2 For Advanced Trainees & Consultants FIVE DAY TRAINING COURSE ON ENDOBRONCHIAL ULTRASOUND This course will involve practice with both high fidelity EBUS models (Accutouch- standard and EBUS modules), and a range of actual needling and biopsy models including the newest bronchoscopy navigation models. A full EBUS bronchoscopic and processor set-up will be available. Practical sessions will be supported by a teaching program focused on anatomy and tips for good procedures. Also available will be two virtual bronchoscopic CT navigation systems, both as an anatomy teaching aide and a practice assistant. Ample scope is made for equipment familiarisation. Attendees will also receive coaching on basic bronchoscopy technique. To compliment hands-on practice attendees will observe four bronchoscopy lists during the week where EBUS-TBNA and EBUS Guide Sheath are regularly performed, both as conscious sedation and GA procedures. (At these lists only observation is possible). ABOUT THE COURSE Our first course was in February We have since run a further 8 courses with a median number of 5 attendees at each course ensuring plenty of one-on-one coaching. This course has a focus on applying the principles of bronchoscopy training as espoused by the World Association of Bronchology affiliated Bronchoscopy International. This organisation of bronchoscopy experts has developed a standardised set of teaching tools which are being applied world wide to enable uniformity of basic and advanced bronchoscopic teaching. These ideas are developed in the website Bronchoscopy.org. Accordingly our course uses internationally recognised testing tools such as EBUS-STAT[1]. These tests are done on the last morning and allow direct numerical feedback to all attendees. Mannequin training and hands-on assessment are rapidly gaining acceptance as the gold standard in training, and are encouraged before commencing practice[2]. The EBUS-STAT includes observation of skills on mannequins as well as interpretation of CT scan and EBUS data. See the graph which shows results for the attendees to date. As per the recent publication, EBUS-STAT scores for novice, intermediate (20-50 procedures) and advanced proceduralists were <50, 50-80, and >80 respectively. The majority of attendees have not had a lot of EBUS experience before attending (over half have never done any EBUS before) and results show that most have at least an intermediate level of skill when they complete the course, at least on the mannequins.

3 EBUS STAT RESULTS POST COURSE SCORE OUT OF INDIVIDUALS A similar test modified from the BRONCHUS STAT [3] is used for EBUS guide sheath. In addition pre and post course tests are done specifically on bronchoscopic anatomy as well as manual bronchoscopic dexterity using previously published methods[4].resulsts are shown in the graph: PRE AND POST COURSE ANATOMY RESULTS PERCENT PRE COURSE POST COURSE Live demonstration cases allow direct questioning of proceduralists real-time. Attendees stay in the practice area and view the cases on high band-width monitors. Most courses would have 10 cases during the week, a mixture of EBUS-TBNA and guide sheath. The 4 days of practice allow plenty of time to use both low fidelity models including needling of nodes as well as high fidelity with Accutouch.
