Issue 3 Add Life to Your Years April 2018 Cuppa Corner for the Luck of the Irish By Rita Makkannaw Tuesday March 13 th saw a big crowd out to celebrate the luck of the Irish in this St. Patrick s Day celebration. Everyone got a spin on the lucky wheel with a chance to win a gold coin or a door prize ticket. The atrium was decorated for the festivities. Colleen Sicotte who has Irish blood running through her veins shared how the Irish always took especially good care of her when she travelled back to her roots. Everywhere I went there was laughter and happy people, and the grass is really greener over there We were entertained by a big little leprechaun when Dan MacMullin shared magic tricks and got everyone involved in song. Tony Spencer entertained us with great poetry. We were very fortunate to have Jess, Cass and Khiara (upper right), a troop of three Irish dancers, who has entertained all over the world. All in all it was indeed a wonderful event. Leprechaun Donna Legault (upper Lt.) Dan MacMullin (above), Tony Spencer (Lt.), and Helen (upper Rt.) who awaits the Children from 100 Voices (lower Rt.).

Feature Club & Other News Featured Club: Stained Glass By Rita Makkannaw Every Thursday at 9 am sees the gathering of people who are very creative. It is time to make beautiful items from stained glass. This club is led by Bill Pryma and Cliff Aysan. Up to 10 members come together and practice their artistic talents as they choose a project for themselves. They are a great team as they help each other to accomplish their aspirations. Bill was working on decorating a stepping stone for his front door while Hap Yaworski was making window hangings. Meanwhile Melanie Sinfield was hard at work on making four stained glass windows to adorn the front of her house. The most important part of this club is the fellowship and having a good time said Bill. New members are most welcome. We always make a point of lending a helping hand. He added. Donations of any stained glass would be most welcome. Books (and more) Sale - Recap The final tally of the February 27/28 book sale has been counted. Including table, popcorn and book sales, the event raised $1,700! A huge Thank you to Helen G. and Marilyn W. and all the other volunteers who helped with sorting, organizing, setting up and running this fun raiser. 2

Board News CLSA Board News The news out of this year s AGM is the election of new board members and the motion to accept the proposed bylaw revisions which address the change in board classification. The new bylaws better reflect the board s ongoing effort to transition from Operational to Governance. This means the Board continues to oversee the association but is now removed from the day to day operations. Although 112 people said they were going to attend, only 71 people showed up. Organizers prepared for 120, just in case a few more sports -minded members decided to make their votes count. In the end, 40 ($320) lunches were donated to hungry and appreciative Edmontonians in the Boyle/ McCauley area. Governance Board Definition The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership: setting direction, making policy and strategic decisions, overseeing and monitoring organizational performance and ensuring overall accountability. See page 9 for a list of the Board of Directors. 5 Board News Presidents Message - Alex Paterson Hello everyone, I am so please to report to you that we just concluded another year with an awesome annual general meeting. I personally want to thank the work done by our 2017 board of directors. To those board members who will not be returning to the board your contribution is greatly appreciated. I wish you all well in the future. To those board members returning thank you. I am looking forward to another splendid year in 2018, and to our newly elected board members welcome. To the executive director and her staff and the tremendous support from the city of Edmonton staff could not have happened without you, thank you all so very much was a year of transition; it was the first year of our restructure from an operations board to a governance board. Having been through this type of transition in the past, my experience told me that it can be challenging and taxing, particularly when it comes to change, which is inevitable and must occur to allow our association to flourish and grow. As expected, there were some challenges which were managed so very effectively by everyone involved. Now lets talk about 2018 It is an exciting year for our membership as we continue to work through the board structure change. I can already see the opportunity to focus some energy on the future and what we can do as an association to serve our members beyond what we do now. As you heard me allude to in my comments at the AGM, the strength of our association is its members. CLSA is the oldest and largest seniors association in Edmonton. One focus I would like all of us to join in on in 2018 is growing our membership. The health of our association is in membership. A strong membership allows us to look at expanding program offerings and it enables us to strive to keep the costs down for all members to be able to enjoy our services. Here is my invitation to each of us; when you are coming to the centre, invite someone you know to come or to meet you here. If each of us become ambassadors for the centre, we can help to inform, remind and encourage others to come enjoy what the association has to offer. It costs nothing to invite or refer others to come out to have a good time and the benefit is so very much for all of us in so many ways. Further to that, I would invite each of you to submit into the suggestion box or talk to a board member if you have any ideas that may help grow our membership is the year of growth for CLSA. May it be a wonderful year for each of you and your families. 5

