1 Tahoe Nevada AAUW Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Volume 25, Number 4 December 2015 President s Message Happy Birthday to Tahoe Nevada AAUW honoring the 45 th year since our chapter was founded. We recently received a letter and certificate from the National AAUW office in Washington, D.C. commemorating our 45 th anniversary. We appreciate our founders and all the members over the years who have contributed to create an organization which is sustainable, collegial and a contributor to our community. Please join us on Wednesday, December 9, for our annual holiday dinner at the Parasol Building. A delicious prime rib dinner and wine will be prepared by Crosby s. Our entertainment will be provided by the talented elementary school musicians from Lake Tahoe School. Please arrive at 5:30 for networking; the entertainment will begin at 6:00pm with dinner following. Dress is festive holiday, and bring your significant other. Our inaugural Holiday Art Faire is upcoming on Saturday, December 5 in partnership with the Incline High School Boosters. The event will be held from 10am to 4pm. Please contact Debbie Nicholas or me if you have a holiday tree decoration to donate for the AAUW holiday booth. You can drop off at Debbie s or my home, or I will pick up. If you can volunteer at the event, please contact Debbie Nicholas at nicholas89451@gmail.com The Tahoe Nevada AAUW Directories are ready for pickup. Many thanks to Millie Szerman who has compiled our directory of members with pictures, list of officers, activities leaders and bylaws. Directories will be available at the December and January meeting. Tahoe Nevada AAUW is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Foundation, and we welcome your direct donations. Sandra Cloninger, our treasurer, accepts donations throughout the year. If you have questions or ideas for activities, speakers or fund raisers, please contact me at charcurtisedd@aol.com or by phone or cell Thanks for your participation! Happy Holidays and have a joyful 2016! Cheers, Charlotte AAUW Dec 2015 Newsletter Page 1

2 MONTHLY MEETINGS Jennifer Tynes & Dianne De Cuir (Dinner meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month, September through May with the exception of December when we meet on the second Wednesday. Social hour begins at 5:30.Dinner will be served at 6:15 followed by the speaker at 7:15.) Our annual holiday meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 9 Here s your opportunity to invite your spouse or significant other to a festive evening including a prime rib dinner. Once again the music students from Lake Tahoe School will be our featured entertainment. These children were such a hit last year, you don t want to miss it. As usual, our social hour will begin at 5:30. We have scheduled the performance for 6:15. So don t be late. Crosby s delicious dinner will be served afterwards at 6:45. Remember, this year our branch has made a generous $500 donation to the Read with Me program at Incline Elementary School. The goal is to gift each student at the school with four new books at his/ her appropriate reading level, so we will not collect children s books at the dinner. In addition, the Parasol Foundation will match our funds with $1 for every $2 we donate. So, dust off your best bib and tucker, and come celebrate the season with your friends in AAUW. Reservations must be made by Mon. 12/7. Contact Kelley Werner kwwerner10@gmail.com Please be aware that TN-AAUW must pay for all RSVP dinners. Our longstanding policy has been that if you have made a reservation for a dinner meeting and fail to cancel by 5PM on the Monday before the dinner, you will be expected to pay for the dinner. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any comments or concerns about our meetings, please contact the Program VPs or President to resolve your issue. 3 OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS' GROUP The Outdoor Enthusiasts' Group gets together year round to enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, other activities (and good companionship!) in the beautiful Lake Tahoe area. We are currently snowshoeing and meet at 9:30 AM every Monday (weather permitting) in the lower parking lot of the Village Church on McCourry Blvd. at the Mt. Rose Hwy.; from there we carpool to our location. Please contact me, Lynn Whetstone, at or if you would like to participate and be notified of upcoming hikes/ snowshoe outings by . Additionally, there may be some cross country ski outings this winter--please let Lynn know if you would be interested in those, as well. Also, Nancy Larson is organizing a downhill ski group which will go out on Thursdays (snowfall permitting) to various local resorts. Please contact her at nancylarson614@gmail.com to be added to that list. During the warmer months, there are also kayaking and road biking groups. Both groups have ceased their activities for this season. We hope you will join us for one or more of the wonderful variety of outdoor activities which Tahoe has to offer! 9 Five Women Who Belong On The $10 Bill Pamela Miller, AAUU Public Policy To commemorate 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment, the U.S. Treasury has announced it will put a woman on the $10 bill in The Treasury called on Americans to submit their proposals for the redesigned $10, inspiring a wide discussion about the role of women in U.S. history. On October 9, AAUW members and staff were invited to meet with U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios to discuss the results of the poll and key initiatives beyond the $10 bill, including diversity, equal pay, and the underrepresentation of women in leadership. Barbara McClintock, Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Barbara McClintock, a pioneer in genetics, became the first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in While she was acknowledged in the scientific community, her major findings were largely ignored or dismissed until much later, despite their profound implications. AAUW was one of the first national organizations to recognize her importance, honoring her in 1947 with an AAUW Achievement Award. If selected for the $10 bill, McClintock would spark an important dialogue around women s struggle to be recognized by their peers in male-dominated fields. Eleanor Roosevelt, global activist and first lady Runner-up, Eleanor Roosevelt, transcended her role as first lady through her work as a global activist. Appointed by President Harry Truman, she headed up the commission to write The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, that was a worldwide response to the atrocities committed during WW2. Harriet Tubman, conductor on the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman, who escaped from slavery herself, led hundreds of slaves to the North through the secret network of the Underground Railroad. In addition to abolition, Tubman advocated for women s suffrage, for she faced limitations as a citizen because of both her race and her sex. I was the conductor of the Underground Railroad for 8 years and I can say what most conductors can t, I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger. Rosa Parks, civil rights activist Rosa Parks is celebrated for her refusal to move to the back of a segregated bus, an action catalyzing the Montgomery bus boycott in The popular image of Parks as a weary seamstress not willing to relinquish her seat to a white man should not pre-empt her longstanding commitment to civil rights. She worked with the Scottsboro Boys in 1932 and was an officer in a branch of the NAACP, the nation s oldest civil rights organization. A symbol of the civil rights movement and an activist in her own right, Parks came in fourth place in our poll as a write-in candidate. Susan B. Anthony, suffragist Susan B. Anthony campaigned tirelessly for women s voting rights, but unfortunately she did not live to see the ratification of the 19th Amendment in Anthony became the first woman ever to be depicted on U.S. currency when the $1 coin debuted in A prominent figure in the women s suffrage movement, she helped found the National Woman Suffrage Association.

Also, our local Bee Inclined Quilter's group creates quilts and other functional items for charity. Contact Millie Szerman at or MillieSz746@gmail.com for more info. In the interest of the community, members may post public service-type announcements in our newsletter. These are not personal (selling appliances, cars, etc.); but for activities of interest to members or to the Tahoe community in general. All items must be written by the person making the announcement, limited to one paragraph, to be published at the discretion of the local AAUW Editor and President. Send to rgrean@aol.com
