The City Club s Travel Signature Group is planning a day trip to Saugatuck, Michigan on Thursday, May 31, Plans are still being firmed up, but the trip will include bus transportation, a boat ride on the Kalamazoo River and dinner at the Butler Restaurant in Saugatuck before returning to Ann Arbor. There will be free time for lunch on your own and to wander the shops and galleries of this charming destination. 6 SPOTLIGHT ON ED WILLIAMS Do you feel a great sense of triumph when you add twenty numbers, each in the thousands, and find, upon checking your work that you were correct the first time? For many of us that arithmetic exercise is as close as we ever get to mathematics and, certainly, as close as we want to be. Fortunately for all of us there are some people who love math and its applications and are very happy to make a career in a field that demands numerical skills. Ed Williams is one of them. Ed was born in Ann Arbor and raised in Rochester, MI. He received his bachelor s degree from the Honors College at Michigan State where he enjoyed a full scholarship and majored in of course mathematics. After undergraduate study, a National Science Foundation Fellowship sent him to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The Master s he earned in one year s study ended Ed s formal education as he was drafted into the United States Army. Ed spent two years in the service principally at Walter Reed Hospital in the District of Columbia where he worked as a programmer. While computers were not brand new in 1971, they were at an early stage of development and there were few, if any, programs that could be used to answer pressing research questions. Ed developed programs that were of statistical use to doctors who used them to determine the relative effectiveness of various treatment methods. After the Army, Ed took a job at Ford as a computer analyst. After a few years he also began to teach at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Of necessity, his classes were in the evening as he held a fulltime day job. Ed has now retired from Ford but he continues to teach at UM-Dearborn. Bridge was the hook that brought Ed to the City Club. He had played while in high school and then in college. When he reached graduate school he was also ready for duplicate bridge which he enjoyed. When he entered the work force he drifted away from bridge until smoking was banned from the table and eventually from the premises. Later, Ed was invited to play with Chris Nelson at the City Club. Chris is another person who had dropped out of and then returned to bridge but his interest did not last. In addition to bridge, however, Ed became involved in Lunch and Learn, Dine and Discover, travelogues and many of the excursions around the state that the Club arranges. He was here to stay. Besides bridge, Ed has another beloved hobby and that is travel. Among his many excursions, Ed lists two trips as favorites. One was to Morocco where it was not the sights that so much intrigued Ed but the people. He met professors and students who were professionally and technically engaging and so friendly. The second trip was to Rome and Barcelona [what s not to love!!] with stops in Tunis and Algiers. Stockholm to Bergen was another happy experience. The group spent two days in St. Petersburg where Ed could not get his fill of the Hermitage and also enjoyed the Fabergé Museum. Recent loosening or restrictions on travel to Cuba (at least for the moment) allowed Ed to visit that country a year ago with a University of Wisconsin Alumni trip. Many details of the trip fascinated Ed but he was most impressed by the state of medical care that he witnessed. The City Club has become an integral part of Ed s life. He wants to see it grow and most especially to diversify membership. This is a very difficult task as he realizes and one to which many have dedicated themselves.
