1 PREMIUM QUALITY FEED-ENHANCER GENEX SPECIES POULTRY POULTRY Cleaner feed, improved productivity
2 Background With the advent of greener, more environmentally friendly farming practices there has been a distinct move towards the production of more natural food stuffs for human consumption. A major aspect of this is the inevitable trend in favour of food produced under more acceptable conditions, including animals which have been fed diets free from inappropriate additives. What does GENEX POULTRY do? Recently, there has been a growing concern over the irresponsible use of antibiotics in animal production causing cross-resistance to the generation of antibiotics intended for use in human medicine. The consequences for food production are serious and the industry will have to find an alternative method of maintaining modern levels of production and routinely controlling microbial populations - but in a way that is consistent with a natural and green approach. The answer lies in Genex Poultry a unique blend ESSENTIALS OILS ORGANIC ACIDS GENEX PLANT EXTRACTS Phyllosilicates Multiple synergistic associations: bacteriostatic and bactericide effect in feed Protects intestinal mucosa and villi from harmful bacteria consumed via the feed Helps the animal achieve the optimal intestinal microbial balance by reducing exposure to contaminated feed Supports animal health and digestive function Phyllosilicate carrier known to adsorb mycotoxins and endotoxins Phyllosilicate carrier enables slow release of active components The effects of pathogenic infection: HEALTH PROBLEMS PRODUCTION PROBLEMS Diarrhoea Low growth rates Wet litter Poor FCR Secondary infections Uneven growth Mortality Lack of uniformity of organic acids, essential oils and plant extracts. By combining all of these components, Genex Poultry provides excellent protection against feed borne pathogens, collectively known as enterobacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter etc. The unique blend of active ingredients used in Genex Poultry is born of intensive R&D. It is not just the ingredients themselves that give the product its unique properties, it is the ratio and balance between them that achieve the optimal synergistic effect present in Genex Poultry. By examining the potential of each material and considering how it may enhance the efficacy of the other components, the researchers at Optivite designed the ultimate formulation that makes Genex Poultry so effective.
3 GENEX POULTRY: The Science HOW DOES GENEX POULTRY WORK? The essential oils in Genex Stimulate feed intake Damage microorganism cell wall structure - Cell contents lost - Disrupts cell homeostasis/genetic material replication - Allows more organic acid into cell Prevent flagella formation - Limits movement - Limits growth & multiplication The challenge from enterobacteria Enterobacteria such as salmonella and E. coli are a major threat to the performance of poultry. There are many possible sources of infection of which feed is one of the main route. Intestinal wall microvilli, microscopic cellular membrane protrusions, that are responsible for a wide variety of functions including absorption of nutrients, can be seriously damaged by enterobacteria. This can lead to the malabsorption of nutrients reducing the efficiency of digestion and inhibiting animal performance. Organic acids Organic acids are used to control potentially pathogenic bacteria. Genex Poultry is formulated using a unique blend of organic acids combined with a stable carrier. It s the types of acids used in Genex Poultry that make the difference. Why use organic acids? Organic acids are used to control potentially pathogenic bacteria due to their ability to penetrate the bacterial cell wall of Gramnegative bacteria. Once the cell has been compromised the organic acids disrupt cell metabolism, thus killing the bacteria. Organic acids their effect on Gramnegative enterobacteria e.g. E. coli: Organic acids (AH) consist of two components, negatively charged anions (A-) and positively charged hydrogen ions or cations (H+). STEP 1 The acid penetrates the cell wall AH move into the cell & split, acidifying the internal cell environment. In order to maintain the neutrality of the internal environment, the cell moves to step 2. Organic acids Their effect on lactobacilli bacteria A similar process also takes place in lactic acid producing bacteria lactobacilli. However, our acids target the harmful bacteria, not the beneficial bacteria that contribute to a healthy gut. STEP 1 The acid penetrates the cell wall Lactobacilli are acid tolerant, so are able to cope with a greater ph