Some people may be motivated by their spring break plans involving a beach front property, south of Gainesville. Hopefully, your experiences gained through participating in RecSports programs have taught you that active and healthy living are too important for short term goals and that quick fixes do not stand the test of time. Take advantage of the information you can gain from our Personal Trainers, Massage Therapists and many of our other staff members to learn how to make changes that will improve your quality of life. Team sports are a great way to connect with fellow students while helping to improve your overall health. In addition to the chance to play for a Championship T-shirt, Intramural Sports is offering new recreational leagues this spring. The recreational leagues allow you to play almost twice as many games as the competitive leagues, focusing on the experience rather than trying to win a championship. Of course, if you are looking for a higher level of competition, as well as the chance to develop your leadership skills, joining one of the 41 Sport Clubs might be for you. As it becomes warmer this semester, enjoy the great outdoors at Lake Wauburg. With your Gator 1 Card you can kayak with the gators, take a belay course, play a game of disc golf and much more. 6 4. MASSAGE THERAPY The Massage Therapy Program offers students and RecSports members a place to receive therapeutic bodywork at a reasonable price. Therapists on staff are licensed within their field of expertise. Several different types of massages are available ranging from Sports Massage to Swedish Massage. (photo) 5. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING The Strength & Conditioning Program offers an educated staff to guide you toward proper and effective usage of the weight room and cardio equipment. If you prefer independence in your exercise program, Strength & Conditioning will meet your needs by answering questions and providing general advice. Please utilize our staff when performing exercises that can be spotted or if you need assistance in basic exercise selection. OLYMPIC LIFTING AT SOUTHWEST RECREATION CENTER The Strength & Conditioning Program is excited to introduce Olympic Weightlifting at the Southwest Recreation Center this spring. Complete with Olympic lifting platforms, half racks, bumper plates and chalk, the Olympic lifting area will be a monitored, controlled space where students who meet specific criteria may perform Olympic-style lifts such as the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch. In order to use this space, lifters must meet one of the following criteria: Complete the Olympic Weightlifting Orientation. The RecSports Strength & Conditioning Program offers the orientation on a monthly basis. Information regarding orientation description, dates and times can be found on the Strength & Conditioning page at recsports.ufl.edu. Complete a test-out session with a designated RecSports Fitness Staff member. Information regarding test-out criteria and protocol for scheduling a test-out can be found on the Strength & Conditioning page at recsports.ufl.edu. DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE Deep Tissue Bodywork is applied with the intention of accessing the deeper layers of the body. Pressure is applied to resisting points in the body until the resistance is released. Deep Tissue Massage helps with chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. SPORTS MASSAGE Sports Massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts in which Sports Massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event and injury treatment. Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site to establish blood flow and warm up the muscles. Post-event massage serves to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. MASSAGE THERAPY PROGRAM OFFERINGS ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE Orthopedic Massage involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of soft tissue to reduce pain and dysfunction. The focus is on restoring structural balance throughout the body to promote both prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal dysfunctions. SWEDISH MASSAGE Swedish Massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. The strokes, all flowing toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, percussive and tapping movements, with the application of oil, reducing friction on the skin. Swedish Massage benefits include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury. Upon completion of the Olympic Weightlifting Orientation or once a lifter has tested-out, he/she will receive a Lift Card that must be presented before using the area. BOOTCAMP BOOTCAMP: Monday, 5-6 p.m. at Maguire Field Bootcamp is an advanced class designed to offer high intensity training, total body conditioning, core training and speed and agility training in a non-traditional format. BASIC BOOTCAMP: Thursdays, 5-6 p.m. at Maguire Field If you want to flip tires but are a little intimidated, Basic Bootcamp is the same format as Bootcamp but offered at a lower intensity with a focus on skill development. 11 SPORT CLUBS SPOTLIGHT BOWLING COACH MICHAEL PAIVA The University of Florida bowling club has performed at a high level since its birth in Led by Coach Michael Paiva, the bowling club has sent a women s team to nationals 20 times and a men s team 18 times. The travel team competes in United States Bowling Congress collegiate sponsored events in cities including, Orlando, Las Vegas, Indianapolis and Chattanooga. The team also hosts the Florida Baker Shootout every fall semester, which brings in collegiate teams from across the country. Coach Paiva competed for the University of Florida team in the late 1970 s, took over coaching duties in 1983 and is in his 22nd season coaching. He has six nationally recognized coaching certifications and has served time on the National Collegiate Coaches Board, as well as having been part of the coaching staff for the Columbian youth national team. He is one of the premier bowling gurus in the country and continues to pass on his expertise to University of Florida student-athletes. SPORT CLUBS COACH s CORNER SYNCH OR SWIM Combining swimming, dance and gymnastics, synchronized swimming is a sport that calls for athletes with