2 Welcome to Whale tale 7. At our last meeting on September 5 we had a very interesting talk form 2 members of the South Coast Environment Centre who told us of the Raptor Kingdom and how they are caring for these birds in our community. David Irvine and Gayl Males told us of the various birds in this group and also had a masked owl which sat on David s Arm all the way through the talk. The highlight for many of the guests and Rotarians was to be able to pat the owl and for one or two of those present they were allowed to have it sit on their arm. David Irvine and Gayle Males with the Masked Owl. At the beginning of the meeting we heard from Malcolm Haythorpe who told the members of his Rotary Experiences over the years. This section is to help new members get to know about those members who have been in the Club for a few years. We had a number of other guests that night at the Yacht Club, David and Amy Parker ( brother of Ron), past member Andrew Jeffery, Graham Moody and Keith, Alison Kings partner. As September is Childhood Cancer Support month there have been functions to help the public understand the needs of the Childhood Cancer suffers. As part of this months celebrations members of the Childhood Cancer Association were invited to attend a reception at Government House. # of our members were included In this reception, Mark Cox, Brian Liddy and David Elliott. 4 Last Friday I attended the Opening of the Victor Harbor Men s Shed, a project that the Club gave a donation to enable them to get a grant from the Federal Government, This was well attended by members of the Men Shed and visiting dignitaries. Among those present were Rebekah Sharkie, Member for Mayo, Georgina Downer, Liberal candidate for the next election, Graham Philp, Mayor of Victor Harbor, David Basham, member for Finniss, Susan Doughty, minister of Adare Uniting Church. Dennis Williams, President of the Men s Shed plus many local citizens. After hearing of how the Men s Shed came about Susan Doughty declared the Victor Harbor Men s Shed open and the very elaborate cake was cut. This is a major step forward in the provision of a meeting place for young and old men to gather and enjoy working together on projects of a community nature or of their own project. Dennis Williams addressing the gathering On Wednesday night the Naming Rights dinner for the 2019 Art Show was held at the Grosvenor Hotel with approx. 80 Sponsors and guests present. The Naming Rights for the 2019 Art Show went to South Coast Sand and Civil a local business run by Steve Fladrich. Steve has been a sponsor for many years. (Photo next page.)

Rock and Roll Festival: After a wet and windy start the festival continued in sunshine on Sunday morning. 6 $ Rider entry fee The route: Thursday 28 th March, Victor Harbor to Hahndorf 74km Friday 29 th March, Hahndorf to Nuriootpa 84km Saturday 30 th March, Nuriootpa to Burra 114km Sunday 31 st March Programmed rest day Monday 1 st April, Burra to Terowie 68km Tuesday 2 nd April, Terowie to Yunta 101km Wednesday 3 rd April, Yunta to Olary 77km Thursday 4 th April, Olary to Broken Hill 118km We encourage youth, women and men to join us on this exciting adventure. Any cyclist wishing to participate will need a minimum standard of 24km per hour solo on a flat road for a minimum of 2 hours. Every day will be split into 2 sessions. Starting time and duration between breaks will be advised before each day s ride. At least one support vehicle will be on the road for the duration of the event thanks to the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor. All sponsors will be recognised on signage displayed on support vehicles and trailers for the duration of the event. Safety will be of paramount importance. All cyclists are to adhere to a code of conduct that will be required to be followed during the event. Non Rotarians are welcome if you support our cause. If you are coming to the conference, why not bring a bike or e-bike and roll in to Broken Hill with us in support of this great cause. Alternatively, feel free to walk the last section with us into town. Looking forward to your participation. 7 CONFERENCE BICYCLE RIDE FROM THE OCEAN TO THE OUTBACK 28 th March to 4 th April, kilometres from Victor Harbor to Broken Hill 7 days riding 1 rest day Avg 90km per day The Rotary Club of Victor Harbor is proud to organise this exciting event to raise funds for research into mental health. We will be cycling from Victor Harbor to Broken Hill arriving in time for the last Rotary District 9520 Conference The ride has even more significance now that our drought affected rural friends and families are struggling through such a difficult time. It is not only farmers who need our help here, but entire communities. All funds raised will go to Australian Rotary Health (ARH) and every dollar raised goes directly into Mental Health Research which has been ARH s main area of focus since ARH was established in 1981 and has contributed over $40 million into health research In Australia, by Australians, for Australians. "I commend the Rotary Club of Victor Harbor for this wonderful initiative which will not only raise much needed funds for research into mental health through our own Australian Rotary Health, one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia, but will increase awareness of mental health issues within rural communities. This bike ride - from the ocean to the outback - is a great example of Rotarians as People of Action!" So I gave him a glass of water.
