Note also that the anatomical diagrams do NOT form part of the examination there is NO requirement to learn the extra information contained in them. Their function is only to aid revision by showing the spatial organisation in the body of items mentioned in the text. 2 Kidneys Responsible for monitoring the body's levels of water, acids, salts and proteins (WASP) and eliminate toxins The Kidneys are each about 10cm long by 65cm wide and weigh approximately 140gm The Kidneys are not in the small of the back, but higher behind the 12th ribs Heart A hollow muscular organ, left of centre in the chest, in the space between the 5th and 8th ribs The Heart has 4 chambers: the left and right (upper) Auricles (or Atria), and the left and right (lower) Ventricles The average weight of an adult s Heart is between gm, and is about the size of a closed fist Blood enters the heart via the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava, and the 4 Pulmonary Veins, leaves via the Aorta, and the left and right Pulmonary Arteries The Heart rate of a healthy adult is about 70 beats per minute (bpm) while resting, rising to around 80 bpm while standing, and with fairly strenuous exercise to about 125 bpm Heart rates are faster in children and slightly faster in the elderly Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
3 Spleen The Spleen holds a reserve supply of blood, and some blood is released during strenuous training The Spleen deals with the destruction of worn-out blood corpuscles, and manufactures lymphocytes It lies on the left side beneath the 9th, 10th and 11th ribs, and touches the left kidney It is about 13cm long and weighs about 200gm Ears The organs of hearing and balance The Outer Ear deflects sounds into a Canal leading to the Eardrum, which causes it to vibrate These vibrations are passed to the Middle Ear and meet the Ossicles, the 3 smallest bones of the body (see Skull) Tongue The Tongue is a muscular organ in the mouth the organ of taste. It is covered with moist, pink tissue called Mucosa Tiny bumps called Papillae give the tongue its rough texture Thousands of Taste Buds cover the surfaces of the Papillae Taste Buds are collections of nerve-like cells that connect to nerves running into the brain Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
4 Eyes The Eyes are the organs of sight. The Eye is a slightly asymmetrical globe, about 2.54cm in diameter. The Eyeball includes: The Iris (the coloured part) The Cornea (a clear dome over the iris with the Lens behind) The Pupil (the black circular opening in the Iris that lets light in) The Sclera (the white part) The Conjunctiva (a thin layer of tissue covering the front of the Eye, except the Cornea) Nose Nose is the primary organ for breathing, smell, it filters air that travels into the Lungs, and is also involved in the sense of taste. The Nose consists of: Nasal Bone - usually known as the Bridge of the Nose Septum - cartilage is the main part of the Nose and is flexible Nostrils - two channels - the external openings Sinuses - are cavities in the Skull behind the nose Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
5 Respiration & Lungs The main organs of respiration, 2 in number, laying either side of the heart, divided into lobes; the right has 3, the left 2 Air is drawn into the Lungs by Inspiration and expelled by Expiration Oxygen is taken in the blood to the Heart where it is pumped, via the Arteries, to all parts of the body Similarly, carbon dioxide is taken from the blood via the Veins to leave the body Breathing rate is about 16 times per minute when at rest, but can be changed voluntarily The rate is controlled by the respiration centre in the Medulla Oblongata part of the Brain Brain & Central Nervous System The Brain and Spinal Cord form the Central Nervous System. The Brain Is divided into 5 main parts: Cerebrum Cerebellum Midbrain Medulla Oblongata Pons Varioli The average adult Brain weighs just over 1.4kg There are 12 pairs of Cranial Nerves; all are connected directly to the Brain Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
6 Spinal Cord The Spinal Cord extends from the Medulla Oblongata to the 1st Lumbar Vertebra The Spinal Cord is roughly the thickness of a little finger and about 45cm long There are 31 pairs of Spinal Nerves, some of which form networks called Plexuses The most prominent Plexuses are: Cervical Brachial Lumbo-Sacral Skeleton An adult has 206 Bones, including the fused Bones of the Skull, Sacrum and the Coccyx The Skeleton matures at 25 years The only Bone without a function is the Coccyx Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
7 Skull Consists of 8 Cranial and 14 Facial Bones. The Hyoid Bone found in the floor of the mouth is the only Bone that does not articulate with another Bone. Cranial Parietal (2) Temporal (2) Frontal Occipital Ethmoid Sphenoid Facial Maxilla (2) Zygomatic (2) Mandible Nasal (2) Inferior Turbinate (2) Palatine (2) Lacrimal (2) Vomer Auditory Ossicles (Bones of the Ear) are also found in the skull: Malleus (Hammer) (2) Incus (Anvil) (2) Stapes (Stirrup) (2) Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11
8 Spinal Vertebrae There are 33 Spinal Vertebrae comprised of: 7 Cervical 12 Thoracic 5 Lumbar 5 Sacral & 4 Coccygeal (Fused) Among the Cervical Vertebrae are the Atlas and Axis, which allow the rocking and turning of the head Thoracic Cage (Rib Cage) Consists of the 12 Thoracic Vertebrae, plus 12 pairs of Ribs and the Sternum The upper 7 pairs are True Ribs The 8th, 9th and 10th pairs are False Ribs The 11th & 12th pairs are Floating Ribs The Sternum (Breastbone) consists of 3 fused parts: Manubrium (top) Gladiolus (body) Xiphoid Process (bottom tip) Earl Walker / Brian Herbert 2014 Jikishin Ju Jitsu Association of 11

11 The Tarsals form the Ankle and are: Talus Navicular Calcaneum Cuneiforms (3) Cuboid Tendons & Ligaments A Tendon is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches Muscle to Bone. Tendons may also attach Muscles to structures such as the eyeball.
