Lions of Illinois Endowment (LIEF) Fund program where only the interest earned may be used. You do not have to be a Lion to donate to the LIEF Endowment fund, but only Sandwich Lions will receive the matching amount. For those Lions that do not have a sustaining supporter pin, I have sustaining support applications and pins. Membership is - the life of any type of organization whether it is a service organization such as our Lions Club, a church group, or any other social organization. Our current Lions year is the end of June and there is still time to bring in a new member or two. Each of you must know someone that could make a good Lion and as you are aware they must be asked as most individuals will not seek out membership in organizations. Our membership is currently 52 members and it would certainly make our projects much easier if we could get that number into the middle 50s. If you feel someone would be a good Lion, bring them to our next Club meeting as a guest or better yet also have them help at our next project. Another though would be to invite a former Club member, they may now have the time and they may now be willing to come back - approach them and ask. For better communications - if you have changed your , please give it to me. On a monthly basis, we receive both the District 1-J Journal and the Illinois State Magazine; the Lions of Illinois Foundations Share is now printed semi-monthly, and occasionally we receive something that might be of interest to Club members. If you do not wish to receive these publications when available, please let me know. Normally, there is nothing else. If you do not receive the Lions International magazine in the mail, please let me know.

5 Record Maintenance - is ongoing problem. If you have a change of address, phone number(s) address - let me know. I will pass this information to those that need it and update the appropriate records. For our printed roster there is a field labeled spouse. If you want multiple phone numbers listed on our roster or call list, give me the phone numbers and which one you prefer to be contacted on. If something has happened to your roster, I can send you another copy; however, it will not be fancy, and you must print it. If you only need a new phone list, that is only a single page. Used eye glasses, keys, hearing aids, and old Christmas lights - are part of the items that we collect for our LIF. If you have any of the above, please bring them to either our March or April dinner meeting. They will go into our next load of used items going to our LIF.
