v From the Director s Desk- Most of our lives we search for happiness, but what we really need is purpose. When your life has purpose and meaning you have true happiness. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, or to creating something that you are passionate about that gives you purpose. Recently one of our caregivers, Marilyn Pinkerman, has found passion, a purpose she has been happier, brighter, and filled with new ideas and connections that have simply been a joy to see. A huge thank you to Marilyn, Barbara Lyn and Kevin Fogg for lighting up our building. May you all find purpose this season with the help of a purple light. Happy New Year! Dale Become a Friend of the Club Many funding sources, state, federal and insurance-based, have disappeared in the last 3 years causing us to tighten our budgets, and reduce scholarships to those that are the neediest. Won't you help support "The Club?" These funds will be used to enhance one of our three day room facilities with furniture or repairs, entertainment, arts, crafts, Ice cream social, pizza party, prom party, holiday celebration, newspaper subscriptions and other needed supplies. Visionary $5,000 - Four t-shirts, team entry in golf tournament or cycle, $1,000 in car tickets, Two dinner tickets Heels & Wheels Champion $1,000 - Four t-shirts, team entry in golf tournament or cycle event, $500 in car tickets Leader $500 - Four Club t-shirts and team entry in golf tournament or cycle event Hero $250 - Club t-shirt and single entry in golf tournament or cycle event Friend $100 - Annual Club t-shirt Please call us at if you would like to become a Friend of The Club!
Volunteers Needed! We are looking for volunteers to work a concession-type fundraising event scheduled for Sunday, February 26th, This will be an all day event. If you are interested in volunteering your time to raise money for The Club, please call us at Volunteer Spotlight We would like to introduce you to Debbie Brown who has written a brief story of how she came to volunteer for us: At one point in my mother s life she needed to be placed in a nursing home that was close to my family. Sam was the Activity Director. He would visit her daily and the two got along very well. They always made each other laugh which in turn made her stay more enjoyable. On the 4 th of July, Sam was setting off fireworks for the residents and I asked him to wait until I got to the parking lot before he set them off. No sooner did my foot hit the edge of the parking lot, Sam set off some fire crackers and I jumped several times. Sam and my mother laughed and laughed and I haven t seen my mother laugh like that in a long time. Shortly thereafter, I began volunteering in the activity department and Sam and I became good friends. When Sam accepted the position at the BAFI Club in Melbourne, after my mother s passing, I offered my volunteer services at the Melbourne location. I volunteer each Monday and Friday calling Bingo along with making crafts with the clients on Friday mornings. I haven t been retired for very long, although, volunteering my time has become fulfilling and rewarding. I am very thankful for the opportunity and the knowledge I ve obtained about the Alzheimer Foundation. Sam makes all the clients feel loved and important about themselves which makes me feel important for what I have to offer.

Federal Tax Credit for Elderly Dependent Care The Child and Dependent Care Credit is also referred to as the Elderly Dependent Care Credit or the Aging Parent Tax Credit. It is a tax credit for expenses an individual or family incurs for the care of a dependent (or other qualified relative) so that the taxpayer(s) are free to work or actively search for a job. Home care or adult day care costs are examples or expenses that are eligible for this credit. The fees associated with care provided in skilled nursing facilities or at assisted living residences are not considered eligible. This is because individuals in this type of care reside there full time and the intended purpose of care is not to free the individual to be able to work. Qualifying Age Requirements there are no age restrictions for the tax filer or those individuals who are unable to care for themselves, due to physical or mental issues. Disabilities/Health Requirements the person in need of care must be physically or mentally unable to care for him/her self. Persons who cannot dress, clean, or feed themselves, and those requiring constant attention to prevent injury, are considered unable to care for themselves. A diagnosis of Alzheimer s or dementia does not automatically make one eligible but most individuals with these conditions will meet this requirement. Family Status it is not necessary for the person requiring care to be related to the primary tax filer. However, the qualifying person must reside with the tax filer for at least half of the year. Financial (for the Tax Filer) - the individual filing taxes must have earned income for the year and must pay at least half the support for the qualifying person. Financial (for the dependent or Qualified Person) - the dependent s gross income cannot exceed $3,999. However, to be eligible for this tax credit, a person requiring care does not have to be a dependent. It is only required that the person cannot care for him/her self, and that he/she live with the tax filer for more than half of the year. Other expenses must be for the care of the qualifying person in order to enable the tax filer to work. The name and social security number of the qualifying person, and the name, address, and tax ID number of the care provider must be provided with the tax return. As this is just a portion of the of the information involved with this particular tax credit, and we are not tax professionals, please consult your personal tax professional to see if you might qualify. 