Get a perspective on starting a program, living on campus with clients, choosing horses and handling counselors. Rachel Lopez Connelly started volunteering in therapeutic riding 11 years ago and became a PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor in She has worked for some of the best programs in the New York region including Horsablity, Pony Power, Full Circle Equine Assisted Activities and now as the PATH Intl. Program Coordinator at Therapeutic Equestrian Center, Inc., in Cold Spring, NY. She has also been certified as an equine specialist with EAGALA since A2 What Works for Your PATH Intl. Center For many nonprofits, collaboration and competition are a copper penny with two different sides. Public and private funding make nonprofits compete where they most certainly would rather collaborate on joint events and programs. What are the patterns among collaborative activities for nonprofits and for-profit entities? Which really work? What works for your PATH Intl. Center? Bring examples of your favorite databases. Ann Miles has advanced degrees in counseling and administration. Her doctoral studies included research on inclusionary practices for minority children. Non-violent patterns of behavior that are inclusionary remain her most important legacy. Bringing for-profit and nonprofit organizations together for a common goal should make sense. Ann currently works with numerous agencies developing programs: scouts, recreation departments, adult education, early education. She is most concerned with young adults who age out of the secondary educational system. A3 The Importance of Attachment in Therapeutic Horseback Riding This session will provide an overview of the material related to attachment and a theoretical background for those unfamiliar with attachment theory. There will also be self-reflective time to think about personal attachment styles, how they may vary with different people in our lives, and how they might affect our work with clients and horses. Break-out groups, in which participants will evaluate different scenarios and talk about how attachment is playing a role in the interactions that are occurring, will also be included. Lauren Weisberg is a doctoral student at Antioch University New England s Clinical Psychology PsyD program, as well as a PATH Intl. Instructor-in-Training. Lauren has always been passionate about the mental health field and now is pursuing ways to further integrate the field of therapeutic horseback riding and the more traditional aspects of psychological intervention. 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Break 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Session B B1 Equine-Facilitated Mental Health for Veterans With PTSD - Part 1 Discuss the benefits of equine-facilitated mental health for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Gain insight into experiences in working with veterans who have PTSD. As well, there will be an emphasis on the emergence of equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) as a new treatment modality with specific techniques. Jennifer Tevlin became a PATH Intl.Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning in February 2013 and a PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor in December Jenni holds bachelor of science and master of science degrees in animal science with a specialization in equine science from Rutger s University as well as a master of science degree in psychological counseling from Monmouth University. Jenni is a licensed associate counselor and a national certified counselor. Jenni started with Special People United to Ride, Inc. (SPUR) 2

5 as a volunteer in 2010 and joined the PATH Intl. Instructor-in- Training program in Jenni is passionate about the field of animal-assisted therapy and is excited to expand SPUR s existing EAAT offerings through her current role as director of special programs. Jackie West holds the position of head instructor at Sunnyside Equestrian Center. Jackie started her career at Sunnyside as a volunteer in She became a PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor in June 2011 and a PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Heath and Learning in August Her main goal is to assist Sunnyside in creating the type of therapeutic programs that will best serve our community. Jackie s lifelong experience with horses has proven to be an essential asset in developing EAAT. B2 A Multicenter Approach to Measuring Therapeutic Riding Program Impact: Results of a Feasibility Study See how four therapeutic riding centers are building an accountability system that incorporates measurements of impact on participants in horsemanship and supporting skills. TRAIN is building systems of accountability that better inform our stakeholders about the progress made by our program participants and will hopefully lead to better understanding the benefits of therapeutic riding. Catherine Smith Hybels, PhD, is a research consultant whose work involves studies of organizational effectiveness and use of current, best evidence in management and decisionmaking. In addition to her work with nonprofits, Cathy has been a consultant for many of the largest healthcare industry organizations. She received her doctorate from Cornell University and was project consultant on three previous TR outcomes assessment pilot studies at High Horses Therapeutic Riding Program, a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center in Norwich, VT, as well as a volunteer in the ring. Sue Miller, Lorna Young and Liz Adams B3 Utilizing ABA in the EAAT Setting The objective of this presentation is to broaden the understanding of applied behavior analysis/behavioral approach principles and to introduce participants to the basics of ABA tools including: ABA as an approach to autism; definition of behavior; conditioning; positive reinforcement; negative reinforcement; extinction; and the Antecedent Behavior Consequence (ABC) model and other strategies. With Q&A. Karolina LaBrecque holds a PhD degree in physical rehabilitation and an MS degree in psychology. She has more than 20 years of horse experience and more than 10 years of hippotherapy and therapeutic riding experience. Karolina holds PATH Intl. and CHA certifications in the United States and hippotherapy/able body certifications in Poland. In her career as an educator and mentor, she introduced more than 300 students to the field of EAAT. Besides involvement in the horse world, she is an international speaker, life coach and psychology adjunct professor at the local college. 