strength, flexibility, creativity and breath control. Routines are choreographed to music and consist of elaborate moves on, above and under the water. Synchronized swimmers can spend up to one minute under water while at the same time keeping in rhythm with the music and staying suspended in the water. A synchronized swimming routine, four minutes in length, is similar to running a marathon while holding your breath, all of which is done while smiling brightly at a group of judges. The University of Florida Synchronized Swimming Club knows exactly what it takes to perform at a high level. The University of Florida Synchronized Swimming Club competes against club and varsity teams across the country. The club has won the Club Sports National Championship for synchronized swimming the past two years. Last year, the club placed seventh in the country, beating many varsity programs. Last year, Allison Baker, Elise Foreit and Alceste Laurenti were named All-American swimmers. Allison Baker and Alceste Laurenti went to trials for the national team. Both swimmers trained with the National Team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Allison Baker had the opportunity to compete with the national team this summer at the China Open. The Synchronized Swimming coach is a former National Team Member and also a national champion at Ohio State University. Club members also have had the opportunity to compete at Senior Nationals, the most elite meet in the country. The club has been consistently successful and has set the standard for excellence in the program. ALCESTE LAURENTI President and All-American Q: What do you like most about synchro? A: I like the family aspect of synchro the best. Each girl is a sister to me and our coach is like our second mom. It is a great bonding sport! Q: Do you have a fun/interesting story to share about synchro? A: When training with the National Team earlier this year, I must say my experience at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs was it. It was one of the most rigorous practice schedules I have ever had, but also I had a blast! Being at that level of a sport is amazing and breathtaking. ALLISON BAKER Internal Vice President and All-American Q: Describe the rigorous practices that synchronized swimmers must endure in order to compete at such a high level: A: It s very hard to prepare routines that are difficult, innovative and entertaining enough to move ahead of teams that have beat us in the past. We do not know what our competitors are planning until we see them compete and then it is up to the judges to decide who impressed them more. In a typical practice we will stretch and do a few exercises on the pool deck before getting in the pool to swim laps. Then we usually work on a few general drills and then begin working on our routines. We even practice outside of the pool twice a week in the Group Fitness rooms for stretching, cardio and strength exercises. We also do a lot of land drills, which is the way we work on routines on land using just our arms. Q: What moments are the most special to you as a coach? What moments in your career as a player have been the most special? A: We had some very successful teams in the past and one of the most exciting events was at collegiate nationals where we just missed out on making the television finals. Although we did not make the finals, it was our best finish and an exciting experience. However, an even more satisfying accomplishment is that our teams have been successful on the lanes, but most importantly we ve been successful in the classroom. We ve consistently had bowlers selected to the academic All-American teams. Q: Who was the most influential person in your life that helped you develop your skills that you continue to pass on to your players? A: There have been many people who have been influential, but the one who convinced me to start coaching was Mike Walker. Mike was involved with the local bowling community, having served as president of the local men s bowling association, as well as managing a local bowling center for several years. Dick Ritger, a former professional bowler, taught one of the first seminars I attended and he had a big influence in what I teach. USA Bowling s coaching certification program had a major influence as well. I was selected as one of the coaches to attend the first program, which was taught by Fred Borden (head coach of Team USA) and I ve adopted several of his coaching techniques. Q: What does your team do in a typical practice? A: Our practices are split up to focus on different things. At the beginning of the year we emphasize techniques and drills, such as how to make adjustments, getting the proper balance and leverage and spare making. One of the days we focus mostly on team aspects and work on getting the team to function as one. Q: What has been the most unique atmosphere in another city that you have competed in? A: We ve bowled several years in tournaments in Las Vegas and the city has an electric atmosphere and definitely is a unique place. Another city is St. Louis. For years we bowled in the St. Louis tournament, which was held during Thanksgiving weekend. It was a time the team really bonded because we drove and thus everyone was together in vans for 16 hours. Additionally, we had more free time than other events and would visit the arch, as well as the Bowling Hall of Fame Museum (which used to be located in St. Louis). Q: What do you like most about the sport of bowling? A: Although many people do not realize it, bowling requires a lot of coordination and effort to be one of the best. It has always been said that anyone can bowl and this is true, but the sport can also be difficult to master. I like the fact that it allows someone to become a good bowler, even if they have not been successful in other sports. Q: What is the most challenging thing about being a coach? A: Each group of bowlers creates different challenges and often finding the right balance for creating team chemistry can be challenging. The second most challenging aspect is convincing everyone to have confidence in his or her ability. Many times bowlers will start second guessing themselves and they just need to have trust and confidence. 20 // DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS RECSPORTS.UFL.EDU \\ 21
