4 Interesting Fact! Most adults have 24 ribs (12 pairs) but 1 in every 500 people has an extra rib called cervical rib. This rib, grows from the base of the neck just above the collarbone, is not always fully formed. Extra rib can cause health issues if it squashes nearby blood vessels or nerves. This condition can cause:» Pain in shoulders or neck» Loss of limb feeling» Blood clots

5 The Skeletal System The human body has: 206 bones, 32 teeth, and a network of other structures that connect bones together. Functions of the Skeletal System Provide support Protect internal organs Allows your body to move Stores and produced materials that your body needs Page 2

6 Interesting Fact! Bones are strong, rigid, and built to withstand a lot of force. They are stronger than steel (10-16 pounds to break). BUT surprisingly they are not the hardest substance in the body. That title goes to another part of the skeletal system: tooth enamel. Protects crown of teeth Owes its strength to high concentration of minerals (calcium salts in particular).

7 Page 2 Compact Bone Compact bone makes up the outer layer of all bones. Although it looks dense and solid, It is full of holes for nerves and blood vessels. Spongy Bone Spongy bone contains flat and needlelike structures that resist stress. Red bone marrow may fill the open spaces in some bones. Outer Membrane An outer membrane covers most of a long bone. The inner portion of a membrane contains cells that build up and breakdown bone. Central Cavity Central cavities in long bones usually contain yellow bone marrow (fat).

9 Babies have more bones than adults. Newborn baby has approximately 300 different components mixture of cartilage and bones. Cartilage eventually solidifies into bone in a process called ossification. Overtime the extra bones in infants fuse to form larger bones, reducing the overall of bones to 206 by adulthood.

10 Interesting Fact! Bones come in all shapes and sizes and are not evenly distributed throughout the body. Some areas have far more bones than others. Each hand has 27 bones. Each food has 26 bones. Which means that together the body s 2 hands and 2 feet have 106 bones. That means they contain more than ½ of bones in entire body.

42 Your Heart Beat The action of the heart has two main phases. In the first phase, the heart relaxes and the atria fill with blood. In the second phase, the heart contracts and pumps blood. The rate at which your heart muscles contract is regulated by the pacemaker, a small group of cells in the wall of the right atrium. Average heart rate varies from one person to the next and from one situation to the next.
