2 President s Pondering On Sunday Sandra and I rode the Nisqually Michel park. We had a good ride and discussed areas of the park with one of the Nisqually tribal members who rode my old horse Romeo. The ride was very enjoyable and lots of information was exchanged. Some of the trails we have put in go right thru archeological sites in the parks portion. We need to be careful of these sites so we don't destroy any articles yet to be discovered. It is difficult to know where these sites are because of fears that others would try to pl;under artifacts from them. I have seen this done when in Nevada at Grapeview canyon. some people took some of the hieroglyphics off of the rocks. this prevents other from seeing these. I would hope that we as BCH members would be above this practice. It is going to be a difficult task to work on the trails and protect archeological sites at the same time, but I do believe that it can be done. Especially by a wonderful gorup of horse men and women as is the Nisqually Back Country Horsemen. Horse tip for today: To keep your horse calm you have to remain calm. Horses are herd animals and if you spend time observing them you will notice that if one horse in the herd raises his head all of them look around to see what disturbed the first one. If one horse starts to run they all run because them don't want to be the one eaten. The way I train my horse to not react is to scare him myself. On the ground first. Then on his back. He then thinks that he needs to pay more attention to the crazy person on his back and not react to outside influences. They do learn that they do not have to react to every little thing and if you do not act like there is something to be afraid of he will not react in a negative way. Happy riding to you. 5 (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4) Lola May: Our coffers are running in the red approximately $389. When asked, Lola went through the expenses but I was not fast enough to record them all. Hopefully the spaghetti dinner / auction and will add additional funds. Any fund raising ideas would be welcomed. Joe Barcomb: Please turn in Volunteer hours for help clearing trails as well as any time spent driving to and from work parties. These hours benefit the our club as well as the state chapter. Kathy Talbot: Auction is Friday with an $8.00 spaghetti dinner starting at 5:00, the silent auction at 6:00 and the live auction at 7:00. Setup will start at 2:00 and additional items and help is still needed and will be welcomed. Meeting adjourned for ten minutes and resumed with a general discussion for the good of the chapter. Frank and Sandra rode at Nisqually Mashel and there are still bees out. Joe and Frank went to the Nisqually tribal board to talk with them about developing trails on their land and the contiguous Nisqually Mashel State Park. Frank is planning to take at least 2 members of the Nisqually tribe on a trail ride to encourage cooperation in developing trail systems on state and tribal lands for the benefit of hike, bike and horse trails. We also want to find ways encourage respectful observance of the massacre site. Frank and Sandra went camping and rode at the Kings Horse Camp and there was nobody there. They recommend the area and ride. There was a lively discussion on how horses, hikers and bicyclist have to find a way to safely coexist on backcountry trails. Meeting was Adjourned PHOTOS FROM OCTOBER AUCTION! Thank you all who helped, gave, attended, and bought! Page 5 of 10
