Tahoe Nevada AAUW Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Volume 23, Number 03 Message from the President As Thanksgiving approaches, it is time to reflect on the gifts that we have received. This year, I am especially thankful for the gift of our AAUW Tahoe Nevada Branch. I am so amazed at the talent and energy that abounds in our group of women. I thank all of you for the time and effort you put in to supporting education and equity for women and girls in our community. It was wonderful to see so many of you at our October meeting. Our speaker, Kristin Nelson, was not only interesting but also inspirational! This month s speaker is Carla Higginbotham, Esq. US District Attorney. Carla will be speaking about Human Sex Trafficking. This is an especially important topic, not only internationally but also affecting young girls right here in Nevada. Let s find out what we can do to help! Speaking of Thanksgiving and helping out; remember to bring canned goods for Project MANA to the meeting on November 20. Look for a list of preferred goods elsewhere in this newsletter. More on donations: You may have noticed that the price of our dinner now includes the beverages. The price does not quite cover the cost of the beverages served. If you would like to donate some beverages, please drop off your donations at Jan Horan s home on the Friday or Monday prior to the meeting on any month. For example, this month that would be Friday, November 15 or Monday, November 18. Jan says to just leave on her front porch! Finally, remember, if you haven t renewed your membership to please do. It is very convenient to do so online! Happy Thanksgiving, Stephanie AAUW November 2013 Newsletter Page 1

Outdoor Enthusiasts Lynn Whetstone Used Book Sales We are still having our used book sales at each dinner meeting. Lynn Flagg and Sherie Schmauder are in charge. Donations of books are welcome! Visit them at our November meeting to pick up some great fall and winter entertainment in the form of some well priced books!!!! The Outdoor Enthusiasts' Group gets together year round to enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, other outdoor activities (and good companionship!) in the beautiful Lake Tahoe area. We're currently into our fall hiking season and enjoying some snowshoeing as the weather changes. Stay tuned for s each weekend to determine what is best based on the weather report. We meet at 9:30 AM every Monday s in the lower parking lot of the Village Church at the Mt. Rose Hwy. on McCourry Blvd.; from November 20, 2013 Dinner Meeting Menu Turkey pot pastry pies Wild rice almandine Green bean fall casserole Baked pumpkin soup Full holiday salad bar Pumpkin cookie cups there we carpool to our hiking/ snowshoeing location. Please contact Lynn Whetstone at Lwhetstone@prodigy.net or if you would like to participate and be notified of upcoming hikes by . During the warmer months, there is also a group that kayaks from Ski/Hermit Beach in Incline Village at 9 AM most Wednesday mornings. It may not be too late to join the kayakers for an outing this season, although we re finding that kayaking is a lot more affected by the weather than hiking. The group is led by Liz Paganelli, who can be contacted at Lpag007@aol.com. Enjoy some of the fantastic photos of recent activities provided by Millie Clarke. AAUW November 2013 Newsletter Page 2

Book Group Diane Finegan The AAUW Book Group will meet on Monday, November 11. We will be discussing "City of Women" by David Gillham. A fascinating novel that takes place in Berlin during1943. Judy Drake and Jan Horan are our hosts for the evening. For more information about the Book Group please contact Diane Finegan at djrfinegan@earthlink.net or Membership Matters Kelly Neville and Barbara Pulver Please remember to renew your membership if you have not already done so for the fiscal year! If you are renewing you may use the online renewal at AAUW.org. (Call Susan Riggs or Kelly Neville if you have questions about this easy process). If you are a NEW member or wish to send a check please print and complete appropriate forms at the end of this newsletter and mail your check to the AAUW Nevada Tahoe. Our menu for November 20, will be a Thanksgiving Dinner provided by Crosby's. The cost is $ Mark your calendars now so you don't miss the delicious meal and the rekindling of your friendships. Public Policy Joanie Nygren Do You Know Your Rights? What would you do if you faced discrimination or harassment? Legal advocacy begins with workers and students who know their rights in the workplace and on campus. The LAF section of the AAUW website offers a wealth of easy-to-understand information about your legal rights. Explore our new LAF Employee Rights and Information Center through the Know Your Rights at Work resource page, and learn about the laws that govern your rights in the workplace. Go to Know Your Rights on Campus to learn about your rights as a student, student athlete, or faculty member. You can also find information about the process of filing a discrimination complaint and where to go for legal assistance. AAUW members can be the first line of defense to protect workers and students from discrimination. As parents, friends, co-workers, and teachers, we can educate others about their rights, their responsibilities, and the ways LAF can help. Know your rights! Please remember this month s dinner meeting at: Parasol Building, 948 Incline Way, 1st Floor Wednesday, November 20, 2013, $30.00 per person Please RSVP by Calling Barbe Pulver at (989) or her at smpulver@aol.com by Monday, November 18, AAUW November 2013 Newsletter Page 3

Tahoe Nevada AAUW Board President Stephanie Petrossi President-Elect Erika Gillette Past President Millie Clarke Treasurer Susan Riggs Secretary Dianne Lange VP Program Rebecca Gelber VP Program Haley Abel VP Membership Kelly Neville VP Membership Barbara Pulver Public Policy Joanie Nygren Newsletter Deborah Nicholas Directory Lucy Roman Website Suzanne Webb Scholarship Suzanne Webb Parliamentarian Connie Skidmore Programs by Rebecca Gelber and Haley Abel This November we are fortunate to have speaker Carla Higginbotham, Assistant US Attorney in Reno addressing us on Human Sex Trafficking. Ms.Higginbotham specializes in prosecuting juvenile sex trafficking cases, many involving children as young as 11 who are either culled from Nevada residents or transported into Reno from other states for the express purpose of being forced, often through violence, to sell their bodies for others' profit. Unfortunately, these profits come at less risk to the exploiters as penalties for selling humans are less than those for dealing drugs. Recent laws have been changed to address these crimes, but our speaker will help inform us of where things remain with this problem and where we have to go from here. November Collaboration with Project MANA For our annual collaboration with fellow Parasol member organization Project MANA we will be collecting non perishable food items for their distribution to clients here in Incline Village and throughout the North Tahoe Region. We will have a collection barrel at the door at our November 20th meeting. Please see the list of most needed items below: We accept unopened and unexpired food only. What to Donate: Nutritious, non-perishable foods! Listed below are the most needed foods. Canned meals: stews, soups, ravioli/ spaghetti/lasagna Canned protein products: peanut butter, tuna, salmon, chicken, beans Grains: cereal, oatmeal, rice, pasta Fruits: canned fruit, fruit cups, dried fruit, applesauce, juice Canned Vegetables Shelf Stable Milk or milk substitutes AAUW November 2013 Newsletter Page 4

VOLLEYBALL LINE JUDGING AT IHS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AAUW has been operating this program for many years to help girls sports. We would like to continue and are in need of new volunteers. The volleyball games are played during September and October. Most matches are played on Tuesday or Friday (4:45 to approximately 7:30) and sometimes on Saturday (11:45 to approximately 2:30). Two line judges are needed for each set of matches. There are usually from 8 to 12 home games in the season. We only judge home games. So if you would like to spend a few evenings around young enthusiastic girls who are grateful for your help please let me know. We will need one person to be a contact with the High School and to judge and if we could find 12 volunteer judges that would be great. Contact me at marg@775.net or I will have information sheets for and/or we can spend some time together going over what happens and how it works. Thanks in advance for your help.
