1 My Time to Shine Autumn Term Issue 2 December 2017 Rugby Win in Scottish Schools Rugby Plate for Lomond and Helensburgh U18 December saw the U18s overcome Marr College in a nail biting game at Murrayfield Stadium to see them crowned winners much to our delight! It was a fabulous game and we are really proud of all the boys. In a further link with the school, the Iona Bowl, which was last awarded in 2010 orginates as a gift by Linda Pender, a Lomond School Governor, who won it age 17 as winner of the Long Island Girls Regatta. We look forward to building on this success and on our successful partnership with RNCYC in Calum Bell Shortlisted for RYA Scotland Youth Sailor of the Year 2017 Calum Bell (S5) and crew, Josh Hale, had a good start to winter training and scored a perfect set of first places across 10 races at the RYA Scotland Winter Championships in December. 4 Sporting Successes continued Lomond Enjoys Success at Indoor Rowing Competiton A squad of 19 students from Lomond School travelled to the Scottish Rowing Centre in Motherwell for the National Indoor Championships. Most of the students were new to the sport but, under the watchful coaching of James Morrison (S4) and Mark Sullivan (S6), had developed smooth techniques to go with the grit and moral determination of your typical Lomonder. In the individual competitions, Alastair McCartney (S2) fought well for his 8 th placing whilst Callum Gray (S3) started our medal haul with a fine 3 rd place finish. There was a strong representation in the S4 Boys race where Peter Crowson placed 8 th, Alex Johnson gained a bronze and James Morrison destroyed the field to gain the first of his 3 Golds. In the S6 race, Mark Sullivan and Cameron Kemp fought a terrific race for silver over 6 minutes the boys were separated by one meter! Things then really began to heat up in the relay races. The novice S2s of Alastair McCartney, Finlay Macken, Peter Swigciski and Hamish McFarlane fought a fine race to finish 5 th ; Sophie Morrison, Catherine Laverty, Amirah Hassan and Lucy McLean were shaded out of the bronze position for the S3 girls, and then the S3 boys squad of Callum Gray, Christopher Wilson, Matthew Dunn and Ewan Boswell battled to a tremendous Gold. Perhaps the 2 finest races came at the last as the S4 boys pipped Albyn School from Aberdeen in a titanic, see-saw struggle, with magnificent contributions from James Morrison, Perter Crowson, Alex Johnson and Glen The Beast Cullen. The cherry on the icing came at the last in the Open Boys race where Mark Sullivan, Cameron Kemp, James Morrison (again where did he get the energy?) and Ruairidh Scott- Brown simply destroyed the field. Their nearest rivals, George Heriot s, were 20 seconds behind! Final medal haul: 4 Golds, 1 Silver, 3 bronzes. Following on from their success at the Scottish Schools Indoor Rowing Championships, James Morrison and Mark Sullivan competed at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships. James won the J16 2K race with a time of 6.33mins and was part of the winning team in the J18 3K race. Adding to his medal haul, Mark Sullivan won silver in the J18 race with a time of 6.45mins.

5 Sporting Successes continued Cross Country Results for Lomond Pupils The Garscube Schools Cross Country Races yielded some fantastic performances from Lomond pupils who showed true grit, on a very muddy course, while producing some superb results. It was a great day out with Cameron Kemp (S6) running in his final year of school cross country and Ruby Erith running her first race. The T2 boys ran very well collectively and achieved 2 nd team place. Final placings were for T1, Oscar Jamieson 11 th. For T2, Jenna Gallacher 1 st, Ewan McCartney 9 th, Rory Dunlop 12 th, Oscar Deighan 13 th, Magnus Gray 21 st, and Adam Huang 22 nd. Cameron Kemp (S6) won the Senior Event (S1 to S6) with Alastair McCartney (S2) finishing 3rd. Fantastic results all round, well done to all! Jamie Johnson 2017 Cyclo Cross Scottish Champion While waiting for the new mountain bike season to start, Jamie (S4) is competing in Cyclo Cross and enjoying great success. At the end of October, Jamie came 4 th in the under 16 cyclo cross race in Abergavenny, just missing a podium place by 20 seconds. It was an outstanding performance in a field of approximately 50 quality riders from all over Britain. In November, Jamie followed this up with another win, at Knockburn Loch, Aberdeenshire in the Scottish Cyclo cross Championships coming 1 st in the under 16 boys. A huge achievement in a very strong field and is now the 2017 Scottish Champion! He is also currently sitting in 4th overall after competing in all of the British rounds so far. The British Cyclo cross Championships will be held in Cross Country Success for Jenna Gallacher and Ewan McCartney Jenna and Ewan (T2 pupils) who competed in a cross country race for Helensburgh AAC U11 at Maryhill Park on Saturday 21 October and finished 3 rd girl and 2 nd boy respectively. Other sporting successes.. Finlay Hamilton (S4) was recently awarded a place at the Dunbartonshire Golf Union Junior Coaching College. He competed against other young players in the county to win a place which will see him receive coaching for the next 18 months. Eilidh McQueen (S2) has also been nominated for an RYA Scotland award as a Class Academy Sailor of the Year. Luke McCafferty (J3) attained his level 8 swimming certificate this year. He has also recently completed the bronze level of the Rookie Life Guard programme which was developed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK.

6 Adventure and Service News S3 Business Management Donate to Mary s Meals For the second year in a row Lomond School s S3 Business Management class have coordinated the school s Mary s Meals Backpack Campaign, in association with their studies on the Third Sector. S3 business managers have run the project from its launch to the collection of the completed backpacks. They have presented at assembly, run an advertising campaign within the school creating awareness of the required contents for the backpacks, conducted weekly collections from form classes and filled and organised the bags in preparation for the collection last week. With the assistance of the S5 pupils, and the generosity of the school as a whole, the team were able to hand over almost 100 completed backpacks to Mary s Meals for distribution to children who so desperately need them in order to attend school and escape the cycle of poverty they are in.
