2 Dear Colleague, Welcome to the FOCUS Fall 2018 Conference (also fondly known and celebrating the occasion of the 39th annual Michael Aiello Memorial Respiratory Care & Sleep Medicine Conference), at the beautiful Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. For 2018, we ve compiled ten interesting and pertinent lectures for respiratory therapists and 10 lectures for sleep technologists all being presented by some of the profession s most esteemed speakers. The cost of this annual conference is amongst the lowest in the country and a fun experience, as it has been for 38 years. The topics are pertinent and were all chosen to enable attendees to take practical information back to their respective health care settings. The conference will also feature exhibitors presenting the latest in equipment and services. Drop by their booths to see their products and enter the raffles many of them will be holding. Of course, in addition to being an educational forum, let us not overlook the social aspects of what has become an annual Fall tradition. The early discounted registration deadline is September 20, Registration after September 20, 2018 and at the door, is available for an additional $50 fee. Register early to ensure your place and to save money. Note our military and student discounts and take advantage of them if they apply to you. Because of non-refundable commitments made to the hotel, NO refunds will be made after September 20, 2018, for any reason. Cancellations made before September 20, 2018 will be assessed a $25 processing fee. DOOR PRIZES Focus Conferences are well known for their door prizes throughout the day. 6 SEMINAR FACULTY Dan Chipman BS RRT Dan Chipman is a veteran registered therapist and the Assistant Director of Respiratory Care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In addition to over 40 years of clinical experience in adult, pediatric and neonatal respiratory care, Dan has extensive experience in classroom and practical clinical education. He has been involved in original research and administration at Massachusetts General. He lectures nationally and internationally and has co-authored numerous book chapters and papers on various aspects of Respiratory Care in scientific journals. Ruben Restrepo MD RRT FAARC FACCP Ruben Restrepo is a Professor in the Department of Respiratory Care at the University of Texas in San Antonio. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care and of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is also a member of the editorial board for the professional journals Respiratory Care and The World Journal of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Restrepo also served as the past Chairman of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the AARC. He has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. Catherine Kier MD is the immediate past-president of the of the Association of Asthma Educators and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the State University of New York (SUNY) School of Medicine in Stoney Brook, New York. Dr. Kier is a certified asthma educator and the Division Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at the Stony Brook Children s Hospital. She is also the Director of the Cystic Fibrosis and Sleep Disorder s centers at Stony Brook Children s Hospital. Dr. Steven Thau MD graduated from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in Bronx New York. He completed his post graduate training at the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship training in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Yale University Hospital. He is board certified in four specialties: Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He is now the Pulmonary and Sleep Director at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow NY. Joseph Sorbello M.Ed RRT Joseph Sorbello has been an RRT for 40+ years; the last 25 of which, have been as an educator. Joseph is recently retired as the Chairman & Associate Professor in the Department of Respiratory Therapy Education at SUNY Medical University in Syracuse NY. He is the immediate past-chairman of the AARC s Education Section and is an immediate pastmember of the AARC Board of Directors. He is also a Past President and was a 14 year Board member of the NYSSRC. Kathryn Hansen R EEGT CPC Kathryn Hansen is a senior advisor with the Sleep Center Management Institute in Atlanta Georgia and President of the Sleep Education Services Institute in Atlanta Georgia and Lexington Kentucky. She is also the Executive Director of the Kentucky Sleep Society and has worked academically as well as clinically as Director of the Sleep Center at St. Joseph Healthcare in Lexington Kentucky. She is a member of the adjunct faculty with the Kentucky Community and Technical College system. Kathryn specializes in presentations that focus on the business aspects of running successful sleep laboratories. 6
