2 We Cordially Invite You to Help Us Empower Future Generations At the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, we work to make a difference in the lives of future generations. Our organization s 7 th annual Symposium, scheduled for April 16-18, 2018, in Austin, Texas, will bring together professionals from across the state to participate in panel discussions, presentations and professional development workshops focused on providing the information, resources and tools necessary to create change and improve adolescent health in Texas. The Symposium theme Empowering the Next Generation will focus on creating opportunities for Texas youth, empowering them and helping them grow and learn, while also equipping them with the tools they need to create a successful future for themselves, their peers and their future families. We ll be asking and answering the big questions: What is the state of the adolescent health landscape in Texas and beyond? How can we encourage teens and young adults to make responsible choices? How can we integrate a new generation of voices -- both teens and young adults -- into our ongoing work? And, how can we invest in and magnify youth voices so that they are well equipped to engage their peers and communities? Emphasis will be placed on building stronger partnerships, creating cooperation among people in diverse communities and exploring how we can join hands with youth to support local community efforts in teen pregnancy prevention, sexuality education, youth development and adolescent health. By supporting The Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy s 7 th Annual Symposium, your organization will be able to introduce your products, programs and services to highly focused professionals from across Texas including social workers, clinicians, counselors, researchers, nurses, educators, youth service professionals, graduate students, and other key program staff who help shape young minds. 4 Profile of the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Established in 2009, the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is a non-partisan, non-profit education and advocacy organization dedicated to reducing the rate of teen pregnancy in Texas. We work to create constructive dialogue around teen pregnancy, adolescent sexual health and effective prevention strategies. Our guiding mission is to improve the quality of life for children, families and communities across Texas by preventing unintended teen pregnancies through our commitment to: Strengthening: Increasing the capacity of community members to address the complex issue of teen pregnancy by creating and leading a statewide network of local stakeholders who share a common agenda, coordinate activities, and track shared measures to build momentum for systemic statewide change. Connecting: Customizing approaches that build the capacity of local Texas stakeholders to develop evidence-based approaches to teen pregnancy prevention that address the unique circumstances in their communities. Providing: Communicating accurate, research-based information about what is working, and leveraging the strength of the statewide network to advocate for constructive change. Engaging: Creating big tent solutions to teen pregnancy by raising awareness about effective prevention programs and policies, and communicating information and ideas for talking to youth about healthy adolescent sexual development. Why It Matters Texas consistently has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. Texas has the highest rate of repeat teen birth in the nation. When children are born to parents just a few years older, not only do they have better outcomes overall, but they are more likely to be born to those ready for the lifelong responsibility of being a parent. Texas spends more state dollars than any other state as a result. Teenage births cost Texas taxpayers $1.1 billion in health care, foster care and lost tax revenue in Teen pregnancy is connected to lower educational attainment, an unprepared workforce, higher incarceration rates, more kids in foster care, higher demands on Medicaid and the public health system and the repetition of this cycle generation after generation.
