2 CONFERENCE INFO This conference is intended for healthcare professionals who provide or are interested in geriatric care, including nurses, therapists, social workers and pharmacists. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for the care of geriatric patients and their families. Objectives List at least 3 ethical conflicts experienced when working with vulnerable clients. Understand self-determination as a constitutional, legal, and cultural right, as well as limits to clients right to self-determination. List 3 interventions to address clients unsafe decisions and how to decide whether to focus on clients right to self-determination or the need for protection. Identify evidence-based practices that can be integrated in daily clinical practice to enhance the care of older adults. Discuss the impact of normal age-related physiological changes in the elderly, and the implications for health care. Identify common geriatric syndromes that affect the delivery of care and describe the prevention and management strategies for each: agitation, dementia, polypharmacy, COPD, activity. Provide a balanced approach of both theory and practical applications for the care of the older adult. Define early stage Alzheimer s disease and related dementias. List at least 3 resources available to people with early dementia, their families and professionals.

3 Overview Caring for the older adult takes compassionate caregivers who have in-depth clinical skills and specialized knowledge imperative for planning, managing and evaluating the health care needs of this growing and complex population. Healthcare professionals often work with individuals who range from the active older adult in the community to the frail older adult in the acute or long-term care setting. The primary challenge is to identify and use the strengths of this population to assist them in maximizing their independence. Cancellation Policy Tuition is refundable (less a 25% handling fee) only if registration is cancelled in writing and is received in Allina Learning & Development at least 7 days prior to the beginning of the conference. Notices less than 7 days and no shows are non-refundable. Allina Health reserves the right to cancel this program. In the event of an emergency, we reserve the right to cancel a session or substitute a qualified speaker.