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Lunch With PATH Intl. Update 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Session C C1 Lungeing Demystified: Best Practices for a Variety of Purposes - Part 1 There are many reasons to lunge a horse: training, schooling, energy management, interactive vaulting and rider skill development. This presentation will include a discussion of the pyramid of training, setting goals for the lungeing session, exercises for safe equipment handling and evaluation methods for a wide range of equipment and training strategies for challenging horses. Liz Capalbo attended St. Andrews University and majored in therapeutic horsemanship program management. A PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor and Interactive Vaulting Instructor, Liz became the head instructor at Bit by Bit in Oologah, OK for two years before returning to her home state of Rhode Island. In 2014, she opened Gaits of Harmony Therapeutic Riding in Saunderstown, RI, where she is the program director/founder and teaches therapeutic riding and interactive vaulting. C2 Choosing Words With Dignity How do you refer to the participants you work with at your center? Wheelchair bound vs. uses a wheel chair? Equine professionals are careful about how they refer to their horses; however, they do not always know how to best refer to their participants. Disability is part of the human experience. Attendees will leave with new insight on how their words affect people with disabilities as well as community members. They will also have new tools in their tool box to use in the arena as well as community when speaking with and about people with disabilities. Kristen McGraw, a PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor, Driving Instructor Level II and Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning, has been involved in therapeutic riding and driving since She is currently the program director at UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center, a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center in Goffstown, NH. Kristen served as the PATH Intl. New Hampshire State Chair from , the Region 1 Representative from , a Driving Committee member from 2007 through 2011 serving as the chair from In 2012, Kristen received the PATH Intl. Certified Professional of the Year Award for Region 1. Kristen was appointed to sit on the Developmental Disabilities Council in October of 2011 and currently serves as the chair of the council. Nicole Tucker was a founding member of the state Youth for Education Advocacy and Healthcare Council in an effort to engage youth in selfadvocacy. She is also a council member of Patient and Family Advisory Council to improve the patient experience. Nicole is a recipient of The Champions Among Children Award 2009 and Volunteer of the Year award signed by President Obama in 2010, 2011 and Both Kristen and Nicole are graduates from the NH Institute on Disability Leadership Series. 3

6 C3 Moving from Unmounted Horsemanship to EFL The presentation will focus on how to provide quality unmounted horsemanship and equine-facilitated learning and understanding the key differences between these services. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to provide these services in a safe, quality manner; assess skills needed by staff (ESMHL) and educators or mental health professionals; selecting appropriate activities; determining your resources; considerations when selecting horses; and considerations when selecting volunteers. Jeanna Pellino is a PATH Intl. Certified Advanced Instructor, Associate Evaluator, Mentor and Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning. She has an associate degree in human services and therapeutic recreation and is the program director at Hidden Acres Therapeutic Riding Center in Naugatuck, CT. Rebecca Caruso is an LCSW and PATH Intl. Certified Registered Instructor at Hidden Acres Therapeutic Riding Center. 3:15 to 3:30 p.m. Break 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Session D D1 How to Bring Natural Horsemanship Training and Liberty Techniques to Your Special Needs/Adaptive Program Gain simple ideas to supplement and/or start a healing program as an adjunct to your traditional therapeutic practices. Based on natural horsemanship ideas, liberty practices and mindfulness, participants of all backgrounds can benefit from the interaction and communication that the horse provides. From just spending time in a paddock setting to learning basic lungeing techniques, we can start to see the foundation of how relationships are formed between humans and horses and the benefits they offer to all. Bonnie J O Hara has been a riding instructor for more than 20 years and worked with horses from all backgrounds, helping owners develop more effective relationships with their equine partners. Her background includes sports coaching and meditation practices that she applies in training people and animals. associated with military service. The work is based on natural horsemanship techniques that foster selfregulation and modulation of energy that is both practical and magical at the same time. Neurobiologists are collaborating with those of us who do this work to better understand the hows and whys behind the impact of equine-assisted activities and therapies on the quality of life among those vets who choose to participate. We are pleased to explore and explain some of the outcomes as well as the science behind our work with you, as well as to discuss how working with veterans is different from working with individuals and groups who are interested in personal development. Jane Strong is a certified equine experiential learning instructor and trained with Linda Kohanov at Eponaquest in Tucson, AZ. She is also a member of PATH Intl. and is in the process of certifying as an ESMHL. Jane was formerly an executive coach and market research professional with a background in cultural anthropology. Her goal is to broaden awareness and understanding of approaches to working with veterans so that more PATH