2 European School of Radiology The European School of Radiology (ESOR) is an integrated and multidynamic institution, fulfilling the mission of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in the field of education. Its main goal is to assist in harmonising radiological education in Europe. With its wide range of activities, ESOR additionally aims to raise standards in the field of scientific radiology, to extend and coordinate teaching resources worldwide and to help young radiologists to obtain the knowledge and skills to fulfil tomorrow s requirements. ESOR stands for education in partnership. The ESOR Tutorials are implemented with the support of our valued partners GE Healthcare/Nycomed, Mallinckrodt and Siemens Healthcare. 3 Welcome ESOR Committee March 2014 March 2015 Dear Colleagues, One of the principle tasks of ESOR is to assist in raising the profile of radiological education in areas of Europe where it is most needed. ESOR tutorials are utilised to transfuse broader knowledge and to further the experience of young radiologists, senior residents and board-certified radiologists, in daily practice requirements, through an intense, one to two weeks, structured course and mentored exchange, in a European reference centre. Traditionally, ESOR tutorials are aiming at Russia and the CIS countries. Their undeniable appreciation and success prompted ESOR to a major expansion this year. As a result, in 2014 ESOR is restoring the traditional Graz tutorials, at the university hospital of Graz under the leadership and tutorship of Prof. Fuchsjäger, while repeating the newly introduced in 2013 Prague tutorials, at the University Hospital Motol under the chairmanship and tutorship of Prof. RoČek. A major addition for 2014 is the implementation of the Astana tutorials, exclusively focusing to the countries of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This tutorial will be organised for the first time outside Europe at the National Research Cardiac Surgery Clinic in Astana, under the chairmanship and tutorship of Dr. Dautov. The tutorials comprise lectures on a variety of topics, covering modern diagnostic and interventional radiology. Mentored hands-on workshops on ultrasound, CT and MRI are also included. Additional exposure to non-interpretory issues of the broader culture of radiology is provided as well, addressing radiological education, departmental workflow, quality assurance or administrative principles. The programmes are performed by a renowned faculty including local and invited European speakers. During 2014, ESOR Tutorials will enable 30 successful applicants from Russia, CIS and Central Asian countries to take advantage and benefit from a dense, multithematic, mentored and interactive programme. 4 ESOR Tutorials Prague ESOR Prague Tutorial June 2 13, 2014 Prague/Czech Republic Aim The aim of the ESOR Tutorials is to further the experience of young radiologists, residents in their last year of training and board-certified radiologists, in daily radiological practice through intense teaching and exchange in a European reference centre. For two weeks participants are offered practical and theoretical knowledge and the opportunity to be integrated in the activities of an academic department of radiology. The tutorial will be organised by the University Hospital Motol in Prague under the chairmanship of Prof. M. Roček. The ESOR Prague Tutorial is supported by an unrestricted grant of GE Healthcare Nycomed. Number of available places In 2014, 12 places for radiologists from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are available. City information Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic and has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1,100 years. For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance periods, Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus it was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4.1 million international visitors annually. Prague suffered considerably less damage during World War II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to stay true to form. It contains one of the world s most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Art Nouveau to Baroque, Renaissance, Cubist, Gothic, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern. 2

City information Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1997, is situated on a picturesque bank of the Ishim River. Since acquiring the status of capital the city s face has changed dramatically. The architects and builders working in the capital create wonderful architectural ensembles, which harmoniously combine modern design and oriental flair. The Baiterek Tower has become the city s symbol and its visiting card. The height of the structure is 105 meters. At the height of 97 meters there is an observation deck providing a bird s eye view of the city. The figure of 97 was not chosen at random. It symbolises the year of the movement of the capital from Almaty to Astana. Astana has become one of the largest business centres in the region. All governmental organisations, the diplomatic missions of 44 countries and 113 joint ventures and foreign businesses are located here. In 1999 by decision of UNESCO, Astana was awarded the title of World City. The city has an opera and ballet theatre, a drama theatre and a variety of museums. The monuments of Astana are a linking element between the new capital and its history, held in esteem by all the people in Kazakhstan. The climate of the region is extreme with typically long and snowy winters. Average January temperature is -14 C to 18 C which sometimes drops to below -40 C. Spring is late but amazingly beautiful, and comes at the end of March. At this time, the steppe looks especially wonderful with its wealth of blooming toffees and tulips. Summers are moderately hot, with plenty of rain showers and clear sunny days. Average July temperature is 20 C to 24 C. 10
