Our Commander is not able to write his column this month due to a family emergency. He and his family have our prayers for a positive outcome. I will do my best to fill-in for Commander Dick this month. As we enter the holiday season we have a LOT going on this both November and December. We are still looking for volunteers for the Thanksgiving and Christmas basket deliveries. Contact Linsey at if you can help. There was also much excitement in our city this past month and I'd like to salute the fine men and women of the Apple Valley PD for some great take downs of bad guys who thought they would come to our city and create a mini-crime wave. It did not work out well for them thanks to the Apple Valley PD. Which brings me to my next point. As we get older (and who isn't getting older?), we become targets for scammers and criminals who view us as easy targets. We tend to live in mature neighborhoods, and many aging veterans now live alone. But there are precautions we all can take. Learn to recognize a scam when you hear or see one. Contact Us info@post1776.com (continued from page 1) Common scams involve someone pretending to be from the utility company, roofing repair, IRS or a Sheriff in a remote state who says your grandson or granddaughter are in custody and need bail money NOW! DO NOT FALL FOR IT! My personal favorite is the one where there is a noticeable delay between answering the call and the caller saying hello (usually with a foreign accent). They ask I would like to speak with Jerry (my name is Gary). So I answer back in using their accent But I have no goats. I can not pay you! And they usually hang up immediately. You can also get a call blocker from the Android Play store or Apple Store for Iphone owners. Install it on your smart phone. Then when you receive one of those calls, simply add that number to your block list and you will never hear from that number again. Of course the scammers will try new and different numbers to annoy you, but keep blocking them! As Christmas approaches, also be wary of pick pockets and thieves. Packages left on your front porch are vulnerable as are ladies purses in a shopping cart when at the store. It only takes a couple of seconds for a thief to steal a wallet from an unattended purse or from a distracted shopper when valuables are left in a shopping cart. 3 Gambling ReporT In case to weren t at the last General Membership meeting let it be known that I have tendered my resignation as Gambling Manager. I will be turning the reins over to Jo Strong who was selected by Past Commander Tappainer when my health was in question. I ask that you give her the same respect you have shown me (well at least most of the time). I will be staying on as an advisor and mentor for six months or as needed. Being an unpaid volunteer under Dave Anderson for ten years and as Manager for an additional ten has been an honor to serve the Legion during this time. To me the Legion, Veterans and community have been my heat and soul as it will still be but in a more limited capacity. The one thing that I won t miss are the required monthly meetings. Thank God it has dropped from the old four meetings to only three. My life and routine have been dictated by those meetings. If memory serves me right I have only missed five or six meetings in the last ten years. I did a lot of soul searching, but I have deemed it more important to enjoy life and in spite of my cancers and Agent Orange disabilities an as I say Spit into the wind So in my last official month I want to Thank You for all of your support! Now for the next twenty years give Jo Strong the same backing and support! In God we Trust, and God Bless America! 4 Beyond The Yellow Ribbon November 2018 The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network of Apple Valley exists to serve military personnel both those currently serving and Veterans - and their families, by assisting them any way we can. Your help and support has been and continues to be very much appreciated! Please join us by contributing your time and talents, using the special abilities you have. Some recent examples of how we have served: 1. If you know of a military family needing help, or you or another Veteran needing assistance, please contact us For example, we recently worked with other Yellow Ribbon Networks to assist a Veteran with his car payment, helped another paint his house, assisted another set up snow plowing through our contacts, and worked with other agencies to help a Vet with electric repairs. 2. The next Military Appreciation Dinner is November 15th. Please note it is a week earlier than our normal schedule. At our October we enjoyed great food and wonderful entertainment by Eagan Women of Note who sang patriotic songs and some show tunes. 1. Our Appreciation Dinners are a partnership with the Legion providing excellent meals, which the BTYR serves to Veterans for a voluntary donation. Preregistration is encouraged so we don t run out of food.
