2 Department News International Electrical Stimulation Society Gadi Alon, PT, PhD, Associate Professor Emeritus, was an invited presenter at the International Electrical Stimulation Society (IFESS)'s FES Workshop 2015 entitled, FES: The Interdisciplinary Dialogue. The workshop was about the history, status, and outlook for Functional Electrical Stimulation and was held in Chicago, Illinois on October 15th and 16th, His topic was: "How to transform wearable FES into a standard of care intervention option in rehabilitation medicine." Other internationally recognized invited presenters included: Professors Hunter Peckham and Robert Kirsch from the Cleveland FES center, Professor Stuart Binder- Macleod from University of Delaware, Professor Phillip Troyk from Illinois Institute of Technology and Professor Vivian Mushahwar from University of Alberta, Canada. Welcome Please welcome Andrea Obah to the Department! Andrea started with PTRS yesterday as a Research Assistant. Her office will be Room 104 of the Allied Health Building. 3 Faculty Recognition Jill Whitall, PhD, Professor and Sandra McCombe Waller, PT, PhD, MS, NCS, Associate Professor (pictured below, left to right) were recognized during UMB Founders Week for their faculty awarded U.S. patent #8,845,494 for STEP-R (Rehabilitation for LE stroke). They were presented with a plaque for their achievement in a ceremony prior to the Entrepreneur of the Year presentation on October 21, 2015 by UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD; James Hughes, Chief Enterprise and Economic Development Officer and Vice President; Phil Robilotto, DO, MBA, Assistant Vice President, Office of Technology Transfer; and School of Medicine Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA (pictured below, left to right). Roy J. Film MPT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor received his 10-year manual therapy fellowship renewal from AAOMPT President Jim Rivard, PT, DMT, OCS, FAAOMPT at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) 2015 conference which was held in Louisville, Kentucky on October 21st, (pictured below) 3

4 Rehabilitation Science Research Seminar Cecilia Najera, PRS PhD student, will present the next Rehabilitation Science Research Seminar. Her presentation is entitled: "The effect of an acute bout of exercise on cognitive function in stroke" Please join us on Friday, November 6th from 9:00am-10:00am in Room 511 of the Allied Health Bldg (PTRS, 100 Penn Street). PTRS Fall Phone-a-thon Volunteers Needed STUDENT AND FACULTY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PHONE-A-THON The Department of Development and Alumni Relations is running our annual student phonathon and we need volunteers! Please consider giving a few hours of your time to help with our fund raising efforts to improve PTRS' learning environments of current and future students, expand our academic programs, and increase student scholarships. Dinner and free t-shirts will be provided for all volunteers. Plus, there will be FUN prizes for top callers! We need to fill our phones: callers are needed per night -for a successful campaign. Sign up here! Special note to students: If we meet our goal of $5,000, there will be an opportunity for two students to win a $500 scholarship, all in thanks to a very generous alum! Film MPT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor was in Louisville, Kentucky on October 21st, 2015 helping to run the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) 2015 conference. Due to the high-caliber but small size of the conference, it is known for having an intimate atmosphere, allowing attendees unusual access to international speakers at the top of the field in OMPT. PTRS students, Andrew Hammond and Brendan Glackin were in attendance and had a very positive experience: "AAOMPT 2015 was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms by fellow attendees and keynote speakers alike. I left feeling invigorated, motivated, and with a deeper level of insight than I came with." 7 Class of 2016 Fund Raiser The PTRS Class of 2016 has teamed up with Popcorn Palace ( to raise money to fund their graduation banquet. They have created a customized online fundraising page for easy ordering. The class will receive 50% of the proceeds and will run from November til the end of February. 8 Click HERE to learn more Call for Submissions T The 9th World Congress for NeuroRehabilitation, WCNR 2016, will be held in Philadelphia on May Advances in basic neurosciences and in clinical practice are changing the lives of many patients and helping them to re-integrate in our society. "From Science to Society", the theme that has been chosen for this Congress, will cover both inspiring innovations in neurorehabilitation and their societal impacts. Abstract submission deadline is November 9, The Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neural Control of Movement (NCM) will take place at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa. Nestled between the scenic mountains and turquoise Caribbean waters of Jamaica, the all-inclusive Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa truly inhabits an exclusive ocean-front location on the edge of Montego Bay. The annual meeting continues to offer a variety of Team (Panel, Perspective, Workshop, and Tutorial) and Individual (Oral and Poster) session formats. All sessions are designed to 8

Deadlines can be accessed at NCM 2016 The Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM) Annual Meeting is a cutting edge, must-see and be-seen event for professionals who want to keep abreast of industry changes, new technologies and fresh ideas. The meeting boasts a combination of exciting scientific programs and social events, all tailored to the city the meeting is being held. The 2016 submission dates are as follows: October 1 - November 18, 2015 (Call for Educational and Scientific Programs) and October 29, January 7, 2016 abstract submissions.
