1 Tahoe Nevada AAUW Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Volume 26, Number 8 Apr President s Message Happy Spring everyone! Thank you to all who attended the last dinner meeting. We had a wonderful time focusing on STEM education for women and enjoyed a fantastic program by Dr. Mary Guinan, PhD, MD. Entertaining and thought provoking, it centered on her journey as a woman in the male dominated STEM field. Our branch kicked off a fundraising campaign for the Incline Village High School seniors to attend We the People competition in Washington D.C. by making a donation of $1000. Speaking of STEM, we are seeking volunteers who are interested in participating in an advisory board for the State of Nevada AAUW. This board will be exploring the feasibility of STEM programs for our state. Contact Peggy Poindexter peggypoindexternv@gmail.com if you are interested. Be sure to join us on April 19, for another timely program on the issues of human trafficking. Additional information is in this newsletter. Several of our members attended a fundraiser for the Reno Branch at the Whispering Vine and had a delightful time. We have a flyer for their next event on April 22 later in this newsletter. The deadline is 4/17 so be sure to RSVP if you are interested in attending. Our fantastic fundraising committee, lead by Charlotte Curtis has many great events in the planning stages. We currently have tickets available for: Sunday, April 30, Private Brunch at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno which will include a docent led tour of the exhibit: Miradas: Ancient Roots in Modern and Contemporary Mexican Art; and access to all exhibits at the Museum. Tickets will be available at $55 per person. Please contact Charlotte Curtis charcurtisedd@aol.com to sign up. Sunday, August 6, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival will take place at Sand Harbor, Reserved seating tickets, private cocktail party, and dinner included all for $100! Contact Millie Szerman to RSVP MilliesSz746@gmail.com, or send your checks to our PO Box 5465, Incline Village, NV We are seeking volunteers to work before and at this event. Please Charlotte at charcurtisedd@aol.com if you are interested. Our popular Outdoor Enthusiast Groups have been meeting when allowed by the weather for great Snowshoeing and other winter activities. Contact Lynn Whetstone at lwhetstone@prodigy.net for additional information. Please note the next AAUW Book Group Meeting will be held on Monday, April 10th, at GLASSES Wine Bar! Contact Monica Hill at monicachill@gmail.com for questions or additional information. The Nominations committee has announced nominations for next year s officers and our election will be held at our Annual Meeting on May 20. Our hardworking Scholarship committee headed up by Karen Loullis will be interviewing applicants for our Incline High School Scholarships in April. We hope to have the winners attend our May meeting. I would like to thank all who continue to give generously to our scholarship fund. AAUW Tahoe Nevada is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization, registered with the Secretary of State, EIN: We welcome your donations throughout the year. Please contact our Treasurer, Cornelia Gould, at cornelia.gould@gmail.com or I wish to welcome all our new members and hope that you will join us for events that interest you! Please feel free to provide any feedback to me or other board members. You may reach me at or nicholas89451@gmail.com with your suggestions and comments. Dinner served at 6:15 followed by the program at 7:15. You will receive an e-invite in the next week or so. Our speaker for the April 19 th meeting will be JoAnn Behrman-Lippert, Ph.D. Dr. Lippert is a psychologist and trauma consultant with over 35 years of experience working with missing and exploited children and victims of crime. She also has experience assessing threats of violence and harassment and has served as a forensic consultant and evaluator in both criminal and civil actions in these areas. The title of her presentation will be Creating Protected Spaces: Working With Families in Missing Children Cases. In addition to treating children recovered from abductions, she has also assisted law enforcement and social services in reunifying children with their left behind parents. She states, While I have helped these families, these families have also taught me a great deal about creating a safe and protective environment in which they can grow and heal. The presentation will be about creating protected spaces for individuals to grow and heal. She maintains a private practice in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada. Please be aware that TN-AAUW must pay for all RSVP dinners. Our long-standing policy has been that if you have made a reservation for a dinner meeting and fail to cancel by 5PM on the Monday before the dinner, you will be expected to pay for the dinner. 9 PUBLIC POLICY Pamela Sheldon, AAUW Public Policy Chair Nevada Assembly votes to ratify Equal Right Amendment 35 years past the deadline! Are you as surprised as I am that this is even an issue? Even now, it only passed the Assembly 28 to 14 to ratify the ERA and still must go to the Senate for their vote. We cannot become complacent nor take for granted the progress we ve made to insure equal rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. As women and mothers and grandmothers of daughters, we must continue to support and become knowledgeable about the issues facing women today. The goals of AAUW-Nevada are in line with these issues: 1 Women in the State of Nevada are still battling equal pay. We all need to let our legislatures know the importance of this issue. You can logon to the Nevada State Legislature website to see or make comments on upcoming legislature. 2 STEM has become of upmost importance as Nevada moves forward with technology companies opening in our state. These jobs tend to be higher paying and often go to men. We must equip our young women to be qualified for jobs in the STEM arena by encouraging them in junior high school through week long camps. 3 We must encourage women to become leaders by offering leadership conferences, speakers at our AAUW meetings who themselves are dynamic leaders and encourage women to take leadership positions in the public and private sectors. Our legislature is 40% women, more than any other state, and while we can be proud of that fact, it is still less than half.