Intl. centers can offer it as a part of their therapeutic horsemanship programs. D3 The Road to Barefoot Considering the possibility of transitioning your barn to barefoot? We will walk you through why and how to do this, with tips for success and cautions. There will be plenty of time for questions. Abby Nemec is the director of equine programs at Post University in Waterbury, CT, where she has been teaching courses in the field of equine studies since She received an undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire prior to earning her master of education degree at Post University. Her experience with horses and in the horse industry is both diverse and deep. She is a practicing farrier and has been teaching riding and horse care for 30 years, is an ARIA Certified Level III Instructor of Recreational and Distance Riding, and is an approved lay judge for the Eastern Competitive Trail Ride Association. She is a lifelong equestrian and has enjoyed many different styles of riding and competition. 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Region and State Meetings D2 Warriors In Transition: The Homestretch for Veterans When veterans return from military service, they ve barely had a chance to process their experiences. Many have been flooded with adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol stress hormones that need a chance to discharge and allow the body to return to its natural ebb and flow of energy and emotions. Working with horses has proved to be a fascinating and effective way to restore a sense of well-being, relaxation and engagement among vets who have not been able to do so with traditional modes of treatment for issues 4 5:30 p.m. Vendor and Silent Auction Close 6 to 7 p.m. Dinner on Your Own

7 SUNDAY, APRIL 19 (Sessions at Manes & Motions TRC) 8 to 9 a.m. Light Breakfast 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Session E E1 Equine-Facilitated Mental Health for Veterans With PTSD: Part 2 A follow-up demonstration of the classroom discussion. Jennifer Tevlin and Jackie West, see bios in session B1. E2 What Does This Shoe Do? This is an informative, fun and interactive session examining the purposes and effects of a variety of different types of appliances used on equine hooves, from shoes and pads to boots, casts or barefoot. Take a look into how farriers make the choices they do. Abby Nemec, see bio in session D3. 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. Break 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Session F F1 Integrated Riding: Enhancing the Mind-Body Connection for All Riders Integrated riding blends several different types of movement-based learning modalities, including Centered Riding by Sally Swift, Balance in Motion by Eckart Meyners, Brain Gym by Paul Dennison and Movement Based Learning by Cecilia Koestler. These methods of combining a series of different exercises target the physical and emotional holding patterns in the rider s body. We hold the emotional links to physical holding patterns in the body. When you release the body you release the emotions that are often connected to the trauma or experiences that cause physical pain and emotional reactions. Integrated riding targets how movements can bring awareness to the rider and help release these patterns. Judy Cross Strehlke is a lifetime rider who has been riding, teaching and training for more than 40 years. Her education is in western, Pony Club, combined training, dressage and therapeutic riding and is one of only 18 Level IV Advanced Centered Riding Clinicians in the United States and Europe. She rode for more than 25 years with Sally Swift and has a degree in equine sciences from the University of New Hampshire. Judy and her husband, Bob, have owned and operated Northern Maine Riding Adventures since 1979 which specializes in equine-facilitated mental health programs with adolescents from high-risk environments, including incarcerated youth, children in foster care, residential treatment settings and mental health agencies. Her program Adventure Challenge blends horses with a wilderness setting. Judy s own struggle with chronic back pain and incorrect habitual posture gives her a unique perspective in helping others overcome physical challenges that prevent them from achieving their riding goals. This path led her to understanding how the body learns and helped her develop the unique approach to teaching riding, which she calls integrated riding. F2 Promoting Independence at All Riding Levels One of the most valuable things that instructors can do for riders is to promote their independence. Independence may look different in every rider, and may advance to varying degrees, but in all riders increasing independence instills confidence and selfworth, facilitates a bond with the horse, and develops effective and safe riding skills. This presentation will cover how instructors can encourage riders to reach for their goals while maintaining safety at levels from beginner to advanced. Megan Ellis has been a PATH Intl. Certified Advanced Instructor since She is currently a full-time volunteer manager and instructor at High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Inc., a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center in Old Lyme, CT. She previously worked as a program director at another PAC, has a bachelor s degree in therapeutic horsemanship, is the chair of PATH International Equine Services for Heroes Committee and has previously presented at PATH Intl. and region conferences. 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Lunch 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. Session G G1 Lungeing Demystified: Best Practices for a Variety of Purposes - Part 2 A follow-up to part 1, including a demonstration of equipment selection, equipment application and best practice lungeing. Hands-on practice for attendees as resources allow. Liz Capalbo, see bio in session C1. G2 Newbie Panel Discussion Are you new to the association? Do you have questions about getting started, going through certification, establishing a program, fundraising or the day-to-day of running your center? Bring your questions to the panel. Panelists include Kathy Alm, Courtney Bernard, Leanne Hatch and Kitty Stalsburg. 2:45 p.m. Pick up certificates Thanks for coming. Have a safe drive home! 5
