2 King of Prussia Charitable Foundation Donations $250 Donation to Light of Marnie - The Light of Marnie is a philanthropic organization that funds humanitarian programs in the United States and abroad. Although they are dedicated to creating a quality education and a safe place for every child we reach, Liberia (West Africa) is our primary objective. Because of the war, there was no schooling in most parts of this country. The Liberian education system was destroyed during the 14-year civil conflict. Our donation will help the program carry on for 2018 and enabling the children in Liberia to get a basic education, having the sanitary means within their school day and to get a drink of safe, clean water. $1000 Donation to Upper Merion Senior Center - The Upper Merion Senior Center has been serving the 55 and older community for almost 21 years. They are an active senior center that offers its members physical, recreational and educational activities. One of these activities is for members to play an instrument in their 20 plus member band. The band performs at many local community events such as the fall fling, the Center s holiday party and the township tree lighting ceremony, to name a few. Until recently, their band was recipients of a grant that covered their musical program expense which is approximately $5000 annually. Unfortunately that grant has reached its maturity and is no longer available. Our Foundation s donation will go towards the support of the band s needs to continue performing. **************************************************************** Ways to Support our Charitable Efforts Our efforts continue to help raise money for the three foundations we support and benefit from for our charitable ways. Still time for you to make a contribution to: The King of Prussia Rotary Foundation Our Club s Foundation which make our donations to local national and international groups and projects possible. The Gundaker Foundation Our District s Foundation which helps us match donations for projects or goups (Such as matching donations for 2 additional students (4 total from Upper Merion High School) or matching donations for the purchase of trees at the Paul Harris Memorial Grove in VFNHP) The Rotary Foundation Rotary International s Foundation which allows for all kinds of opportunities on many levels. This is how we are able to do global projects in India, Mexico and Argentina! You can choose several different funs for your donation to go too, including End Polio Now. 3 Taste of the Suburbs The Taste of the Suburbs was held Sunday, April 15, 2018 at the King of Prussia Mall. Thank you to all involved who helped make this event successful. We had 30 vendors again this year some returning again to help us and some new to the event. We were joined by the Kohl s Employees again who supported us for the third year in a row by volunteering their time to help at our event. We will have totals on attendance, raffles and overall funds raised when the info is all calculated. Special Thanks, again, to the King of Prussia Mall and Simon for their continued help and support in making our event successful! Page 3

4 SASY AWARDS Congrats to the King of Prussia Rotary Club who were the recipients of s 2018 SASY (Service Above Self) Award for best Social Media and Public Relations Club. The awards were presented by the District on April 20, 2018 at the Springfield Country Club. President Bill Miller was on hand to receive the award. In addition, both John Alfonse and Carl Pinto were nominees in the category of Lifetime Achievement. This is the second time the SASY Awards have been held by the district in the last 3 years (Nov 2015 in DG Rosenberg s year) and are an unique way fellow Rotarians can nominate and recognize the hard work and service above self dedication of their fellow club members in various categories. The categories include individual or club achievement in projects, grants or service. Also, a shout out to our very own Kevin Katarynick who co-hosted the awards with PDG Russ defuria and announcer Lisa Leonard. Page 4

5 WEEKEND OF SERVICE The weekend of April 21 and 22 was a busy weekend for The King of Prussia Rotary Club and District On Saturday, April 21 st, while the District Conference was in full swing at the Doubletree King of Prussia, President Bill Miller and Past President Kevin Katarynick joined DG Dawn defuria and Tree Planting Coordinator Doug Klepfer as the District was recognized by Upper Merion Township Park and Rec at their Earth Day Celebration for the efforts in the Tree Planting Service Project that was being held by Rotary at Bob White Park on April 22, On Sunday, April 22, Frank Nolan and Bill Miller helped park vehicles at the annual Valley Forge Revolutionary 5 Mile Run to help benefit visitor services at VFNHP. Sunday afternoon Rotarians and volunteers from all over came to help plant 80 trees at Bob White Park in Upper Merion. It was humbling to see the outreach of so many from other clubs as far as Lansdowne and of course Japan who donated financially spent their time and money to help US restore some of our environment and plant trees in our town. Channel 10 news was out and conducted some interviews from the Ardmore and Conshohocken Rotary Clubs that came out in force. Page 5

6 Welcome our newest Rotarian Congratulations to Scott Thatcher of Honey Brook, who was inducted on Monday, April 30 th as our newest Rotarian. Scott is an Arborist Representative with Bartlett Tree Experts since 2005, where he evaluates and recommends treatments, pruning or removal of trees and shrubs. He is a graduate of Penn State University and his personal interests including hunting, skiing, hiking and orienteering. Scott has attended several meetings in the past month or so and was recommended for membership at the April board meeting. Welcome to the club Scott! Page 6
