NOTE: VOTING ON DUES GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING DEC. 19 th I hope everyone has recovered from all the turkey and stuffing that was consumed last week! I certainly ate more than my share. We are coming into the Christmas Season and we have a lot of activities to get ready for! Our children s Christmas Party will be on December 10 from 11am to 1pm. I am in need of volunteers to help out with shopping, decorating and wrapping of presents. Please contact me if you can help!! If you would like to register your children or grandchildren please me their names and ages. Ages are from 0-10 years old. My is: ctappainer@charter.net Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there for the whole two hours and we will have presents, cookies to decorate and tons of activities for the kids!! The Legion Family Holiday Party will be on December 14th at 5pm. It s going to be a great time to catch up with everyone and have an awesome time!! Please pick up a registration form at the pull-tab booth and make your payment by December 9th!! Our choices this year are Turkey or Prime-Rib!! Our delivery of apples for the school district went very well!! I ve received several s from grateful teachers and counselors! Thanks to all the volunteers!!! We delivered 25 Thanksgiving Baskets to Veterans and ISD196 families who were in need. I can t say thank-you enough to all the volunteers and drivers! If you know of anyone that needs a Christmas Basket, please contact me and I will get them on the list!! It s so important this time of year to remember all the veterans who don t get a chance to get out and celebrate. Please take time to visit our veterans who are homebound or take some time to go to the Vet s Home in Hastings. Consider adopting a Veteran for the holidays!! Talk to Sue Register at the Vet s Home. Contact Us info@post1776.com (Commander: Continued from Page 1) Christmas is a time for honoring our veterans, who gave their utmost to ensure that we can keep celebrating Christmas with our families year after year. At this important time of year, I wish you every blessing and happiness. Commander Carla Report from Membership - dues Many members have asked Where does the money we pay in dues go? Here is your answer for 2018 and the proposed increase for Post 2018 dues ($40) and where they go. - per membership Department Dues (including MN Legionnaire) $13.50 National Dues (Including Nat'l Magazine) $18.50 Legion Hospital Association $0.25 District Dues $ 3.00 Total $35.25 Left for the Post $ 4.75 With approximately 1100 members, that leaves us about $5, per year. The proposed dues increase to $45 per year would leave the post with $9.75 per membership. A $5 increase seems like a lot but it is the cost of 1 cup of coffee at Starbucks. The money the post collects is used for (among other things): Mailing the newsletter: about $ per month or $7, per year; Member only parties; The Christmas parties (Kids and Legion Family. In the past couple of years, the National dues went up $3.00 and the Department dues went up $3.00. That is a $6.00 increase and we are only asking for a $5.00 increase. We will be voting on dues at the General Membership Meeting December 19th. Post 1776.com I just want to say Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! 4 Scouting Update The Troop recently held a Court of Honor and we had new leadership installed for the next 6 months. Congratulations and best wishes to our newly elected officers. We also had 4 scouts advance in their rank and several scouts earned merit badges and special awards. One of our Eagle Scouts, Eric Gunderson was awarded 7 Eagle palms for the merit badges he earned. It was also announced that we have 2 scouts waiting for their Eagle Board of Review and 1 scout that is submitting Eagle paperwork before Thanksgiving. Several other scouts are on track for Eagle at the end of this year or early next year. Our Troop is holding it s annual Thanksgiving get together at Camp Sacajawea again this year. We have 44 scouts and family members scheduled to attend. We are looking forward to some great Troop family time! Our Troop will be selling Christmas trees again this year at Cub Foods in Apple Valley. Money raised goes to help our scouts on their journey down the scouting trail. I am so proud to be associated with such an amazing group of young men! Please stop out and support them on their journey. There were S.A.L. meat raffles and the door prizes ranged from gift cards at our favorite haunts like Target and Kwik Trip to bottles of well you know. Apple Days Thank you Thank you to everyone who helped deliver apples this year. We hope to see everyone next year. 6 American Legion Post Granada Drive Apple Valley MN SAL Reports Veteran's Day was fantastic! We had a great turnout, and many volunteers to help out. Our S.A.L. meat raffle was a great success with a whole new variety of meat packs. We had a large number of SAL guys to work the raffle. Thanks to all Our next event will be December 9 starting at 11 am. We will have meat raffles and horse racing. As always God bless our troops and their families Bruce Bigler - S.A.L. commander MECHANIC'S CORNER This time of year, people often forget about their tail lights, be sure they "ALL" work. A burned out tail light is a reason to get pulled over by the police! Nobody needs any kind of ticket this time of year, especially if you have had a cocktail or two! You should also carry an emergency kit in your car, Be safe...be smart NOTE: The cost of printing and mailing out the newsletter keeps going up and up.
