Cats and dogs evolved as hunters and, despite a modern lifestyle, their anatomical features are adapted to an almost exclusively meat-based diet. INGREDIENT RATIO OUR PHILOSOPHY Dogs and cats evolved as hunters the physical structure of their teeth, jaws and digestive system scientifically classifies them as carnivores, evolved to operate on an almost exclusively meat-based diet. 8 RULE NUMBER 2 MEAT CONCENTRATED AND PROTEIN RICH THE DOG IS, BY ALL SCIENTIFIC STANDARDS AND BY EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY, A DOMESTICATED WOLF. From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, all dogs carry the same DNA and share a single evolutionary origin the gray wolf. So it s no surprise to learn that modern dogs of all breeds are not only capable of eating the food of their wild ancestors, but actually require it for peak health. Just like their wild cousins, our companion dogs and cats are carnivores equipped with sharp teeth, a short digestive tract, and a body evolved to metabolize protein and fat from meat. PROTEIN vs. CARBOHYDRATES AN UP AND DOWN RELATIONSHIP. PROTEIN CARBS Most pet owners are unaware of the relationship between protein and carbohydrates in their pet s food. Yet it s quite simple. IF ONE GOES UP, THE OTHER MUST GO DOWN. In other words, the more protein in the food, the less room there is for carbohydrates. And that s good, because while protein is essential for peak health, dogs and cats have absolutely NO requirement for carbohydrates. As carnivores, dogs and cats evolved to metabolize meat proteins and fats as energy sources and have ABSOLUTELY NO CARBOHYDRATE REQUIREMENT, which is why Biologically Appropriate ORIJEN contains about HALF OF THE CARBOHYDRATES of conventional or holistic pet foods. In fact, for dogs and cats, carbohydrates are empty calories simple sugars that provide little nutritional value beyond their controversial energy potential.
