1 Progress SPRING 2018 A Heartfelt Black & Red With Tony Award-winning actress and singer Idina Menzel as the headline entertainment and learning hands-only CPR as the message to the community, the 27th annual Black & Red netted more than $1.1 million to benefit the Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute. Nearly 1,100 guests mingled through The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in celebration of the history and future of the institute on January 27. Among the special guests was cardiothoracic surgeon Henry Low, MD, who performed the first successful heart transplant in Connecticut at Hartford Hospital Henry Low, MD, and Wei Low nearly 34 years ago. Today the Heart & Vascular Institute continues to be a national leader in heart disease prevention, treatment, and research. Funds raised through the Black & Red will be used to further the institute s mission of delivering the highest quality patient outcomes in three core disciplines: cardiology, vascular surgery, and cardiac surgery. Hartford Hospital is especially grateful to the event s Premier Sponsor, Dell EMC; Marquee Sponsor, The Hartford; and Leadership Sponsors, All Waste Inc., Travelers, and United Technologies. A special guest at the gala, Leigh Pechillo, right, shared her story of the lifesaving care she received at Hartford Hospital after suffering a heart attack on Mother s Day in Her daughter, Allie, is on the left. From left: Elliot Joseph, chief executive officer, Hartford HealthCare; Bimal Patel, president, Hartford Hospital and Hartford Region, and senior vice president, Hartford HealthCare; Sabet Hashim, MD, chairman of cardiac surgery and co-physician-in-chief, Heart & Vascular Institute; Mariane Carna, RN, system vice president, Heart & Vascular Institute; Jeffrey Flaks, president and chief operating officer, Hartford HealthCare; and Paul Thompson, MD, co-physician-in-chief, Heart & Vascular Institute. 2 Hands-Only CPR The gala was also an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of hands-only CPR and Hartford HealthCare s Be A Lifesafer campaign. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops and can no longer pump blood to the brain or vital organs. According to the American Heart Association, about 40 people each hour have a cardiac arrest while not in a hospital, and just over nine out of 10 do not survive. Most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work, or in a public location die because they don't receive immediate CPR at the scene. The American Heart Association ( AHA) and Hartford HealthCare s Be A Lifesafer campaign are encouraging bystanders to learn hands-only CPR and take action. Every minute that goes by that a person s heart is not circulating blood gives them a ten percent increased chance of dying or being left with severe neurological deficits, cardiologist Paul Thompson, MD, co-physician-in-chief of the Heart & Vascular Institute, told NBC CT. 10 minutes is a long time. That s almost a 100 percent chance that that person is not going to do well. One of things that s new about [hands-only CPR] is not breathing for the patient. The pumping of the chest moves enough air to keep air circulating through the lungs and through the body. It s so important for people to know how to do this and to start it. The AHA recommends CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse at home, at work, in a park, or any out-of-hospital setting. Immediate hands-only CPR can triple a person's chance of survival in the event of cardiac arrest. One easy way to know you re giving the right number of compressions is to push to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute. A Laerdal representative helps a guest at the gala try his CPR technique on a mannequin. Hands-Only CPR in two easy steps: Call (or send someone to do that). Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Sportscaster Joe D'Ambrosio and Rebecca Stewart, director, content marketing, Hartford HealthCare, were the hosts of NBC Connecticut's live broadcast from the Black & Red. From left: Hartford HealthCare Chief Executive Officer Elliot Joseph and Carolyn Joseph; Hartford Hospital President Bimal Patel and Falguni Patel; Lori Flaks and Hartford HealthCare President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Flaks. Idina Menzel entertained a full house with a night of song, including her hit "Let It Go" from the Disney movie Frozen. Visit Hartford HealthCare s website CPRLifesavers.org, where you can learn more about hands-only CPR and register for a CPR class. 2 HARTFORD HOSPITAL PROGRESS / WINTER 2018 HARTFORD HOSPITAL PROGRESS / WINTER 2018