Volunteering Volunteer of the Month - Carol Keeler By Rita Makkannaw All our volunteers are much appreciated, and we could not operate without them. We have decided to do a series of articles to get to know them better and highlight their contribution to our center. Every day you will see Carol Keeler busy at work at the center. She is responsible for all the decorations for the special events put up throughout the year. Designing is what I have done most of my life and designing is what I love to do, so this is really good for me. I used to have my own business and I would design themes like Christmas, Easter, Valentine s Day for stores as well as private special events. I even painted a Klondike theme on windows in St. Albert and a smurf theme for the kids. I began volunteering on various committees here at the center and that evolved into a fulltime volunteer designer position. My favorite is the weekly Cuppa Corner on Tuesday mornings, as I get to meet people, make popcorn and chat. I really enjoy coming in every day, meeting with people, and designing for all the special events we host. Watch for Carol s design talents for the upcoming Japanese Cuppa Corner April 17 th as well as the volunteer appreciation Hawaiian Luau on April 19th. Past events decorations have been enjoyed by all and we all look forward to more in the future. Volunteering at the Centre The winner of the $25.00 gift certificate for January was Joan Bennett and March was Marilyn Woolley. The certificate can be used toward any CLSA program or activity. All volunteers who donate five hours/month, track and submit their hours are eligible for this certificate. It s a small token of our appreciation for the time and effort you put into our organization. Watch this space for your name! To become a volunteer, applicants are interviewed, complete a criminal record check and attend three hours of City and Association training. The next volunteer intake training is on April 23 at 10 am with the facility tour at 1:00 pm Presently, volunteers are required in the fitness centre, to assist with special events, and help at the front desk. Call Tracy at to get the process started. Mark you calendar for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event on April 19 th. 8

SHAPES - Coming to CLSA this April! What is SHAPES? SHAPES is an acronym for Supporting Healthy Aging by Peer Education and Support. It s goal is to provide peer delivered education and support for seniors living in community, and to measure the impact of trained health coaches on healthy ageing behaviours. How did the program start? The program evolved as part of a research study. The study, funded by Covenant Health, is being carried out by the University of Alberta s Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry under: Dr. Adrian Wagg, Dr. Angela Juby, Dr. Kathleen Hunter, and Dr. William Dafoe. As the demand for these doctors as speakers at Dare to Age Well forums and seminars kept increasing, they came up with the idea to help disseminate relevant information to a greater number of seniors via peer health coaches. Why offer this program? Canadians are living longer than ever before. Encouragement of lifestyle practices which promote healthy aging and self management techniques to deal with chronic diseases are important in ensuring that seniors live healthy, active and enjoyable lives. What is offered in the program? There are three main interactive discussion components of this program: healthy heart, health brain, and healthy bones. Physical activity and nutrition in relation to each component are covered. Practical research using Fitbits (everyone in the program receives one to use) will also be included. Health coaching helps participants gain knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to become active participants in managing their health. Who is involved as peer health coaches? In 2017, three seniors associations were approached to be part of this study, including CLSA. Four of our members signed up to train as volunteer health coaches: Cheryl Pengelly, Rita Suter, Jerry Letal and Neil Milner. We are very proud to announce that all four completed the extensive training with these doctors in the Fall of Rita joined a team of coaches this winter and has been teaching at SEESA since January. Cheryl, Jerry and Neil will be starting their presentation series Wed, Apr. 18 until July 4. Congratulations to all four! From all of us at Central, best wishes as you go forward with your presentations. How can you become involved? Another study session is set to begin over the summer months. You will learn great information and be given tools to help you manage your own health. Registration deadline is June 5 for the next series. For more information and to register, contact Stephanie (U of A) at or to shapes@ualberta.ca. 11
