The need for palliative and end of life care is changing, with increasing demands and complexity. Therefore there is a corresponding rise in the need for education and training. Education and professional development is part of the Hospice s core business and using our experience and expertise to develop others is fundamental to our work. As a lead education provider we aim to promote the highest quality palliative and end of life care for everyone through the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes. We are pleased to offer a range of study days and courses to help your development. You will find a selection of learning opportunities that address many aspects of clinical, communication and care issues. In essence the 6Cs of care, compassion, competence, courage, communication and commitment are reflected throughout. You will see the following pages identify the subject or skill, who the course/study is for and what will be learned. We also offer tailor-made training for you and your organisation and these can be delivered either at our Education and Research Centre or at your place of work. 4 ST HELENA HOSPICE BESPOKE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND FACILITIES SEPTEMBER JULY 2015 ST HELENA HOSPICE UNIVERSITY ACCREDITED COURSES SEPTEMBER JULY 2015 Bespoke training opportunities and facilities Facilities and room hire The Education and Research Centre at St Helena Hospice is a self-contained, purpose built facility to meet the needs of all types of conferences and meetings. The venue offers a range of rooms with flexibility and comfort in mind. The rooms have air conditioning and plenty of natural daylight creating the perfect environment for meetings and teaching. Rooms are available for hire separately or if required the full venue can be booked. We offer a wide range of light refreshments and all food is home cooked. Special dietary requirements can be catered for. There is also a self-contained lecture room available for hire at our Tendring Day Centre in Clacton. and Research Centre is an Associate College of Anglia Ruskin University. This partnership is long-standing and well established and offers the student all of the benefits of a specialist, intimate learning environment, as well as the support from the facilities the University has to offer. Because the Education and Research Centre is located at the heart of palliative care practice, our courses benefit from the expertise of both academic staff and members of our multi-disciplinary specialist care team. All the elements are in place for education to be a stimulating, valuable and supportive experience. You can access our degree level modules in palliative care, studying for either the BSc (Hons) in Palliative Care, or for individual stand alone modules. We also offer masters level study in the form of optional modules on the MSc in Advanced Practice. For further information and booking details, please call the Education and Research Centre on or visit Individualised programmes We are able to organise bespoke programmes, commissioned for your organisation which can be delivered at the Education and Research Centre or in your own place of work. Library services The library is located within the Education and Research Centre and is one of the largest palliative care libraries in the country. It houses a multi disciplinary collection of materials on all aspects of palliative care, including resources on bereavement to support work with children and young people. The library contains a collection of nearly 4,000 books and a large collection of specialist journals, as well as a collection of significant articles and audio-visual material. The library is open Monday to Thursday, and Friday, During this time, our library manager is available to assist you. Free membership is available to everyone subject to approval. Within the library there are study areas with internet access, photocopying facilities, and a relaxed reading room. Commendation The support provided by our library, and library manager Candy Welch, has received a commendation from a 2014 institutional review conducted by Anglia Ruskin University. Facing death: patients, families and professionals MOD (level 6) MOD (level 7) Within the context of a changing demographic society, this module aims to give students a detailed insight into the needs of patients and families facing death, and of professionals providing care. The 6 C s of care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment will be threaded throughout. The module addresses loss and bereavement and explores counselling theory and communication skills and its impact on patients, families and professional carers. The management of pain and symptoms is central to effective palliative care. The module will provide students with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of effective pain and symptom relief strategies. This will include pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches within a multi-disciplinary setting. The concept of total pain will be considered with the associated notion of suffering. Use of opioid analgesia in palliative care Management of nausea and vomiting Holistic assessment and symptom assessment Management of refractory symptoms Total pain Completion of a competency portfolio (level 6). Completion of 6 clinical protocols (level 7). This module explores developmental issues in the child s concept of loss and grief, factors influencing bereavement outcomes in children and the role of social networks in the support of the grieving child. The module aims to enable the student to critically analyse what grieving means for a child in the light of a range of literature, evaluate the factors which may give rise to problematic grief in the child, reflect upon the systems of support and identify the practitioner s own ability to offer appropriate support to the bereaved child. Level: 6 September December (Tuesdays) Kate Powis Delivering compassion: spiritual care of the person MOD (level 6) Research methodology, design and process MOD (level 6) Level: 6 January April (Wednesdays) Kate Powis This module aims to critically examine the notion of spirituality, and to distinguish it from