shift. Untreated cells (control) (After Burt & Reinders, Letters in Applied Microbiology (2003) 36: ) The plant extracts in Genex Natural surfactants - Coats bacteria - Damages bacterial cell wall - Cell contents lost - Allows more organic acid into cell - Enhances essential oil effect Cells damaged after treatment with essential oil By combining all of these components, Genex Poultry provides excellent protection against enterobacteria. STEP 2 Removal of cations The cell uses energy to power the proton pumps which move H+ out of the cell. STEP 2 Removal of cations Less energy used in moving H+ out of the cell. The table below demonstrates the efficacy in feed of Genex Poultry at 4kg/t against a range of pathogens. Healthy microvilli 100 CONTROL GENEX POULTRY Challenged microvilli STEP 3 Cell dies As the cell is using all of its available energy moving H+ out of the cell normal cell function is impaired. Inhibition of DNA replacement occurs leading to cell death. STEP 3 Cell survives The energy expended is low meaning more energy is available for normal cell function and viability. % SURVIVAL AFTER 48hrs E. coli adheres to the intestinal mucosa causing the destruction of intestinal microvilli Reference: Dr David Dean, Institute of Cell & Molecular Biosciences, University of Newcastle, UK = Anions (Negatively charged) KEY: = Hydrogen/Cations (Positively charged) o SALMONELLA ENTERITIDIS ESCHERICHIA COLI STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS STREPTOCOCCUS FAECALIS BACTERIA CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI PASTEURELLA MULTOCIDA
4 Case Study poultry Performance benefits are reported when using Genex Poultry to treat feed. Bacterial control of the feed leads to More available nutrients and energy Better intestinal health The benefit of this is that additional nutrients and energy are available to the bird Energy Study An energy study with growing broilers was undertaken to determine the validity of a proposed feed energy value to be given to Genex Poultry. CONTROL LIVEWEIGHT (KG) 2.51 FCR MORTALITY (%) Replacement of Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) The ability of Genex Poultry treated feed to replace feed containing AGPs was investigated to determine if performance could be maintained or even improved. LIVEWEIGHT (KG) FCR MORTALITY (%) Inclusion rates STARTER 2-4kg/t GROWER FINISHER WITHDRAWAL -56KCAL/KG ME, +2KG/T GENEX KCAL/KG, +4KG/T GENEX 2.52 NEGATIVE CONTROL, -112KCAL/KG Genex at can replace 56kCal/kg of dietary ME. Genex at 4kg/t can replace 112kCal/kg dietary ME. This can be used in 2 practical ways : Using GENEX POULTRY To (a) reduce dietary ME by 56 (or 112) kcal/kg and add 2 (or 4) kg/t Genex. (b) give Genex an ME value of 28,000 kcal/kg and formulate the diet restricting Genex to 2 or 4 kg/t as required. Alternatively, Genex can be added to the diet without accounting for any energy effect and accept the improvements in performance. CONTROL INC AGP NO AGP, +2KG/T GENEX The results suggest that feed containing Genex Poultry at onne will perform as well as that containing an AGP. control bacterial levels in feed as part of an overall reduction strategy offers a number of benefits as the results below demonstrate Benefits of GENEX POULTRY To control bacteria in feed and protect it from environmental recontamination Allows optimal digestibility thereby improving daily liveweight gain and feed conversion Anti-microbial feed treatment will reduce the potential for harmful bacterial growth in the bird s environment and thus reduce the possibility of clinical and subclinical disease Will not interfere with therapeutic antibiotics Will leave no residues or contribute to the development of drug resistance Treated feed has been shown to give similar or improved performance to feeds containing antibiotic growth promoters Effective feed treatment helping control moulds and protect feed nutrients Has no withdrawal period All ingredients are officially approved by the European Union Can be included in feed without the need for special equipment Is stable under severe heat treatment Summary of trial results, comparing feed treated with Genex Poultry to a control feed SA 1A SA 1B SA 2 SA 3 SA 4 IR 1 ME 1 LOCATION SOUTH AFRICA IRAN MIDDLE EAST Total birds involved million birds No. OF BIRDS OBJECTIVE CHANGE IN FCR (pts) LIVEWEIGHT IMPROVEMENT (g) CHANGE IN MORTALITY (%) SLAUGHTER AGE IMPROVEMENT (days) 360K K K K K TOP DRESS 2-4kg/t K K Improved FCR - Av (-0.04 to -0.13) Improved liveweight - Av 58g (7g to 150g) Reduced mortality - Av 1.01% (-0.03% to -2.43%) Faster days to market weight - Av 1.09 (0.8 to 1.34)
