1 23 June2017 From the Principal s Desk Schools are always busy places and Baralaba SS, like most schools, is full of youthful energy and enthusiasm. It has been an absolute pleasure to see all of this energy in acon over the last part of this semester. We have certainly been kept busy with the many acvi- es happening in our school. Biggest Morning Tea Cuppa in the Park It was a great opportunity for our enre school to join the local community at the school park for the Biggest Morning Tea. Our students absolutely loved all of the treats to enjoy for our morning tea. Thank you to the many locals who cooked up a storm! Thank you also to the Year 3/4 class who parcipated in the Simultaneous Read-Aloud presentaon of The Cow Tripped Over the Moon. Home Economics Building Refurbishment The refurbishment of our Home Economics building will provide an excing and modern learning space for our students. It will give us the opportunity to reinvigorate our orchard and school s kitchen gardens. The successful contractor will begin working in this space during Term 3. It will be wonderful to see all students using this air-condioned, modernised space in the near future. School Athle cs Carnival What an awesome day we all had on Wednesday 21 June. Our students had an exhausng day full of challenge and excitement. Thank you to the staff involved in the organisaon of the day. Thank you to the many parents and families who made the effort to come along and join us. Your parcipa- on on days like this make them very special memories for your children. Congratulaons to Mimosa House and the age champions for their success at the 2017 Athlecs Carnival. Semester 1 Report Cards As the school semester ends for the June/ July school holidays, report cards will be posted home on Friday 23 June. It has been a pleasure to read through the comments that classroom teachers have wri7en. Parents please use this report as an opportunity to reflect with your child on the progress they have made in Semester 1 and to discuss their goals for Semester 2. Some possible quesons to ask are Which subject/s would they like to improve in during Semester 2? How do they think they could do this? Along with this report card each student will receive a le7er with their personal a7endance rate. This le7er also provides informaon about the number of school days per year and the number of non-school days per year. These are interesng numbers to think about. School holidays, though, are a chance to rest, relax and to have a bit of fun with family and friends. I m sure you are all ready for this me. Please take care over the holiday period. Rest well and travel safely. We look forward to seeing you again at the start of Semester 2 on Monday 10 July Kate Davis Our P&C Commi7ee would like to thank the many families, staff and community members that helped to make our catering at the Baralaba Show such a success. Thank you for your donaons, for your help and for your support with the catering. 2 23 June 2017 From Our Primary School Classrooms: Year 5/6 (Mr Abawi) The Year 5 s and 6 s have all been busy in the assessment stage of each of their units and they have been producing some amazing work! English In the first half of the term, students were busy creang their own animated movies based on a story involving a dilemma. Then, both Year 5 and 6 were looking at the classic Australian novel Storm Boy by Colin Theile, and comparing the novel to the film based on the story to make a judgement on which version tells a be7er story. Science The Year 5 s have considered how different variables can affect how fast a liquid evaporates. They are looking at the relaonship between heat and changes of state, and creang an experiment of their own design to invesgate what can affect the rate of evaporaon. The Year 6 s have been creang a fair test to scienfically examine whether changes are reversible or irreversible. They are designing an experiment involving heang and cooling different materials to test whether all changes made by heang are able to be reversed or not. History We have been examining a variety of topics relang to Australia s past and our origins of mulculturalism due to migraon of different ethnic groups. The Year 5 s focused on Chinese miners on the goldfields, while the Year 6 s looked at Vietnamese migraon in 20 th century Australia stemming from the Vietnam War. Maths At the start of the term, both Year 5 and 6 had been examining angles, with Year 6 s looking at how to calculate angles without the use of a protractor. Now the Year 6 s have turned their a7enon to performing calculaons using the Order of Operaons Rules, while the Year 5 s have started looking at deciphering number pa7erns and the rules that create them. Phone: (07) Fax: (07) From Our High School Classrooms: An Online Wri*ng Workshop with Jack Heath Our high school children parcipated in an online wring workshop on the 6 th June with the author Jack Heath. Jack is an Australian writer of children's and young adult ficon, and an internaonally bestselling author. He wrote The Cut Out, 500 Minutes of Danger and eighteen other acon-packed thrillers for young people. His books have been shortlisted for mulple awards, oponed for film and television, and published in several languages. They have sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide. Jack started wring his first novel at age 13, when he wondered why books weren't as acon-packed as the video games he liked. He submi7ed the novel to a publisher when he was 17, and it was published when he was 19. Our aspiring writers Dinequa, Andrew, Emily, Elijah, Shelly, Esther and Kaleah were lucky enough to workshop their budding ideas with inspiraonal Jack. Thank you Mrs Read for organising this opportunity for our students.