7 Micco Center As you can see by the photos, we all enjoyed Santa's visit! The holidays are always hard for everyone due to the extra shopping, preparing, and time involved. So, start the New Year with a fresh start! As the caregiver you need to find time for yourself and not feel guilty about it. Let the staff care for your loved one so you can regenerate, and just think and do for yourself for a few hours. The Club is the BEST solution. Your loved one receives socialization, stimulation, motivation, and you receive a peace of mind. You will be a different person, and you will see a different person in your loved one. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Project R.E.L.I.E.F. Thank you to the Satellite High School Cheerleader's who donated for Senior Santa Program this December One of the SHS Cheerleaders, Rachel LaFrance, is also a Project RELIEF Volunteer who has sat with clients this past year. Rachel organized this drive with the whole team and brought several bags of donated items for Senior Santa, where the Nursing Home clients receive needed items like soaps, perfumes, lotions, slippers, and books for Christmas. Caregiver Training Series Caregiver Education & Resource Program -Series of six free classes. Each class focuses on a different caregiver issue. February 7, 10, 14, 17, 20 and 24, 2017 Tuesdays and Fridays, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. To register or for more information, please contact Barbara Borman, RN at ext or caregiving@hospiceofstfrancis.com
Melbourne Center This last year was filled with joy, laughter and a multitude of musical entertainment. We end December with days of warmth and excitement from our clients and all the love they give back to us. Our goal at BAFI is to provide care, enjoyment and on-going activities throughout each day. This is insurmountable compared to what they offer us, for the love and laughter they share with us makes what we do, from our hearts, a reminder of all we have to be thankful for. All the little blessings we receive in life, from our clients on a daily basis, makes all our own personal trials and tribulations easier to handle and not as big as others may face throughout each day. This last month was packed full of entertainers, schools, carolers, a holiday performance from The Tappers, two puppet shows, three new professional singers (Anna,David & Angela), many donations from our surrounding community business, caregivers and quilters, just to name a few! We ended the year with a Holiday Party for our clients with a visit from Santa bearing gifts and a Two Years Eve Party at each Club. Titusville Center On December 14, the club held a Mrs. Claus Cookie Decorating Workshop. This was an opportunity for caregivers to come and participate with their love ones and decorate cookies while listening to the holiday sounds of our very own Doug the van driver. The biggest bonus is that they were able to eat their treats. On December 23, the club enjoyed a Holiday Celebration. Santa Claus visited our club and spread Christmas magic and joy to our club members. Then, on December 30, our annual Two Years Eve party was held. The clients enjoyed themselves and were able to celebrate the New Year safely and in style. On January 25 th, 2017, the club will be holding a Winter Wonderland. This event will feature a Snowflake Ball, in which a king and queen will be crowned. This gives the members an opportunity to dress to impress. The clients will also be able to construct crafts such as penguins and snow owls. Refreshments will be served as well. The Titusville Club is always looking for new club members who would benefit from a day of activity, socialization, and fun. Please feel free to either call or stop by 830 South Park Avenue, Titusville to take a tour. Please do not wait for the crisis to happen.
On December 10, 2016, The Rotary Club of Suntree hosted their annual Rotary Cares Day. This event was at our Melbourne location and brought caregivers and club members together for breakfast. After breakfast, the caregivers were excused and the club members were treated to activities, musical performances, and a visit from Santa Claus himself! This event was free to everyone who attended. The Brevard Alzheimer s Foundation thanks the Rotary Club of Suntree for their continued generosity toward our members and caregivers.
