2 A Snake's Eye View - 20th May What You May Have Missed... Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a DG (District Governor)? Last Tuesday we heard from Alan Stephens, who is currently the immediate Past District Governor for our district - albeit only for another month now! Alan spoke about the 4 year journey that involves the transition from a nominee, to the DG elect year, the DG year and the Pst DG year. He gave us a sense of the hard work and dedication that is involved in the timeline toward taking up the role, and reinforced that the DG position was not there to tell clubs how to run, but more-so to assist in resolving issues and challenges that clubs may have. Of course, Alan was also able to share his insights into the best moments of the role. He loved (and still does) visiting clubs to see all of the unique projects that are underway throughout the District's communities and encourages members to get themselves to another Rotary club on occasion to be able to see this for themselves. He also highly commends the International Conferences as this affords the opportunity to see just how diverse Rotary is throughout the world. Anyone need their bags carried to Hamburg next year? 3 A Snake's Eye View - 20th May Club Visit On the 22nd of May members of the Caboolture Rotary Club are invited to attend the Interact Meeting at St Columban's College. If you're interested in attending, please Jan. We'll meet in the back carpark at 11am (entry via Pettigrew St), and Jan will escort us to the meeting venue. Committee Corner The Youth Committee have now visited all schools to promote a local Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program, and feedback so far has been very positive. So far three schools have sent through letters of support, and it is anticipated that others will follow. BBQ Bits... Many thanks to those who helped out at the recent BBQ on the 10th of May - we managed to raise $790 in profit on the day. Further to this, some members backed this up with a last minute BBQ on the 16th - a mammoth effort that is testament to the commitment of so many among our wonderful club! A further $620 was raised - so a big thank-you to those who were able to contribute to this!
4 A Snake's Eye View - 20th May Out and About! Leon Misfeld, and Peter Brown with Fran Manning at the St Columban's Open Day. Needless to say, I was a little light on photos this week! Golf Day Wrap Many thanks to the Golf Day helpers on the 11th of May! The day went very well, with the committee reporting a profit of around $4,500. We received some wonderful feedback from our teams, and look forward to this event in 2019.
5 A Snake's Eye View - 20th May Spotlight on... Growing Local Economies As the old adage goes: give someone a fish and you'll feed them for a day; teach someone to fish and you'll feed them for life. One of the major causes that Rotary supports is that of growing local economies. This is achieved through various means - though rather than simply providing handouts to communities, the focus is on building agricultural and entrepreneurial skills that will allow for a continued positive and sustainable contribution within any given community. While purchasing power varies greatly from country to country, I'm sure we can all agree that $1.90 per person per day anywhere in the world is not enough to get by on, yet too many people are still faced with this reality today. The Rotary Foundation aims to address this gap through the following measures: Providing microloans to entrepreneurs in rural communities to assist them in establishing businesses Training in sustainable agricultural practices and loans to purchase livestock or crops Adopting villages in order to break the poverty cycle Building awareness of human rights to overcome prejudice in relation to those in the community that may appear different or have a disability, yet who can still contribute greatly within their community The long-term view taken in these acts is the difference between charity and advocacy, and isn't that a wonderful thing to celebrate? Have something important to say? Articles, Community Event notices and photographs are always welcome - please e- mail any submissions through to Heather Depasquale. Please keep any articles to 2-3 paragraphs long. Next Deadline: 1st of June

7 A Snake's Eye View - 20th May Membership Minute One of the most powerful memories that I have of attending my father's Rotary meetings in my youth was that of the fines that were issued to members for seemingly trivial and sometimes hilarious "offences". Leon Misfeld has recently revived this tradition at our meetings, and this has added a dimension of enjoyment from those who both were and were not fined (the latter: an incredibly rare commodity!) This is the kind of thing that builds morale and creates interest among guests and new members of the club, while allowing the club to raise additional funds towards its goals. Do you know about... The Umoja Project? One of our past guest speakers, Cathy Booth, has ed through an update of the Umoja Orphanage Project that is proudly supported by the Sunrise Rotary Club in Bundaberg. Construction has recently commenced on a second children's home in Kenya, There are currently several fundraising initiatives underway that support this project - from a 1:1 donation matching scheme supported by the Bircher Bar, to a raffle for 7 days accommodation in a 2 Bedroom apartment at the Gold Coast (only $5 per ticket - Drawn June 30), to a fundraising dinner hosted by the Mitchelton Rotary Club (on the 18th of June): if you'd like to learn more or support this worthy cause, please check out the following link: Umoja Orphanage Fundraising Keep Smiling! Until next time folks...
