After this loss, his family kew they wated to give back i his hoor ad support cacer research i the local Colorado commuities where they grew up ad ow live. For the past eight years, the family has held a golf touramet fudraiser o the Satur Dea of Labor Day weeked, choosig CCRP as the beeficiary. This year, they topped all previous amouts raised, garerig early $5,500, brigig their total support i excess of $27,000. This year s touramet was held at Dever s City Park Golf Course with 106 Hackers participatig. Every year the touramet offers several sigature fudraisig holes icludig the Tutu o Hole Two. O this hole me ca hit from the ladies tees if they wear a tutu. First I believe that cliical trials play a critical role i ay ocologist s practice. I also believe there are o treatmets that we curretly have available for the treatmet of cacer which caot be improved upo. The oly proper way to idetify more effective ad less toxic treatmets is through erollmet i cliical trials, ad the more patiets who are ivolved, the faster these treatmets become the ew stadard of care. What is cliical trial participatio like for the patiet? I do believe that my patiets who choose to participate i cliical trials have a differet experiece as they go through treatmet. For oe, they ted to be somewhat more ivolved, ad also have some greater sese of cotrol of the situatio. I additio, thaks to woderful research coordiators, these patiets report that they feel more take care of, ad better supported tha they might if they were oly seeig me. 4 4 NIH Exceptioal Respoders to Cacer Therapy Study Lauched The Exceptioal Respoders Iitiative, a study to ivestigate the molecular factors of tumors associated with exceptioal treatmet resposes of cacer patiets to drug therapies, was lauched recetly by the Natioal Cacer Istitute (NCI), part of the Natioal Istitutes of Health. Scietists will attempt to idetify the molecular features of tumors that predict whether or ot a particular drug or class of drugs will be beeficial. Ivestigators will examie tumor specimes from patiets i cliical trials who achieved a exceptioal respose relative to other trial participats, or other patiets who achieved a exceptioal ad uexpected respose to a oivestigatioal therapy. I treatig patiets with cacer, uexpected ad prologed remissios followig stadard therapy ca be observed; the reasos why certai patiets experiece these remissios have bee uclear. If molecular markers could be developed that predict positive resposes to certai therapies, eve i a small subset of patiets, it might be possible to more effectively choose treatmet programs for idividual patiets. I this study, some of the tissue ad cliical data from exceptioal respoders will be obtaied from NCI-supported trials as well as potetially other cliical trials. The remaiig samples ad data will come from stadard therapy settigs, such as commuity practice, where there are reliable outcome data, ad from pharmaceutical idustry trials or other sources. Ultimately, cliicias would like to use this iformatio to idetify patiets who may potetially respod to agets with the same or similar mechaism of actio. It may be difficult to determie if abormalities foud i exceptioal respoders are fuctioally sigificat ad whether the abormalities actually drive tumor growth. Additioally, relevat mutatios may be preset i less tha five percet of tumors, makig them difficult to idetify. The icreasig ability of molecular techologies to stratify tumor types by progosis or respose to treatmet will result i may commo cacers beig separated ito specific subtypes that may respod to drugs i very differet ways, oted Barbara A. I 1991, Bill Dea, a kidey cacer patiet ad cliical trial participat lost his battle to cacer. After this loss, his family kew they wated to give back i his hoor ad support cacer research i the local Colorado commuities where they grew up ad ow live. For the past eight years, the family has held a golf touramet fudraiser o the Satur Dea of Labor Day weeked, choosig CCRP as the beeficiary. This year, they topped all previous amouts raised, garerig early $5,500, brigig their total support i excess of $27,000. This year s touramet was held at Dever s City Park Golf Course with 106 Hackers participatig. Every year the touramet offers several sigature fudraisig holes icludig the Tutu o Hole Two. O this hole me ca hit from the ladies tees if they wear a tutu.
