7 2016: Significant Events The VP1 sequencing analysis shows the two Myanmar isolates are closely related to the O/ME-SA/India-2001d viruses recovered in Nepal in 2015 and 2016 This indicates at least two independent incursions of the O/ME-SA/India-2001d strain occurred in SEA

8 2016: Significant Epidemiological Events Where did it come from??? Are there animals from Bangladesh into this township/village? Close to livestock markets? Close to slaughter house? Animal traders living in the village? Close to animal movement pathways (main road)? Importation of animal products (meat, tongue, milk, offal, semen, etc) from Bangladesh or India There were no movement of animals from Bangladesh into this township/village. There is no livestock market in Maungdaw Township. No close to slaughter house Animal s traders are not live in this village. No No importation of animal products, but Rakhine tribe people who former live in Bangladesh move to Maungdaw and currently live in Kaingyi and Chanpyin and they still connection with people from Bangladesh. Bingarli people also visit and come back Bangladesh and Maungdaw.

10 Strain Characterization Commitment to submit all outbreak samples for strain characterization to RL Pakchong All Myanmar outbreak samples from 2016 submitted to RRL Pak Chong for strain characterization

11 Passive Surveillance FMD is a reportable disease in Myanmar by law Township veterinarians obligated to report FMD immediately and submit Epithelial samples to Yangon FMD Diagnostic Lab FMD Information and Awareness Seminars: Improve field veterinarians understanding of FMD FMD Farmer Awareness Campaign conducted in 2017 to promote reporting amongst stakeholders

13 Active Surveillance FMD Baseline Survey Central Myanmar 2017 Why? Central Myanmar is animal production center of Myanmar 1. Develop a Baseline of FMD exposure in central Myanmar 2. Develop practical and effective control strategies against FMD 3. Guide decision making for risk based vaccination (i.e. high and low risk epidemiological units) 4. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the FMD control project (reduction in prevalence and incidence of FMD) *Results currently being analyzed at the National FMD Laboratory in Nay Pyi Taw

15 Strengthening National FMD BSL-2 Lab to support FMD surveillance in Myanmar Recruitment of New lab staff to support FMD diagnosis at the National FMD Lab Training of these staff supported by NZ and Australia National Animal Health Laboratories in February, 2017 Training of staff in China on diagnosis of TADs in February, 2017 Continued and sustained partner support needed to assist in operationalizing the lab (e.g. FMD diagnosis training, lab management)

16 Challenges and Ways Forward Reporting and sample submission can still be improved in order to better understand current circulating strains in Myanmar Surveillance activities are costly Lack of sustainable research activities Extend surveillance activities to all parts of the country Opportunity to strengthen the FMD laboratory network

17 Summary Myanmar is a FMD endemic country and outbreaks have occurred in all parts of the country in yearly. The outbreaks are mainly dominated by FMD serotype O. In 2015 and 2016, Significant epidemiology events of isolation of A/ASIA/Sea-97 and O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d were occurred. Farmer awareness is critical to all surveillance programs. FMD surveillance activities will continue to be enhanced into the future with the support of partners.
