2 From the Manager Debbie Crosser I love this time of year when we begin to see all the beautiful colors of fall and the changes of cool weather approaching. As it is getting cooler I want to remind our residents to stay warm and be prepared for the changes we are seeing. I ask that all family members please help your loved one with cleaning out their closet. Please pack your summer items up and replace them with sweatshirts and fall or winter coats. If you need any help with this please do not hesitate to ask. I want everyone to know that at Emery Place safety and security is always a priority of ours. We have been advised by two different residents that they have received inappropriate and suspicious phone calls demanding or requesting money. Every year, thousands of people lose money to telephone scams from a few dollars to their life savings. Scammers will say anything to cheat people out of money. Some seem very friendly calling you by your first name, making small talk, and asking about your family. They may claim to work for a company you trust, or they may send mail or place ads to convince you to call them. If you get a call from someone you don t know who is trying to sell you something you hadn t planned to buy, say "No thanks." And, if they pressure you about giving up personal information like your credit card or Social Security number it s likely a scam. Hang up and report it to the Emery Place and we will contact the authorities. Signs of a Scam Here are a few red flags to help you spot telemarketing scams. If you hear a line that sounds like this, say "no, thank you," hang up! You've been specially selected (for this offer). You'll get a free bonus if you buy our product. You've won one of five valuable prizes. You've won big money in a foreign lottery. This investment is low risk and provides a higher return than you can get anywhere else. You have to make up your mind right away. You trust me, right? You don't need to check our company with anyone. We'll just put the shipping and handling charges on your credit card. Please hang up and notify us of any suspicious calls! Thank you, and please know that my door is always open, stop by or make an appointment.

3 From Healthcare: Megan Larsen Happy Thanksgiving month everyone! Thank you to everyone who came to get their flu and pneumonia shots in October. Please remember to cover your cough, wash your hands frequently and avoid common areas when you aren t feeling well. This will hopefully keep all the residents and staff happy and healthy and out of the hospital through the holidays! Also, don t forget our vitals clinics every Tuesday at 9am in the library! This month, I reflect on things I am thankful for and I want to express my gratitude to all Emery Place residents! All of you have in one way or another blessed my life in some way. Thank you for choosing Emery Place as your home. I am happy to come to work every day to see each of you! You and your families are more than welcome to reserve the library for private dining for the holidays. There is no cost to reserve the room; it s first come, first serve. You just need to contact me so that I can get it on the calendar. You may have the special for the day, eat off the anytime menu or bring your own food in. The cost for Emery Place meals are $6.00/plate. Have a great month! Everyone loves to bake!

5 From Life Enrichment: Misty Cottrell Hello Everyone! My name is Misty Cottrell and I am the new Life Enrichment Coordinator here at Emery Place. I joined Emery Place in August as a Universal Worker and have enjoyed getting to know all of you. Emery Place is a very welcoming community and I am so proud to be a part of it. A little bit about myself- I was born and raised in Iowa and although the weather is very unpredictable, I love it here! My husband and I enjoy living in Marion with our 12 year old son Garrett and our cat Chloe. As a family we enjoy sports, family game night and spending time with loved ones. When we are not attending sporting events, you can find me working on a craft or curled up with a good book. As Life Enrichment Coordinator, I am excited to support new activities, clubs and outings for you to enjoy!! I am committed to offering fresh and exciting entertainment this holiday season. Suggestions are always welcome and appreciated. Bring a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and join us at the next event, I look forward seeing you!! Fun Social Hour! Pet Therapy with Lilly!

6 From Culinary Dustin Cheek October has been a fun month! Although, we said good bye to Derek, we had an awesome party and he will be in to see us. At the time of writing this, we haven t celebrated our Halloween party, but I know that our party will be a lot of fun! Celeste Williams has joined Emery Place as a cook and has done an outstanding job. I have started planning the Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you for getting your reservations in! If you haven t already, I will need them by November 15. I am working on our menu for the fall and will be changing things up a bit! If anyone has any input on meals or recipes, please feel free to share them with any of the kitchen staff. Have a great November! 7 Dare to Dream: Betty at Riverside! Emery Place wanted to treat Betty to a day at the casino with her two daughters. Hannah drove the three of them in the bus down to Riverside Casino. Emery Place treated them all to the lunch buffet and gave Betty some gambling money. After lunch, Betty hit the slots! She sat at the same machine all afternoon and after about two hours, Betty left with $64! She had such a wonderful time and was smiling the whole ride home! Dare to Dream: Surprise 80th! Gladys turned 80 over the weekend and her daughter, Sheryl, threw her a surprise birthday party at Lowe Park in Marion. Emery Place passed out invitations to her friends and they were all very excited to help her celebrate. We kept the secret from Gladys for two weeks! Emery Place had Lori style her hair and give her a manicure, that she showed off to everyone, so she looked extra good for her party. She was very surprised to see many family members from out of state as well as her friends from Emery. We had a wonderful meal and had a great time visiting with one another. Everyone had fun celebrating!
