2 European School of Radiology The European School of Radiology (ESOR) is an integrated and multi-dynamic institution, fulfilling the mission of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in the field of education. Its main goal is to assist in harmonising radiological education in Europe. With its wide range of activities, ESOR additionally aims to raise standards in the field of scientific radiology, to extend and coordinate teaching resources worldwide and to help young radiologists to obtain the knowledge and skills to fulfil tomorrow s requirements. ESOR stands for education in partnership. The AIMS Programme in Latin America is implemented with the Brazilian College of Radiology, the Mexican Federadtion of Radiology and the Mexican Society of Radiology, as well as our valuable partner Bracco. Date of printing: February 2014 While the greatest care is taken in compiling this information, the editor does not take responsibility for any printing errors or omissions.
3 Welcome to AIMS Mexico Dear Colleagues, The AIMS programme has been set up by ESOR to establish educational links and exchange between ESR and National Radiological Societies outside Europe. As of last year, the programme has been expanded to establish a working partnership with the Mexican Federation of Radiology (FMRI) and the Mexican Society of Radiology (SMRI). This opens up a long-term opportunity for an educational bridge and scientific integration in radiology between Europe and Mexico, which is made possible by an unrestricted grant from Bracco. In 2014 two seminars will be held, focusing on Infections and Inflammatory Disorders. The chosen venues are Mexico City and Mérida. The educational programmes will be delivered jointly by renowned European speakers and esteemed Mexican lecturers in an effort to create additional opportunities in exchanging expertise and enhancing scientific ties. We do hope that such an international cooperation responds to and addresses actual needs, at the same time offering scientific synergies and partnership envisioned to flourish on a larger scale. On behalf of the FMRI, the SMRI and ESOR, we would like to encourage young colleagues from Mexico to actively participate and benefit from an excellent programme. Learning objectives to identify the role of imaging for detection, characterisation, and follow-up in selected common infectious and inflammatory disorders affecting the CNS, the lungs, the abdomen and the joints to present recent advances in imaging of the highlighted infectious and inflammatory conditions to explain the strategy for acquiring a comprehensive imaging examination in specific conditions such as the immunocompromised patient or systemic autoimmune diseases to apply interpretation methodology/principles and recognise keys and pitfalls in the differential diagnosis from neoplastic diseases to get familiar with essential imaging features which may alter the therapeutic management of the highlighted infectious and inflammatory disorders This AIMS programme is implemented with great support and partnership of the Mexican Society of Radiology and Bracco. 2 City information Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and is ranked 8 th among North America s Top Ten Major Cities. It is the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world with an estimated population of around 8.84 million people. Mexico City is one of the most important financial, cultural, political and educational centres in North America. It is located in the Valley of Mexico, in the high plateaus in the centre of Mexico. The whole city consists of a total of sixteen boroughs. The Nahua Aztec or Mexica tribe established Mexico City in 1325 and it became the capital of a sophisticated growing empire. It was originally located on a small island but because of its rapid growth, the city was forced to build artificial islands and a series of canals to absorb the growth of the metropolis. The Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes entered the area in 1519 This AIMS and acquired programme the is city implemented in with great The baroque Metropolitan Cathedral and the Basilica of Guadalupe were built during support that and period. partnership of the Mexican Society of Radiology and Bracco

With 60 per cent of its inhabitants being of the Maya ethnicity, it has the highest percentage of indigenous persons of all large cities in Mexico. Mérida was built on the site of the ancient Maya city of T hó, which had been a centre of Mayan culture for centuries. Therefore, Mérida is believed to be the oldest continually-occupied city in North and South America. T hó was built with carved Maya stones, many of which were also used for buildings in Mérida, for instance for the wall of the city s main cathedral. Among Mérida s most famous sights are the city s main avenue, Paseo de Montejo, the Centenario Park as well as the Casa de Montejo, which was built 460 This years AIMS ago programme and belonged is implemented to one of with great the city s founders. support and partnership of the Mexican Society of Radiology and Bracco

13 Welcome to AIMS Brazil Dear Colleagues, The AIMS programme has been set up by ESOR to establish educational ties and exchange between ESR and National Radiological Societies outside Europe. As of 2012, the programme has been expanded to include Latin America, aiming at first to create a close partnership with the Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR). This opened up new horizons in bridging radiological communities of Europe and Latin America. The four programmes implemented so far were rewarding and extremely appreciated, while the perspectives of a long-term educational collaboration between CBR and ESOR/ESR look bright, also due to an unrestricted grant from Bracco. In 2014 two seminars will be held in Brazil, focusing on Advanced Abdominal Imaging. The chosen venues are Campinas (São Paulo) and Recife (Pernambuco). The educational programmes will be delivered jointly by renowned European speakers and esteemed Brazilian lecturers in an effort to create additional opportunities in exchanging expertise and enhancing scientific cooperation. We do hope that such an international cooperation responds to and addresses actual needs, at the same time offering scientific synergies and partnership envisioned to flourish on a larger scale. On behalf of CBR and ESOR, we would like to encourage colleagues from Brazil and other Latin American countries to actively participate and benefit from an excellent programme. It is designed to provide an in-depth view into modern state of the art in advance imaging. The programme offers an update of current practice in the fields of diffusion weighted imaging, image quantification, liver function, oncologic imaging, small and large bowel advance techniques and pelvic floor dysfunction. A joint renowned European and Brazilian faculty will present the benefits of imaging and provide tips for problem solving and analysis of pitfalls. Learning objectives to appreciate the potential of advanced imaging in the management of neoplastic and inflammatory abdominal diseases to get informed about the new indications and clinical applications of modern CT and MRI tools to learn how to solve difficult clinical problems implementing state-of-the-art advanced imaging techniques to understand the technical requirements to perform quantitative and functional imaging of the abdomen to be familiar with the proper use of different imaging modalities and the new tools for a modern approach of many abdominal disorders This AIMS programme is implemented with great support and partnership of the Brazilian College of Radiology and Bracco. 12 City information Campinas is located in the southeast of Brazil and is home to the University of Campinas, one of the most prestigious Universities in Latin America. The name of the city is Portuguese for grass fields and refers to its characteristic landscape, which originally comprised large stretches of subtropical forests. The official crest and flag of Campinas show a phoenix, referring to the city s rebirth in the 18 th century after a devastating epidemic of yellow fever killed a quarter of its inhabitants. Nowadays, Campinas is known for its coffee, which is exported in many parts of the world as well as for being the native town of the opera composer Carlos Gomes. With its large variety of theatres, an opera house and its own philharmonic orchestra, Campinas is well worth a visit for anyone who loves art, culture and the typical Latin American charm. This AIMS programme is implemented with great support and partnership of the Brazilian College of Radiology and Bracco.