religion. The multiple dimensions of spiritual care will be examined and the role of spiritual assessment interrogated. Accomplishing these tasks will require students to reflect on their own self-care and spiritual resources. The nature of suffering and its impact on personhood, the role of story and meaning making will also be considered. Dimensions of spirituality/personal spirituality Caring for the spirit the importance of relationship Narrative healing in the face of death Engaging with/assessing spiritual wellbeing The grace and hope in dying Suffering 6000 word essay focusing on an invented case study selected by the student. This module will revisit existing knowledge of the research process and assist the student in further developing skills of critical analysis. In addition, students will have the opportunity to appraise the ethical dimensions of research studies. The ambiguities and limits of knowledge Research methodologies and processes Qualitative and quantitative research in the context of palliative care Data analysis and the evaluation of rigour, reliability and validity Research governance and ethical considerations Evaluation and application of research 3000 word essay comparing two pieces of original research on a palliative care topic, one using a quantitative research methodology and one qualitative. Students are required to make explicit connections between module content, private study and practice to meet learning outcomes. The module is rooted within specialist palliative care and has relevance for practice development Understanding and exploring factual knowledge in palliative care Application of research in clinical practice Taking responsibility in practice Initiating and implementing protocols, policies and care pathways Politics of advocacy in specialist practice 6000 word assignment incorporating narratives of specialist practice. Principles of palliative care MOD (level 6) Introduction to palliative and end of life care MOD (level 5) This inter-professional module explores the students own learning needs in relation to communication issues. Students reflect upon the importance of good communication and explore the theory of communication in complex situations. The module involves every student in participatory workshops where they will have the opportunity to practise and critically review their micro-skills in a safe environment. This will enable them to develop reflexivity and increased self awareness in relation to their own performance. Palliative care is an integral part of every health care professional s role. It is the holistic care of the patient with advanced life limiting illness. This module explores the principles of palliative care providing students with the framework from which to assess, plan, and deliver holistic care at the end of life as part of an inter-professional team. 7 ST HELENA HOSPICE SHORT COURSE STUDY DAYS SEPTEMBER JULY 2015 ST HELENA HOSPICE SHORT COURSE STUDY DAYS SEPTEMBER JULY 2015 Oncology update for palliative care Study days Our short course study days provide an opportunity to focus on a specific aspect of palliative care and aim to provide education which will appeal to a wide range of people. Some of our courses are designed for health care professionals, others towards a wider audience. They provide an opportunity to underpin practice with learning and to network with others in a relaxed environment. Our courses are priced competitively and we believe provide value for money. However, we appreciate in some circumstances people may be inhibited from attending due to the cost. If you are a student, on a low income or finding it difficult to meet the cost, please contact us to discuss possible concessionary rates. Reduced rates are also available for multiple bookings. This education prospectus is available on the St Helena Hospice website and additional courses/ study days are likely to be added later on during the year. Please check the website for these additions. This one day course is aimed at experienced members of the multidisciplinary team, medical, nursing and allied health professionals working in the field of palliative care and GPs with a specific interest in palliative care/oncology. Date: 18 th September 2014 Time: Fee: 50 Chair: Dr Kate Powis Key note speaker: Barbara Pointon MBE, (former carer, Patron of Dementia UK) Who is the conference recommended for? For all staff who have a responsibility for caring for people with dementia. It is pertinent to medical, nursing, social and allied health care staff working across a variety of settings. We hope that by encouraging conversations between different professions this will enhance care that respects the rights and voices of people with dementia and their loved ones. Summary of the contents of the day The day will be an opportunity to explore the theme of dementia care from the perspective of what it is like to live with and/or care for someone with dementia. Speakers will be exploring the challenges in maintaining the personhood of those with dementia throughout the illness, across a variety of care settings: at home, in acute care and in residential homes. The morning will conclude with a speakers /clinicians panel, responding to questions and discussion from the audience. The afternoon will consist of a workshop format in which groups of delegates can network and consider ways of incorporating what has been heard into their own clinical practice. Any health and social care professional involved in caring for the oldest members of our society at the end of their lives. Today s older people are the vanguard of an extraordinary revolution in longevity that is radically changing the structure of society and altering our perceptions of life and death (Kitwood 1999) Are the palliative care needs of this demographic group different? The day focuses on basic communication skills, and through an interactive format aims to build your knowledge and confidence in order to communicate more effectively with those you are caring for. Increasingly professionals are required to engage in challenging conversations over the telephone due to the upsurge in advice services, follow up clinics and triage conducted by phone.
