4 THE RESEARCH Friedreich s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common cause of inherited ataxia; 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA Gene. What begins as difficulty with balance and coordination, progresses over a short period of time to a life altering loss of mobility, energy, speech and hearing, robbing children and young adults of the ability to live active and independent lives. FA also presents serious risk of diabetes and life shortening cardiac disease. The Friedreich s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) funds research and builds partnerships needed to advance effective treatments for FA, and provides hope for families and individuals affected by this debilitating disease. The support of the Energy Ball has allowed FARA to nurture important partnerships and advance critical initiatives including: Drug discovery research that has led to new lead candidates in our treatment pipeline that are being tested in multiple ongoing clinical trials in individuals with FA Active research programs with more than fifteen large and small pharmaceutical partners Initiation of a biomarker consortium of academic and pharmaceutical partners to find better ways to measure disease change and shorten clinical trial lengths Evaluation of more than 900 individuals with FA at clinical research centers around the world When our generous donors, dedicated researchers, pharmaceutical partners and courageous individuals battling FA come together, FARA facilitates life changing research progress. 5 THE RESEARCH The USF Health Ataxia Research Center is one of the Nation s leading clinical research centers evaluating effective treatments for inherited ataxia disorders. Ataxias cause an inability to coordinate voluntary muscular movements and can lead to progressive disability. The USF Health Center combines the cutting edge research of a team of international neuroscientists with state-of-the-art clinical practice by physicians who focus on the development and delivery of effective therapies for those affected by Friedreich s and Spinocerebellar Ataxia. In addition to conducting major trials of new pharmaceutical agents to treat inherited ataxias, they are working on better methods of early diagnosis and a more comprehensive understanding of these diseases. As USF pursues a cure for these diseases, we need your help!
