2 CONTENTS DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Fall 2010 is going to be one of the most exciting times ever in RecSports history at the University of Florida. We are really excited about opening the expansion of the Southwest Recreation Center. The place looks absolutely beautiful. The expanded space, new amenities, new program possibilities and the renovation of space in the existing building make this project one that will provide a dramatic impact for our students and university community. Never before have we provided our participants with an indoor track, personal training studio or massage therapy rooms. The Social Lounge includes TV s and Wii games. Increased space for cardio equipment, fitness assessments and Group Fitness will allow us to meet the increased demands for those services and activities. Did I mention improvements in the use of technology? Personal viewing screens with a full array of cable channels will be available on all cardio equipment, marketing TV s instead of bulletin boards, hand keys for access control so you will not have to bring your Gator 1 Card, digital locks on lockers and more. Through building design and the use of the latest technology I expect the building to earn the highest LEED certification of Platinum. The technology and sustainable features meet the expectations of today s UF student. Let s not forget everything else RecSports has to offer. Our parks at Lake Wauburg are more beautiful than ever. Intramural Sports offers an array of team and individual leagues and tournaments. The 40 Sport Clubs provide the opportunity to learn new sports and compete against other colleges and universities. The pools offer a great place to get fit, cool off and just relax. Jump-start your RecSports experience by attending the Grand Opening Ceremony for the Southwest Recreation Center expansion on August 24 at 4 p.m., then stick around for the RecSports Extravaganza where you ll be able to discover everything RecSports has to offer from recreation to fitness and sports. Everyone has the opportunity to be active and Live in Motion. 6 SPOTLIGHT RECSPORTS GRAPHIC SYMBOL Introducing the new face of RecSports. This graphic symbol has been designed to encompass the many facets of RecSports After a collaborative effort to brainstorm endless words and ideas pertaining to four different topics: Florida, Gainesville, University of Florida and RecSports, a cohesive idea was developed in order to unite the four subjects into one entity. The final word bank Resulting from the brainstorming sessions embodies everything that UF RecSports stands for. these words were conveyed in the new Recsports identity. The new Graphic Symbol transmits all of these themes serving as the PRIMARY basis for the overall look and feel of the department LETTERFORM F The entire mark forms the letterform F. The F serves to represent the state of Florida as well as the University of Florida. The inclusion of the F in the logo accomplishes individuality for the brand. The F creates a unique identity to the recreational sports department at the University of Florida. This works to personalize the brand, setting apart from the wide range of recreational sports departments across the country. LETTERFORM R The top, curved portion of the F also functions as the letterform R standing for the R in RecSports (and Recreational Sports). LETTERFORM S The bottom section of the F functions as the letterform S, standing for the S in RecSports (and Recreational Sports). UNITY At this point two letterforms merge together to form a new one. This parallels the idea of a department that prides itself on relationships between students, staff and the UF community. MOVEMENT The fluid and organic curves of this mark help to instill feelings of movement and energy. 6 DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS

15 MASSAGE THERAPY The Massage Therapy Program offers students and RecSports members a place to receive therapeutic bodywork at a reasonable price. Therapists on staff are licensed within their field of expertise. Several different types of massages are available ranging from Sports Massage to Swedish Massage. massage therapy program offerings deep tissue massage Deep Tissue Bodywork is applied with the intention of accessing the deeper layers of the body. Pressure is applied to resisting points in the body until the resistance is released. Deep Tissue Massage helps with chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. orthopedic massage Orthopedic Massage involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of soft tissue to reduce pain and dysfunction. The focus is on restoring structural balance throughout the body to promote both prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal dysfunctions. sports massage Sports Massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts in which Sports Massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event and injury treatment. Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site to establish blood flow and warm up the muscles. Post-event massage serves to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Postevent massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. swedish massage Swedish Massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. The strokes, all flowing toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, percussive and tapping movements, with the application of oil, reducing friction on the skin. 18 SPORT CLUBS Women s Water Polo & Tri-Gators have received a spotlight in this edition of RecSports: The Magazine. Women s Water Polo & Tri-Gators have received this reward for having the highest levels of participation at the 2010 Midnight Fun Run 5k. Over 800 participants came out during Spring finals week to relieve stress and enjoy a midnight breakfast with fellow runners. Visit recsports.ufl. edu for more information about Sport Clubs. tri-gators What is a Tri-Gator? A Tri-Gator is an athlete crazy enough to be obsessed with three sports instead of just one. Triathlons consist of a three sport event in which competitors swim, bike and run. Any University of Florida student can become a member of the Tri-Gators. All you need to do is register with the Sport Clubs office by completing a waiver and taking a swim test at one of the campus pools supervised by a RecSports Lifeguard. After completing the waiver and the swim test you may attend any of the coached practices held during the week. The club meets at Percy Beard Track on Mondays, hosts a law school run on Wednesdays and a swim practice on Fridays. The club also offers many volunteering opportunities to give back to the community through triathlon. The club volunteers every year at a kids race in Gainesville. They also host their own race known as the Tri-Gator Super Sprint. Tri-Gators is open to all skill levels ranging from serious competitors who train for nationals every year to those that enjoy hanging out with friends and exercising. Become a member this fall and join the life changing fun that is triathlons. "TRIATHLONS CONSISTS OF A THREE SPORT EVENT IN WHICH COMPETITORS SWIM, BIKE AND RUN." 18 DEPARTMENT OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS

19 MFR WINNERS Congratulations! women's water polo Women's Water Polo is a fast-paced, dynamic sport that is exciting, aggressive and fun. Established in 1993, the Women s Water Polo club has grown significantly in recent years. For the first time in history, the club was fortunate to have enough players for two teams. The club allows for opportunities to compete nationally, as well as locally, specifically in the Southeast. As part of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), the club is required to compete in three tournaments against teams in the Southeast division. These tournaments determine national ranking and ultimately decide which club competes at Nationals. Every season starting in 1993 and ending in 2008, the UF club placed first in the region and competed at Nationals. During the season, the club finished 2nd in the region. The club competed in a number of tournaments to gain experience and practice. The team traveled to the UCF Knights Tournament in Orlando, the Spring Fling Tournament at Florida State and the Irish Invitational at Notre Dame University. The Women s Water Polo club has been working all summer and will continue to work this fall to place first during its spring championship tournament. The team travels throughout the fall and spring semester to several tournaments, including Notre Dame, UCF, Emory, Miami of Ohio and Tulane. Athletes of all skill levels are welcome to participate. "FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, THE CLUB WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE ENOUGH PLAYERS FOR TWO TEAMS." RECSPORTS.UFL.EDU 19
