3 INTERVIEWS AND SUPPORT Staff at Sunflower House are often asked, Isn t it hard to work each day around such heartbreaking stories and circumstances? How do you do it? The answer is simple. Each day, we simply focus on the good being done rather than on the struggle of those we help, says Cindy Riddel, Director of Child Assessment. Instead of only hearing their tragic stories of abuse, we soak in their smiles and honor the connection being made and the courage it takes for each child to tell his or her story. We listen and then we help. In the first six months for 2016, 228 children came through our doors from Johnson and Wyandotte Counties for forensic interviews, advocacy and support. THERAPY From the beginning of my time as leader of Sunflower House it has been my VISION to see each and every child that comes to us following their report of abuse begin their healing process by immediately accessing the mental health therapy that is necessary to heal the effects of the trauma they have endured. Reality was, though, that despite the best attempts of our staff to recommend this therapy and to provide a referral list of qualified therapists in the area, many of the families did not follow-through, recalls Michelle Herman, President and CEO. One of the most heart-warming things for me personally is seeing even more children in our lobby now who are waiting to see their therapist, and knowing that for most of them, healing has already begun! Over the last four years, Sunflower House developed a solid collaboration with PACES, a reputable children s mental health agency in Wyandotte County. Today we contract with three of PACES therapists dedicated solely to working with children and their families seen at Sunflower House. This collaboration has greatly increased the number of children that are seeking out therapy services at Sunflower House -- from 9 in 2012 to a projected 215 in 2016! PREVENTION EDUCATION In addition to the incredible intervention and child assessment programs offered to child abuse victims who come through the doors of Sunflower House, the organization s powerful community education services provide information and tools needed to help stop the cycle of abuse. At Sunflower House, prevention through education is a priority offered to both children and adults. In 2016, more than 170 schools received such empowering education programs as Happy Bear, Think First and Stay Safe, E-Safety online education program, and Abusive Head Trauma. In an engaging and non-threatening environment, children ages three to 18 learned how to resist and report abuse to an adult. In the first six months of 2016, after participating in a Sunflower House education program, 98 percent of the more than 9,185 children reached stated they could recognize welcome and unwelcome touch and also indicated they would tell a trusted adult if they were approached with unwelcome touch even if they were told to keep it a secret.
