Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 23, 2019 for our 4 th annual Auction Gala event. New this year: Live music entertainment Split the Pot Tickets (currently at $800)-$1, $10, or $20 bundles. The lucky winner will be announced the night of the gala (winner need not be present) and win half the pot. You may purchase tickets online at Tickets for the event are now on sale ($50 or $500 for a table of 8). Tickets may be purchased for the following raffles: Summer Camp Raffle ($25 per ticket) After Care Raffle ($25 per ticket) Tuition Raffle ($100 per ticket) The Catholic School s Office needs our help with donations to benefit Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge. During Catholic Schools Week students of St. John Primary and St. Theresa Middle are asked to donate hygiene items, such as: shampoo, soap, deodorant, shaving cream, first aid supplies, and/or gift cards (no toothpaste or toothbrushes). Please send donations to school no later than: Tuesday, January 29 th. *To help students experience the true meaning of service, we recommend they earn the money to purchase these items by doing small chores around the home. We are always on the look-out for subs. 2 Free Throw Contest The St. Theresa Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a basketball free-throw contest, to provide an athletic outlet for students, and to encourage the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Open to boys / girls ages 9-14 (9-11) (12-14) Each entrant must have an official Knights of Columbus entry form signed by parent/ guardian to participate. Contest held at the St. Theresa Middle Gym from 1pm-3pm, Sunday, January 27, 2019 Winners from each age group continue in additional contests. The Parent/Student Handbook (page 29) states that changes that are made in the middle of a school day must not be ed. That is a policy so that an doesn t get missed, due to things such as technology issues or substitutes in classrooms, who do not have access to a teacher s . Thank you sincerely for your help. New Warrior Wearhouse Website We are now working with Chipola, Inc. for the uniform items sold online sweatshirts, spirit shirts, and PE uniforms. Chipola, Inc is a company that we have done great business with over the past several years and they are now ready with an online service. We are so excited to work with them in this fashion. For now, we have our uniform items already for sale. Soon, we will be adding other spirit gear as well as athletic uniforms. Happy Shopping! warriorwearhouse.itemorder.com Dreams Come True Fundraiser All of us at St. John Primary and St. Theresa Middle have been affected by students and loved ones having cancer and going through treatments, as well as, recovery. We continue to pray for Gracie LeBlanc and Eric Prochaska, two of our current students still going through the process of treatments and/or checkups. We know people in our own lives, such as friends, relatives and coworkers who have suffered through and won the battle with cancer. We would like to give back and have students raise coins, dollars, etc. by doing chores to be donated to Dreams Come True. This program enables many children with cancer to be treated to a special event, day, meeting with someone famous, etc. The group tries to listen to the children s Dreams and find a suitable activity for them to participate in to enjoy themselves. This brings much light into their lives. We have designated Friday, January 18 as Jeans for Dreams Day and we are encouraging students to do chores at home all week, to work for cash. Students with any donation of coins, dollars, etc. on January 18 may have a jeans day with any shirt, sock and shoes (being sure to follow regulations in the Parent/ Student Handbook, pages 32-33). 3 Substance Abuse Poster Contest Students are encouraged to develop an original poster and slogan idea, designed to discourage their peers from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Contest is open to all boys and girls ages 8-14; (8-11) (12-14) and can use either theme: Alcohol Awareness and Abuse or Drug Awareness and Abuse Poster size 11 x17 and each entry must have an official Knights of Columbus entry form signed by parent/ guardian. Poster must be submitted no later than January 31, Diocesan winners receive plaques-and will advance to State contest. First Place State winner in each of 4 categories receive $200 Second Place State RunnerUp in each of 4 categories receive $100 Scholarship Application for 8th grader entering 9th grade in a Catholic High School The national Court will award two $1,000 scholarships to 8th grade students entering 9th grade in the fall of 2019 to a Catholic high School. You must be Catholic (male or female). You do NOT have to have a relative who is a CDA member. 4 4 PARENTING TIPS The following was found in the December 17, 2018 edition of The Advocate. John Rosemond is an American columnist, public speaker, and author on parenting. His weekly parenting column is syndicated in approximately 225 newspapers, and he has authored 15 book on the subject. Rosemond grew up in Charleston, SC, and the suburbs of Chicago. This particular article could be of interest to you and we wanted to share. Please know that any advice works for some people, some of the time. Read with a positive perspective and share with friends, if you like. Q: Our 9-year-old daughter recently announced to us that she doesn t like school, doesn t want to go, and doesn t want to do the work. We ve been unable to get a coherent reason out of her and her thirdgrade teacher tells us that she seems well-adjusted, has friends, and is doing above-average work, which is probably her best. She usually makes this complaint during homework time, when she encounters a difficult problem or doesn t readily understand some explanation I ve given. Lately, however, her complaints have become more frequent, anytime the subject of school comes up. We ve tried to figure out what the problem is, but to no avail. She has no explanation other than I just don t. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? A: I have two suggestions, both of which may seem counterintuitive, but both of which are based on solid research: First, stop talking to your daughter about her attitude toward school and schoolwork. Research in the field of neuro-linguistics predicts that the more you discuss her dislike of school, trying to get to the bottom of it, the more she will complain of disliking school, and the more convinced she will become that she has valid reasons for not liking school. The same is true, by the way, concerning repeated discussions of irrational childhood fears, self-deprecating remarks like I m ugly and No one likes me, and threats of self-harm. At some point, the proper response is We ve talked about that enough. I ve said all I have to say about it. We re not going to talk about it anymore. Talking, however well-intentioned, can transform a random comment (Let s face it, folks, at some point, nearly all children complain of not liking school, being irrationally afraid of something, not liking themselves, being unpopular, and so on) into a drama. The value of talking about a problem has been overblown of late. Talking, like most things that are initially beneficial, carries with it a point of diminishing returns. When that point is reached, talking becomes counter-productive. Having an audience, someone who will listen sympathetically to complaint, is a powerful thing (which is something even some therapists fail to understand). Second, stop helping your daughter with her homework. The latest research which I review in my book Helping Your Child Succeed in School (2014) confirms what I ve been saying for more than thirty years: to wit, parents who help with homework run a strong risk of depressing their children s academic performance. According to the research in question, that s true regardless of a parent s education or the ability level of the child in question. Occasional, time-limited help is fine, but anything more than infrequent, brief homework consultations as in, sitting with a child while homework is being done is likely to stimulate complaints of I can t! Said another way, the more parents help with homework, the more evidence children give that they need help with their homework. It s that audience thing again.
